I keep seeing the term heavy metal/hard rock pop up on these boards, but the one band I never see associated with this term is BLACK SABBATH.
Has fucking MTV, and The Osborns made you people forget that Ozzy Osborn was once in a seminal hard rock band? I even heard one person say that KISS was the first metal act.
Fuck, fuck, fuckity, fuck, fuck!
As far as this headbanger is concerned, Black Sabbath brought hard rock to the world. Fuck Zeppelin. The only music those boys fostered was hair rock.
Sabbath is where it's at.
(with notable nods to MC5)
that's all.
thank you

Though not amoung my favorites, I still find BLACK SABBATH to kick ass and I do believe they were the original metal band, and not KISS or Motley Crue. PLus they do deserve a spot in the rock n roll hall of fame. Long live SABBATH.

I may have been misinterpreted. I meant to say KISS was the first American metal act. Sorry for the mix-up. I don't know how Motley Crue got mentioned in there, they were ten years after KISS. I love Black Sabbath, no argument from me.

Very observant Jason! Yep, that's from Goddamn Electric by Pantera. Since it sort of sums them up, I wasn't going to go for anything more original :)

i'd say they are both great. like comparing pulp fiction and goodfellas. (assuming everyone feels those movies are great...)

Sabbath rules, but Alice Cooper is a true pioneer of metal, he was there before Ozzy and he's still kickin ass

what makes you say that? not that i'm arguing over who invented metal (this thread was started on the intentions of ranting about the underappreciation Sabbath gets).
Black Sabbath's debut was a year before Coopers.
Zeppelins was a year before Sabbath, but I still hold that Zepellin isn't metal. (later albums, maybe)
anyone ever hear Mc5 - really I'd say these guys are the true metal pioneers

Black Sabbath was awesome back in the day. They also survived the unthinkable...changing of lead singers. They were great with Ozzy, and actually continued to be great behind Ronnie James Dio. Paranoid and Heaven and Hell were two of the greatest albums of all time.
