Dudes, I went to my local Wal-Mart and couldnt find Star Wars ANH, ESB, ROTJ on DVD. Obviously I'm missing something. What, does Lucas not want to have a DVD set until all six movies are completed? Or is he just taking extra time so he can make the DVD's extra special? I wouldnt mind a bare bones DVD of the movies right now. Anything coming out soon other than ATOC?

Dude, you actually thought there were DVDs of them? If you want bare-bones versions, you can go ahead and buy a fan-made DVD off Ebay. If you want the official DVD with the extras, additional footage, probably a commentary (although no extras except the new footage has been stated officially--I only know this because I heard he was shooting it with the actors while filming the next Star Wars movie), well then you'll have to wait until all three prequels are completed AND released on DVD--that's right, we're talking 2005-2006. We've got a long wait ahead of us.

xirtam's right. We've got to wait for them. The earliest we'll see them is after Episode 3. There are video cds avaliable on the net but that's about it. When they do come out one things for sure, they'll come out in style.

Oh man, that flat out sucks. Well, at least I have my TPM DVD and will get the AOTC when it comes out. I just thought by now Lucas would have had a mastered versions of IV-VI on DVD.
Thanks for the info.

Without a doubt the first trilogy is the most anticipated set of dvd's ever, likely the Indiana Jones trilogy isn't too far behind, if not next.
My best guess is that they will be released a couple months after Episode III comes to video... This will give people enough time to own the second trilogy and also enough time for them to be at their peek of longing for the first trilogy. I think it is the perfect time for them be released...

Lucas has stated that he will never release the orignal trilogy - in it's original format - because, this is not Lucas's view of what he wanted the trilogy to be. Lucas's view of what the trilogy has all the extra bonus additions in the movie, extra scenes, etc.

Okay, so I did some searching on the internet and found two stores that sell the Star Wars trilogy in DVD format. They are selling the entire trilogy for 32.99. These stores look legit but does anyone know if these DVD's are even worth it as far as quality is concerned? Are these even legal? Does anyone here own these and could give me some info on them?
Found them at two sites and many on Ebay as suggested. Here are the stores if you want to check them out and see what I'm talking about.

Well I am not going to buy any of them on DVD or VHS until George releases the Super Duper Special Edition Deluxe Set with Platinum Disks in one big DVD package...
I mean how many versions are there on VHS of the old trilogy?
Here's how I see him working...He releases the DVD of the new ones...Episode II for example...With lots of Special Features...Each one of them will be released...Then He will put up the Special Edition Trilogy Set...Then after everybody has that he will release the old trilogy on DVD...Then after everybody has those... He will unveil the Super Edition Package deal with all Six Movies....Then I will laugh at all of the people who bought the other versions...

I cannot wait until Lucas releases the original trilogy on DVD. I just hope the original versions on there, not just the special editions. I am a member of SAGSF/Society Against Greedo Shoots First. Jst Kidding. :)

I hope both versions are there as well DH.
I've been attending HSOJTJITF (Han stepping on Jabba's tail just isn't that funny) meetings for about 5 years now, and I don't think I'll ever fully recover.

I decided to purchase the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD and got it yesterday. It was from some company in Malaysia who charged me $29 for it plus $5 shipping. The DVD's look authentic and are well done so I'm not really sure if these are bootlegs or are actually by Lucas. It is the special edition Star Wars with all the new CGI but does not have much additional stuff on it.
The quality of the picture is good, not great, but it sure beats having to watch it on VHS. The sound was very good too. I'm watching it on my 53" Widescreen TV so the quality will probably be much better on smaller TV's. The back of the DVD says its Anamorphic but it wasnt, though I'm not complaining. I would recommend the trilogy in this DVD format for anybody who doesnt want to wait till 2005-2006.
I dont remember what store I got this from, but if anybody is interested I'll find the link for you. You could probably get the same ones off Ebay too.

Who knows if it's just yet more of the many Star Wars rumors out there, but I've heard that only the Special Editions will be available on DVD. This is because George Lucas considers them the final, finished versions of the films. If you ask me, this is a terrible terrible thing. The originals are much better than the special editions, and when I sit down to watch them I choose the originals. Lucas should do what Spielberg did with his E.T. DVDs, and include both versions.

If you want the originals in digital quality just do what I did... Get the Laserdiscs. :D

They are most definetly bootlegs. They are mastered from the special edition laser discs. Do they have permenant subtitles? Some editions do, others don't
I bought the original Star Wars on LD because I didn't want the special edition. IMO, it was the most ruined in the SE. ROTJ had that stupid beak in the sarlac, and not much else. Empire Strikes back... DIdn't really notice anything bad there.

Yup Lucas has said that you will never see the original versions on DVD as they are the working copies and he does not want people viewing them, they are unfinished according to him.
So good luck if you have gotten rid of your old VHS versions, or if you cannot find the old laser discs.
The overseas versions of the Special Edition are available, and I believe they where authorized by Lucas, just like the Japanese Laser Disc's where, he often releases stuff overseas that we do not get.

The Hong Kong DVDs I'm pretty sure are not authorized (though the VCDs are) - though the Japanese LDs most definetly are. The Phantom Menace got released on LD in Japan (LD was huge in Japan, as generally speaking they have a higher percentage of cinephiles then America. True with China as well to some extent.) like a year and a half before the DVD got here, a number of Americans got it even though it cost over $100.

That's apparently the newest release. Unfortunately not the original edition though, apparently.
You can also check out the official VCD releases - those are definetly the original. VCDs are not in the same ballpark of quality as LD or DVD, unfortunately. I have not seen an SVCD release either.
