I saw this movie for the first time a while back. The copy was absolute shit, but the movie still creeped the living shit out of me. And now, after buying the DVD, and watching it again, I an truly say this movie is incredible. The atmosphere just has this eerieness to it, and not knowning just what the hell is going on, adds an incredible amount of suspense. And that ending, WOAH! One of the greatest, scariest endings to any horror movie ever made. Outstanding movie.

Damn, I didn't see the ending to this one coming! Great movie, I saw Ring 2 and Ring 0 in Virgin Megastore last week, I would've bought them but I didn't have much money on me. Still a great movie though. The remake looks good too, but I don't expect it to be as good as the original.

A spot of advice. If you are planning on buying Ring 0 or Ring 2 don't buy from HMV or Virgin. Both these movies will set you back £19.99 from either of these stores (they both seem pathologically opposed to selling subtitled/arthouse movies for less than full whack). Go to www.play.com as both movies are £14.99 there (and a host of other great movies at bargain prices). Check it out. I assure that you will not be disappointed and the effect on your bank balance won't be as painful.

I finally picked this up on DVD last week and watched it and I have to say I was very impressed! This is one of the best horror films I've seen in a while! I'm definitely going to pick up Ring 2 and Ring 0 very soon.

The ending was great, but the bit that really creeped me out was......

**** SPOLIER ALERT ******
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*......when Sadako crawled up to the camera on the video, and then right out through the freakin' TV screen! Wow! Sent chills down my spine!
*

*
*** END OF SPOLIERS ********

As for watching it again, I think I will soon, as the whole film is beautifully put together, and even when you know the ending of a film, it's sometimes great just to relive the journey! :)

Every review I've read of the remake has been positive. I'm gung ho!

The movie didn't scare me but some parts were uber creepy.

Ring is now on KaZaa. I think someone just put it on recently since there's only one file. Type in Ringu and it'll be there. I'm trying to download it,but it keeps saying remote. Any explanation?

Also, the remake is on there, but it's split up into two parts. The original ring is one file. Oh yeah,it's subtitled too.

I didn't like the Japanese version of RING (the original). It didn't scare me at all, it bored the hell out of me all the way. It didn't even seem crappy to me. It was just...dull.

Just watched Ring 2 - it's not quite as good as Ring, but still a decent movie. Just need to get hold of Ring 0 now and my trilogy is complete! (Can't wait to see how they've handled the westernisation of it either.)

Bought all 3 on DVD. Haven't watched "0" yet.
RING is definitely on it's way to becoming a classic. I saw the remake a few weeks ago, and while it WAS good, it did not live up to the original, which is WAY creepier.

I just watched it. After hearing all the great reviews, I expected it to be overrated. However, I didn't know it would be THAT overrated. What a terrible HORROR movie. Nothing horrifying about it. Not even anything remotely creepy about it.

That said, it was an alright MYSTERY movie. The storyline is a bit 'ehhh..' but I can get past that. To be honest, I did see the ending coming for the most part. Not the specifics of how, but the end result. Did anyone else think that, when the lady was driving her car to the grandfathers house at the end, she was wayyy too happy looking?

*Sort of spoiler?*
They should've called this movie CHAIN-LETTER, because movie goes to huge lengths to describe the reason for them. Sort of.
*end*

Ring as horror: 1/10
Ring as mystery: 6/10

RING 2 is good despite a weak story. RING 0: BIRTHDAY isn't as scary as the other two since Hideo Nakata didn't direct it, but it's interesting since you see the origins of Sadako.

Uh... that copy of The Ringu is a hefty file,, about 850MB and in mp2 format. Plus the last ten minutes of the tape are only the main menu, but the recorder forgot to turn off the digital VCR in time, and he doesn't have a video editing program quite yet! (That's what the description says).

You can find it for pretty cheap on VHS, just go to ebay or something. It's not really that hard to find, and then you can OWN a copy of it! :D

Actually the file is about 713MB and the quality is pitch perfect, the menu doesn't show up at all and it only screws up for 5 seconds at the beginning.

And my description of the file is about not seeing some shallow retread Americanized.

I've only seen the original Ring, which I thought was a brilliant movie - that Sadako is one creepy-looking little bitch!

Ring 0 is cool enough but Ring is certainly better...:)

Too true Mr Klown...Sadako is a creepy lil' fucker.

My major gripe about Ring, there just could have been MORE dialogue...it was a bit of a choppy affair, and I couldn't help but feel that the boyfriends "gift" was a little too convenient...but still, an extremely haunting flick all the same.

The original was petty good except for one part that pissed the fuck outta me. Ok,why the hell did they have to take the water out bucket by bucket for like 6 hours. And when it shows it six hours later when they finish, they couldn't have taken out more than one, maby two feet of water. Doesn't make sense. Stupid stupid part

Peace,
Matt

Here's the review from my site. I don't think it's quite as good as the remake but it's fantastic none-the-less.

Ringu- 10/10

Genre: Horror/Asian

Year: 1998

Rating: US Unrated/Can 14A for Disturbing Images and some Gore.

Director: Hideo Nakata

Cast:

Nanako Matsushima

Miki Nakatani

Hiroyuki Sanada

Plot:

Same as the first. A videotape is floating around that contains bizarre clues to an incident that occurred over 40 years ago. After watching it, Asakawa and Ryuji try and find out what everything means before their seven days have passed. After which, you die without any signs of cause.

My Thoughts:

The Ring (2002) is a brilliant remake that improves on the original. When I say that though, I don’t mean it in offence to this masterwork.

It’s really hard to compare the two even though they both are extraordinary films made with the same plot. The Hollywood version has a better plot, better direction and is more shocking.

Ringu is scarier though, that’s for sure. The Ring (2002) has mostly shock scares that will knock you off your feet but Ringu has that "there’s something behind you" type of scariness that truly sinks into the brain.

But as I said, it’s hard to compare the two, both are very unique and different films, despite having similar sequences in each. It’s like comparing an apple to an orange, they are both fruits but are completely different from one another.

The remake tied in themes of family and raising children while this one stuck to the main plot and never went anywhere else. I guess that’s why it felt scarier because even though I’ve seen the remake, I never knew what to expect from this movie.

If I have one complaint, it’s how easily things came to Ryuji. He knew everything and although there is an explanation for it, I still felt cheated out of the mystery sometimes. In the remake, this does not occur.

My advice is to buy both movies and watch them on separate nights. Ringu is brilliant but The Ring (2002) is hands down the better of the two.

Acting- 9/10

My only complaint was that sometimes the two leads looked like they were going to burst into laughter in some terrifying scenes.

Directing- 10/10

Very different style than Gore Verbinski. This was a much more dark film and had a unique style to the flashbacks.

Gore- 4/10

We see skin peeled back from a corpses face to reveal a skull with oozing goo that used to be eyes. We also see ripped off nails and a hand missing nails.

Nudity- 0/10

Matt

Has anyone had a chance to read the original novel that the first film is based on....wow - i just finished reading it the other day and I miss say that it is one weird messed up book - very different from the films and Sadako's little secret at the end made me kind of cringe.

I don't care much for the region 1 release... Tartan version is pretty good, but I believe there is a Korean version out there that is better. I remember seeing the Korean version and thinking it looked great.

The remake is actually a better film in many ways. It doesn't sport the Hollywood-isms that you would expect. It's a very different film from Ringu, they stand apart very well. Ringu scared the shit out of me, The Ring took that feeling to a different level and psychologically scared the shit out me. Oh, who am I kidding, it terrified me!

Loved RINGU(9/10) & RING 0(8/10)- found the predictable hollywood remake boring (6/10) - telegraphing every scare ahead of time and removoing all sense of eerieness with bright colours and distracting camera work. The script to was very weak with a by the #'s reteeling without any of the originals ambiguity. Everything is spelled out and why the fuck do US films always take out the most confrontational ideas from source materials.

Ringu: 9/10
The Ring: 5/10

The Ring hasn't got that much Hollywood-isms, but it has too much to be called a worthy remake.
Had some scares, but most of the time, I was just looking at it without ever moving, where Ringu had an atmosphere so scary that I felt pleasantly unpleasant through the entire movie.

Btw, Ringu 2 absolutely rules too, Ringu 0 wasn't that great in my opinion.
I haven't seen Rasen yet... (the first Ringu sequel, that the fans found so bad, it was banned from the series and Ringu 2 was made)

I have seen The Ring a few months ago and loved it (8/10). Today I'll recieve my copy of Ringu and for sure I'm gonna watch it tonight.

I just wonder if seeing the remake will ruin my watching to the original. Though many of my friends saw it after seeing the remake and still appreciated it a lot.

Ringu's ending is similar in principle to the one used in the American remake. It's pretty much the same ending. It's just the Japanese one is different in storyline and some plot points. Of course the original book is even more different.
