View Full Version : Harry Potter 2: Repeating all the earlier stuff again?

I haven't read any of the HP books, but I liked the first film (6/10 - pretty good). The film felt like two hours of set-up and 30 minutes of actual story to me, but it seemed like an interesting setup and environment to start a franchise.
However, I have understood that the 2nd film will again take place almost entirely in the same castle and will tell about Harry's 2nd year at the school. So the question I have is that does the 2nd story in the series re-cycle lot's of the locations and happenings of the first film?
This does make it seem less appealing, since an important appeal of fantasy films comes from seeing something you haven't seen before. Extraordinary locations and creatures, unusual events.
I have understood that the series really start to expand the whole world of HP only in the 3rd and 4th chapters. Is this true? What do the readers of HP think of this?
Like yourself, I have never read any of the books, and was wondering exactly the same thing about the progression of the story.
I've heard that the books really do get dark and rather violent as they progress, and this sounds really interesting*, but Chamber Of Secrets sounds, yet again, like it's setting the stage.
*I don't mean that it's interesting just because of the darker, more violent tone, rather it is interesting to see how this tone comes about and how, what is essentially a kids tale, can become violent.
Please, any HP experts, explain......

Oh no. I have read all of the books multiple times and yes, the sequel will take place at Hogwarts, but it does not repeat. Sure it has Harry, Ron, Hermione, Hagrid, Dumbledore, Snape, etc, but it has many new characters(Ginny Weasley, Colin Creevey, Moaning Myrtle), new locations(the chamber of secrets, Ron's home, Knockturn Alley), and a completely different plot. The plot of terrible things happening at Hogwarts run thorugh the entire plot. There is no set-up really, it jumps straight into the action. It has many new and original plot lines and introduces new magical ideas. It does not repeat the same old stuff, it has the characters learning and experiencing new stuff.

Harry Potter 2 is my least favorite of the books and it looks as though it will be my least favorite of the movies as well. It is pretty different from the first book, but similar in many ways. Here are some:
-It does take place in Hogwarts
-It involves Harry, Ron and Hermione trying to solve a deep mystery about the school which leads them into great danger
-Naturally, the people they suspect first are the ones that are mean to them--Snape, and Draco
-There is a twist at the end that you most likely won't guess but which some (including me for Chamber) won't like very much
-It opens with the Dursleys being mean to Harry before school starts
-It is slightly dark but not much more than Sorcerer's Stone (not to me at least) (not as dark as the following two books)
There are more things, but I won't go into them. This is the most serial of the four and I will definitely see it, as should any fans of the book or first movie, but if you miss it, you won't be missing a whole lot. The Sorcerer's Stone was very good because it introduced the principle characters and had Harry getting used to wizard school, The Prizoner of Azkaban had a huge surprise that should not be missed for the series, and The Goblet of Fire had some very important plot points as well, but The Chamber of Secrets is really not a key book to the series.
So to answer the original question, this movie in my opinion is very different from the first one, but similar in many ways and yes, in a way, it does set the stage for the following books.

Actually, Tuukk', I read the books, and I think CoS will be more or less the same atmosphere and so on as the first movie. Prisoner of Azkaban and The Goblet Of Fire are different and more original, but the two first books (Sorcerer's Stone and CoS) are very much alike.
That said, I think CoS will be more enjoyable than the first movie, because there won't be what you rightfully called "two hours of set-up". So I think there'll be more action, making it a better movie.
I don't agree that it's much the same. All of the four books are excellent in my taste and each one is different from the other, despite the fact that most of the happenings are in Hogwarts.
In CoS we have many original things. The Chamber Of Secrets alone is worth it.
Still, PoA will be the best. I guess..

Although all four books are excellent, I will say that CoS is my least favorite. But, at the same time, I believe it will be the best film adaption, as, quite simply, it is the easiest to adapt, and has the most "movie-like" storyline. Trust me, this one will be good.
