This is what I like the most in a horror film ( or not horror ) and don't like when it is too smooth.
I like to feel something being impressed, thrilled, chilled, impressed.
Good examples of atmospheric moments :
The beginning of Mulholland Drive with the car running through the hills in the night. The music from Badalamenti is really really atmospheric, he finds the Laura's Theme mood this time.
The beginning in The Hitcher ( the first 5 minutes ) The Hitcher is full of atmosphere.
The key - scene in Stagefright.
Silent Night Bloody Night is atmospheric, too.

Sleepy Hollow (10/10) and Interview With the Vampire (9/10) are both filled with amazingly gothic aptmosphere.

I think atmosphere is key in the horror genre.
The atmosphere should strength the mood of the film.
A bleak, depressing and gloomy atmosphere are the best.

The atmosphere is what made me fall in love with the horror genre. Other genres atmosphers often pale ten fold when held up to horrors.

Atmosphere is the key element in horror films. Without it, you haven't got much.

I concur. Atmosphere is very important for a horror film.

I mean, if none of the actors can breathe then you're gonna have a pretty short movie on your hands.
