Okay, I know most of you are familiar with this little horror "gem." And a good many of you have strong opinions about it, one way or the other. This film was just released on DVD on 10/08/02, and I just picked it up today. I watched the unrated version this afternoon, and it occured to me how much I like this film. I saw it in theaters when it was originally released, and I've rented it a time or two. As I watched it today, I began to compile a list of reasons why I adore this film. They are as follows.
******Some SPOILERS included.******
TOP TEN REASONS I LOVE JASON GOES TO HELL.
10. We get to see Jason Voorhees explode and his body parts rain down through the air. Sweet.
9. I like the fact that the creators tried to do something new, even if it doesn't include a hockey masked killer for 85% of the film.
8. Unnecessary nudity within the first four minutes of the film. Mmmmmm, unnecessary female nudity. Yum.
7. Bloody, disgusting heart chomping. Yuck.
6. The fact that most F13 fans despise it. What can I say? I love to go against the grain.
5. The bloody, gratuitous massacre in the diner. Gotta love that elbow to the chin. Grease burns anyone? Aww, yeah.
4. The, obviously, TERMINATOR-influenced scene when "Jason" enters the police station.
3. Creighton Duke's "price" for information, and Stephen's willingness to pay. Can you say "badass"? I thought so.
2. The many references to other horror franchises. Let me see, we had: The book of the dead reference for EVIL DEAD, the crate reference for CREEPSHOW, and most obviously Freddy's hand for the A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET reference. Loved it!!!!!!
1. Hockey mask shaped hamburger patties. Mmmmm, red meat.
I know many people were way turned off by the lack of a "real" Jason in this film, for at least a majority of the movie. I feel your pain, but I was able to look past that. I mean, doesn't it mean more to see Jason, in all his rotting glory, after you've been forced to watch him in other various human forms for over an hour? Well, it worked for me, although I know many of you despised this movie. All I can say it, sorry you guys didn't like it. I respect your opinions immensely, so I hope you all will do the same for mine.
Rejected reasons for the top-10 list:
- The wonderful campsite murders. Graphic violence, and plenty of nudity. Yeah baby, yeah.
- The melting cop. Beautiful. Just beautiful. Oh yeah, and sickenening.
- The creator of the first, returns to bring you the last, or what was intended to be the last. Oh well.
Well, I hope I have inspired at least one or two of you to go out and check this movie out. If you haven't seen it in a while, give it another chance. Just make sure it is the UNRATED version. Just try to like it for what it is, a silly little, gory movie.
Just my .02.
Anyone else have any reasons I could add to my list? Eh? C'mon, I know you do.

Yes! A fellow advocate of Jason Goes to Hell! This is a fast-paced, gratuitous slasher, so why is it universally panned??????? Isn't this what most genre fans dig? Personally, I could easily overlook the goofy plotline and the fact that it's disconnected from the rest of the series. Those are minor qualms that don't get in the way of my enjoyment of this flick. The melting cop kicks ass!

*SPOILERS*
1. Story is an uninspired rehash of The Hidden.
2. Horrible sound mix muffles dialogue and score.
3. That damn stupid ending that wasn't explored in Jason X.
4. Acting is even worse than usual.
5. Eating that heart is just plan gross.
6. Biggest "star" was the secretary from Silver Spoons, who doesn't even show any nip.
7. New relative for Jason to kill is hoary horror cliche.
8. Explain Jason X if he was blown to bits.
9. Where's the "ch, ch, ah, ah" we all know and love?
10. Can't for the life of me recall one death besides stupid waitress cow's. Dull, dull, dull.
11. Cheesy snake on video cover has nothing to do with movie.
12. Who cares about adults? I thought this series was all about hacking up young sluts.
13. Is it even Crystal Lake? What happened to "Forest Green"? Where are they now, Connecticut? That's what the license plates show. I thought this was supposed to be New Jersey.
No, really, explain number 8. I haven't yet seen Jason X, and would really like to know. Are they pretending Jason Goes to Hell doesn't exist, like the Halloween series did with Parts 4-6?

I'm fairly certain that Freddy vs. Jason will pick up where Jason Goes to Hell left off. Thus, Jason X is set in the future, distancing itself from the events in Freddy vs. Jason so as to avoid overlapping storylines. Read Arrow's interview with Todd Farmer (screenwriter, Jason X).

I`m with FeverDog420, I just despised this movie. One reason FeverDog forgot to mention: the awful, AWFUL music score by Harry Manfredini (what happened Harry?).

the worst thing about this film was the ending where jason spends 10 minutes throwing the guy about when a proper jason would have broke the guys neck in a heartbeat.

I liked this. It was entertaining but I was dropped on my head as a child, many times. also. the hidden is a great movie also.

I would have liked Creighton Duke's character more had he been given an actual showdown with Jason; the real Jason mind you. Instead, all his ''badassedness'' meant nothing when he went toe to toe with the decadent behemoth. This is exacerbated by the fact that the nerdy guy fought Jason for a few minutes before being finished by the ''Final girl''.
Not insulting your opinion at all (I though Duke was cool too), just stating mine. A real showdown between Duke and Jason would have rocked imo.

These arn't really the movies faults, the sound mix isn't the films fault, the cover isn't the films fault and the ending that doesn't tie in with Jason X is the fault of Jason Goes to Hell, its the fault of the Jason X writer. Thats like saying Halloween 4 & 5 suck because it has nothing to do with H20....

Also, and correct me if I'm wrong: But isn't that snake supposed to be the essence of Jason or whatever? Didn't it come out of Jason's final possessed victim, get into the woman's body, and then birth Jason through her?
Well, that's the impression I got anyway.

Yeah, you people can criticize away. Like I said, I respect all of your opinions. That still won't change mine. I wish you all could enjoy this film like I do, because it is a helluva lotta fun.
It doesn't work totally within the series.
It does have plot holes.
still...
It IS fun.
Hey Feverdog, the ch ch ch, ah ah ah, thing is running throughout the movie. Next time, turn the sound up! ;)

Ok, then it sucks because at the end of Jason Takes Manhattan Jason became....whatever the hell happened at the end of that movie, which Jason Goes to Hell conveniently ignores.
The sound is part of the movie, so of course it's the movie's fault if it sucks. Would you let the movie off easy if it was out of focus?
Ok, I was stretching with the snake. I wanted 13 reasons. How 'bout:
It sucks because open endings are the sign of a creatively bankrupt screenplay, indicating that the screenwriter had a) an unsatisfactory climax that needed one last "gotcha" cliche to involve the audience, which suggests he had b) no faith in the intelligence of this intended audience, therefore implying an insult to the viewers who aren't drooling idiots that have seen this tired technique used hundreds of times in (usually) better movies.
Better?

Feverdog,
Wow, Freddy's hand reaching up to take the mask says all that about the film? Geez, it didn't say that to me. The movie was already wrapped up, with a pretty good conflict, then conclusion.
Freddy's hand was just more or less a little treat for horror lovers who had been clamoring for a Freddy vs. Jason movie. I think you are being far too harsh on the movie for that scene alone. I mean, c'mon, throwing that in has nothing to do with the screenwriter's confidence in his script, or insulting the viewer's intelligence. It just doesn't. You can hate the scene, and the movie, but saying the screenwriter wasn't satisfied, so he threw that in just doesn't hold water. At least to me.
Like I said before, I respect everyone's opinions, so know that I'm not criticizing you or anything. You and I just disagree about the film, and that is cool.

The Evil dead nods in this film are cool...
Freddy's glove is cool...
Thats about it, and when the only good things you can say about a movie is when they use OTHER movies props then you know you are in trouble! Im all in favor of chnging things up but for some reason it never works out. They tried something "different" in part 5 and people hate that flick. Halloween tried to shake things up in 3 and 6 and look how they did. but its not bad to try only it rarely works. In Jason Goes To Hell the whole idea was moronic. Trying to bring in new family members, making Jason a freakin lizard, and most important, not having him in the flick for more than the 85% stated before...bad bad bad ideas...
I could rant and rave all day long about haw stupid this movie is but I do want to say one thing that erks me...
When we do get to see Jason, he looks plain old goofy. His mask is almost gone and he looks like he weighs 400 pounds. Just the WORST looking Jason in the series and that alone makes it a bad flick...add in all the other "wonderfull" ideas and you have a movie that may have tried but failed hard.

I can't stand this movie, I think its a total insult to the Friday the 13th series. IMO, the ending with Freddy's glove was one of the worst endings I've ever seen. It was just plain stupid and gave everyone a false sense of hope for the already many yeared rumor of a Freddy vs. Jason movie. Bad, bad movie capped off with a God awful ending. There, I'm done bitching.:)

I didn't think it was to bad. This was the only friday film that I love to hate. I either like or I don't. Jason goes to hell is neutral. I love 1,2,3,5,7But I hate 4,6 and 8. Jason goes to hell and Jason X were fun. they were cheezy. JGTH did have its ups:
Sharp camera shots- the friday films are usually grainy- or it's those bastards at paramount keeping them in the flooded basement again.
Jason is mucho creepy. gotta love that
some good characters
unnecissary swearing and nudity. much gore. So Jason goes to Hell isn't that bad. It's number 7 in my opinion. there are better friday films. But who cares?

Jason goes to hell was alot better than Jason takes manhatten. It had more gore, good story and decent acting.I still love Jason takes Manhatten but Jason goes to hell was wilder and more crazy with some gruesome special effects(melting people ah!).Now what bothers people the most is the lack of the jason. Some how it did'nt bother me cause i knew jason was in them people along. So please stop being so hateful.God it's Jason goes to hell and it's over the top entetaiment!

Couldn't have put it better myself. After all, the movie was Friday the 13th, Prt. 9!!! Since when is a movie, that is ninth in the series, supposed to be any good. I was just entertained, even if it wasn't the "typical" Friday-fare.
It has tons of gore and nudity. Isn't that why so many people liked the Sleepaway Camp series? Hmmm.

I truly and seriously dug JGtH. My DVD should be arriving in the mail any day now.
And seriously, the UNRATED version is the way to go. Mucho primo gore, nudity and general fun times for all.
And y'know what? This is the only Jason movie I really like! Because this is the only flick in the series that tries to tell a story instead of just being "psycho kills teenagers". I mean, come on. Eight movies with that shtick? How many ways can you come up with to kill people?
(OK, "The New Blood" added a nice little angle with the psychic girl, but it didn't affect the paint-by-numbers plotline all that much. The girl coulda blown fireballs out her ass as her special power and it wouldn't have made any difference in the flick.)
I'm really glad they didn't go the usual route with JGtH. Jason's killed in just about every way imaginable. What could he do for an encore that wouldn't be a repeat from the first 8 flicks? Give teenagers paper cuts and pour lemon juice over them?

You guys are all right. Jason goes to hell was a little different for me but i came to love this great flick. Once i saw the unrated version it became one of my favorites. for the people who didnt like it, you have to think its great for bringing back the gore. Since F13 7 and 8 lacked the gore or the full kill. You gotta love the gore coming back. Also, How far do you think New Line will take the new Jason movies?
