It's one of the hardest films to synopsise that I've ever come across. In short, it's a deep look into David Lynch's twisted psyche. At best, it's about a man called Henry Spencer who has a girlfriend called Mary X. He has dinner at her place and meets her folks, nice people but the scene will put you off ever wanting to so much as look at a Cornish game hen again. She gives birth to a severely disfigured...puppet, who she then abandons with Henry. Erm...he has a facially disfigured little woman living in his radiator singing about "In Heaven, Everything Is Fine". In conclusion...yes, it's one hell of a mind-boggling film.
That said, it's a treasured part of my collection and if you can enjoy a film purely for imagery and mood-altering sound, and throw plot & progress out the window, you're in for one weird ride. It's probably the closest you'll ever come to an acid trip while sober. Oddly enough, it made me a life-long Lynch fan. I'd recommend it, if just out of curiosity.
