View Full Version : Movies you love, but the world HATES

Ok, I'm pretty sure even the most distinguished film coinsures enjoyed a couple lemons. Or at least so called lemons. Here are mine:

The beach: OK this movie is fun, enjoyable, original, visually orgasmic, and just pretty damn cool. But alas, everyone thinks it sucks. Kinda does but it's not the postman ffs.

Eyes Wide Shut: Best lighting and scene dressing EVER. kinda frothy plot line, but it's still coo. However no one sees Kubrick's flawless wielding of the craft.

American Werewolf in Paris: This movie does infact suck on the level of corny plot n dialogue. However I still dig it. Cool wolf scenes and i just don't see the horrendously bad CGI everyone else seems to. It's dumb and not that great. But is it really that bad?

Mission Impossible 2: Now this was dismissed because it was "corny" and "unbelievable". Everyone just didn't seem to like it that much. Yet I do not see why. xXx is one of the stupidest corniest action flicks ever with action that blows MI2's cock. Yet no one seemed to dislike xXx. MI2 isn't that great of a movie overall. But it's still very exciting, well shot, well told, and just enjoyable. Infact I would say the movie kicks ass. I love it.

How about u?

THE WIZARD. So it's a corny, 90-minute commercial for Nintendo and Universal Studios, but I love to pieces, dammit!

I liked Armageddon just like JoBlo.

I know not everyone hated it, but enough people did.

It was just a fun movie to watch.

It's pretty stupid but where else can you find fred savage and a power glove. it's a sure winner.

"I love the power glove... it's so bad."

Cable Guy - My favorite Jim Carey comedy... by far!

House on Haunted Hill - the general public bashed this, but I loved it. Remember the summer it came out...99.... same summer as Shitmata, and The Haunted...ewww!! I saw both those pieces of crap at the show, and passed on HoHH... stupid me.

Believe me, I have a shitload. But I'd rather spare the amount of defense I'd have to put up and the probability that I'd get flamed off the boards. I'll just name one:

Collateral Damage : In my opinion, Arnold's best solid action flick since Eraser, and another very exciting, well paced action movie that Andrew Davis can flaunt on his resume. 8/10

I must be the only person in existance who LOVES Cocktail

There's something so cool about the Cruiser throwing bottles about and getting laid for the duration of this flick. No sarcasm there, I fucking love this film!

There have been quite a few recent movies that audiences bashed, yet I seemed to enjoy to the last drop:

Ghosts of Mars: John Carpenter released this "zombies on another planet" flick last year and noone on the planet seemed to acknowledge it. Come on now, it kicked ass. It was one hell of a thrill ride as a group of survivors try to escape alive from zombified villagers that look like they ran themselves through a mosh pit and piercing parlor at the same time. A good rent!

Hannibal: Ok, so Ridley Scott could have toned it down a little when trying to shock and Julianne Moore was not nearly as cool as Foster in this role, but Anthony Hopkins was still mysterious and creepy as usual, and I enjoyed this flick very much.

The Majestic: So what if it was corny and generic? It was supposed to be a squeaky clean, Capraesque, and patriotic flick. I thought it was a great film that was highly underrated and did not deserve to get crushed in the box office by "How High". Gag me.

I love PEARL HARBOR and DEEP IMPACT. They are both on my top ten of all time, and it's not just that they have great cgi or good action sequences. I don't consider them guilty pleasures. Both of these films had great characters that I really connected with and i think both of these films are very well made and I don't know why everybody hates them. I think w/ PH, people just wouldn't accept the idea that Michael Bay made a good film that wasn't just a stupid action film. I'm not even a Bay fan or anything, but I think in this case he did a really good job.

Mallrats and Dogma are widely disliked (except among enlightened folks who know what a genius Kevin is), and I liked them both.

I generally despise most Jim Carrey movies. Even "serious" fare of his, like Man on the Moon and The Truman Show bore the piss out of me. His lowbrow comedies? Don't even fucking get me started. But, imagine my colossal surprise at how much I laughed at Me, Myself and Irene.

One of my friends, who I tend to trust, told me to watch it to see his three sons. Every moment those guys were on screen was classic, but a lot of Carey's stuff was great as well. It reminded me of why I used to like him in the In Living Colour days.

well i can`t say that i "loved" it but i did like tomb raider! i can`t be the ONLY one on the planet that liked it? i guess you would have to be into astronomy and ancient civilizations to like it?

the one thing i didn`t like about it was how masculine angelina jolie`s character acts.. i think they over did it in this regards.. she`s just to manly! but other than that i liked the movie!

i also liked the new time machine movie and the cable guy!

Let's see, as memory serves, I've got tons of these:

THE PHANTOM MENACE
THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
WILLOW
FINAL FANTASY
MALLRATS
MARS ATTACKS
TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE (Although a lot of Schmoes have confessed to loving this one too)
DOGMA (But only pissy right wing types hate this one, so I don't think it really counts)
THE CABLE GUY

A few of mine have already been mentioned. Such as...Armageddon, Mars Attacks, Dogma, etc. A couple others are...3 O'clock High, Better Off Dead, Me, Myself & Irene and The Majestic. Hell, I guess most of mine have been mentioned. I've got more I'm sure.

It's much more often that I don't really like a film that most people do.

Here are some movies that critics shit on for good reason and all though they are not Award material they still were entertaining.

1) Queen of the damned(Had it's flawes and was predictable but still worth seeing)
2) Jaws 2 (Not close to the first but still a good movie, some of the shark closeups are pretty creepy)
3)Attack of the clones(Can be boring, I hate the guy who plays anakin, but the battles are impressive.)
4)Scarface( Drags on alot but the end fight scene is so fucking cool)

Dogma isn't as liked as it should've been but despite what the critics say, everyone I have met said Mallrats was the best Kevin Smith movie. Everyone said that movie was good. I liked them both but Dogma would've been a lot better had Smith kept in the deleted scenes.

The ones I loved yet everyone else hated:

Oscar

Waking Life

Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (one of the few sequels better than the first, but I thought the first sucked)

The Big Hit B+ (I just think this movie is so cool and funny.)
The Cable Guy B+ (Jim Carrey's just as funny here as in any of his other movies.)
Blue Crush B+ (Kate Bosworth is great. I really liked the dialogue too, actually.)
The Beach B+ (Leo is just so cool to me, and the movie very stylish and cool.)
Ravenous B+ (Something about this movie I really like. Maybe it's a Guy Pearce thing.)
The Time Machine ('02) B- (It wasn't THAT bad. The ending was just too quick.)

To add to my previous list...

The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle B (I laughed so much at the cartoons. The life action guys still sucked though.)
Almost Heroes B+ (This is the second funniest Farley movie, under Tommy Boy.)
An American Werewolf in Paris B- (I laughed hard, and it made me jump.)
Antitrust B (At least they portray computers as how they actually sound in real life.)
The Cell B+ (The visuals were amazing, and the story was exciting.)
The Curse of the Jade Scorpion B+ (I laughed so hard, and Charlize helped ;) .)
Detroit Rock City B- (This movie cracks me up, despite the horribly corny camerawork.)
Dragnet ('87) B+ (I love this movie. Not sure what's "wrong" with it.)
Dune ('84) B (I never read the book, so what do I care if it doesn't follow it. It's a fun movie.)
The Fifth Element B+ (Chris Tucker is excellent in this, and this movie really just cracks me up and excites me.)
For Love of the Game B+ (I thought Kevin Costner and Kelly Preston were excellent.)
Hollow Man B (The SFX were great, and Kevin Bacon rules. I'm also a sucker for Shue.)
In Dreams B (Dreary, but I thought it was very well made.)
Josie and the Pussycats B (I laughed a lot during this movie. Don't know why.)
Lake Placid B (This movie has weak horror elements, but great sarcasm.)
She's All That B (Charming.)
Slackers C+ (It wasn't TOO bad. Schwartzman was hilariously perverted.)
Starship Troopers B+ (Just plain, crappy fun.)
The Watcher B- (Keanu was decent. NOT horrible.)

ninja555, all your movies I love, with the possible exception of The Beach (thought it was ok, but I didn't love it).

Earthquake was really cheesy and really fun. The quintessential '70s disaster flick.

Ghosts of Mars
basically The Thing(s) meets Escape from LA. I loved it too.

Waking Life
I thought this was one of the best movies of the year.

13 Ghosts
I liked it better the second time. I still prefer the original.

House on Haunted Hill
Way better than The Haunting (a big let-down especially considering how great the original Haunting was), and better than its original. Thought it was great.

Josie and the Pussycats was fun.
I think a lot of people missed the joke about the product placements. I actually thought it was a good satire.

Starship Troopers
The most expensive B-movie ever. Definitely underrated. (I loved it, although I though Verhoven missed the boat a bit on the satire aspect of it.)

A lot of other movies that were mentioned I loved, or at least enjoyed: The Fifth Element, The Cell, Dogma, For Love of the Game, Mars Attacks! and a bunch of others.

Now for some of my own choices.

Godzilla. The 1998 version.
I seem to be the only person in the world who likes the movie. It's so shlocky, I don't know why more people don't like it.

Boys and Girls, and Loser. (Don't ask.)

Million Dollar Hotel
Any Wim Wenders movie is, to me, a good Wim Wenders movie.

Snow Falling on Cedars
Such a beautiful movie to watch.

I can't think of any more for now.

kevin smith is a genius.

Pitch Black-I've watched this movie over 100 times for some reason. Now I'm hooked on Diesel movies.

Resident Evil-Saw it once and couldn't believe anybody who liked women would blast it. Milla Jovovich:D

Predator 2-Not as good as the first but incredible in it's own right.

Ghosts of Mars-Ice Cube, the babe from Species, plus lots of guns=good.

Starship Troopers-Takes all the great elements of a B-movie and adds CGI effects.

Waterworld-Not sure why you wouldn't like it. It's Mad Max in water.

Blade-Not as good as the sequel, but then again I'm into vampires.

Godzilla 1998-I think of it as a new series not as a part of the GODZILLA juggernaut.

Death Becomes Her - A really juicy satire on Hollywood's obssession with youth and beauty. A lot of people don't seem to like it.

Dude, Where's My Car? - A film so stupid, so unpretentious and so silly, it's bound to be a cult classic someday. I'll be president of that cult.

Showgirls - This flick is already a cult classic. It really is a great trashy melodramatic satire. Though Elizabeth Berkeley won't be winning Oscars anytime soon and the rape scene is out of place, the film has been unfairly trashed by most critics.
