This for me was a pretty frickin' tough question. Sorry that there's not room for more guys, but feel free to put your choices here. I can't say I'm totally certain of my choice, but I'm going with Bridge On the River Kwai.

The 50's had some amazing films, and it was really close between Sunset Boulevard and Bridge on the River Kwai, but I give the edge to Sunset Blvd.

I haven't seen some of those movies but I'll be seeing 'em soon, though. I voted OTHER- Rear Window

The 400 Blows is the best of the 50s, but out of the ones listed I would say either On the Waterfront or Vertigo.

I consider Vertigo to be the best film i've ever seen, so obviously it would also be in my opinion the best film of the 50's. I haven't yet had the chance to see all of those films, though.

Went with my favorite movie "THE AFRICAN QUEEN!"

I went with the only movie on the list I've seen... Bridge on the River Kwai.

Oh, FUCK!!! I should have voted for "other", since Stalag 17 is my 8th favorite film of all time. Damn me to hell.

(I even thought "Kwai" was overrated. It put me to sleep, actually.)

Sunset Boulevard beats Vertigo by a hair for me. I also thought that The Bridge on the River Kwai was slightly overrated.

I voted for other, The Searchers. The only film on the list that I've seen in the excellent 'Vertigo'

Well, it looks like there's not a clear consensus here, which doesn't really surprise me....a decade with a lot of tough choices.

you need to see more forign films Jasonite. I haven't seen Seven Samurai either but I have seen the Hidden Fortress. Akira Kurosawa's films are recognised by many who have experience with forign films to be be some of the best films ever. The Hidden Fortress proves that.

What makes you think I haven't seen quite a few foreign films?

Went with Bridge on the River Kwai on that list (don't like choosing "other").
I'm suprised to see that Lawrence of Arabia wasn't on that list. That's a classic of classics.

Fav movie of the fifties (overall) though: Seven Samurai (as you can see
<--)

My bad, Arabia was made in the early sixties.

I have to admit I'm surprised High Noon--perhaps the very standard of the genre--and On the Waterfront...one of Brando's definitive performances....weren't given a single vote. Was I the only one who saw these movies?

I'm going with a film that wasn't on your list. Rashomon

I've seen High Noon, but On The Waterfront is still eluding me.

Some Like it Hot! I have never laughed so hard before. Every time I see Marilyn sizzle on screen!

A LOT of great choices, but the best and my favorite is High Noon starring my man, Gary Cooper. It shows how brilliant use of editing can produce a wonderful film. The first film in real time!

Also is an allegory of the 50's Hollywood witchhunt of suspected Communists. One man who once protected his town has been forsaken and must stand alone.

I voted for Some Like it Hot. One of the best comedies ever made, and one of the best cast of three ever assembled.

The fact that not a single foreign film is on your poll list. I think the 50's and 60's great movies were predominately foreign, but even if you don't, not even one foreign flick on the list? There are also no foreign films of the 1960's poll of yours. That gives the impression you haven't seen many foreign films or that, for some reason, you don't like foreign movies.

Yeah, I've seen quite a few foreign films, but I didn't put them up for 2 reasons....1, a lot of people on this board haven't seen many movies from the 50's and 60's, and 2, of the ones they have seen, the odds that they were a foreign film are even slimmer. Even given this I'd have put at least two films up there, but I ran out of room. Some people (and I use that term generously) may have seen Seven Samurai, for example, but how many have seen Rashomon, Hidden Fortress,or Throne of Blood? Three, maybe four on this whole board? It's the same thing with movies like LaStrada, or Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, the 400 Blows, Breathless, olivier's Richard III, ad infinitum. There's room for 10 foreign films alone for this decade. So what do I do? Only list foreign films? Put one token one up to represent all foreign films? No, I decided to go with the odds on this one, that of the relatively few movies from the 50's that most people have seen, that they'd be American films. Was I wrong in doing so? *shrug* Maybe so...at least my list is getting votes, and how many people have written in their favorites as a foreign film. One, maybe two? Who knows, maybe the next time I do something like this I will try putting up more foreign films, but don't make the mistake of thinking that because I don't put them up I haven't seen them, or don't respect them, son, because you'd be wrong.

I voted other. Rear Window (10/10) is absolutely the best movie of the 1950s.
