Last year, with the word of Vanilla Sky, I was introduced to Open Your Eyes, the film on which this is based, directed by Alejandro (The Others) Amenabar, this is one creppy movie. Slaughters it's remake in quality, providing 3 times the scares, and being, oh-so thought provoking. An unforgettable movie experience, I was thinking about it for days. With twists galore, this movie never bored, never goes off track, and always entertains. If you stil haven't seem this masterpiece, you better go run to the video store and buy it.

Good movie. I liked it slightly better than VANILLA SKY.
BTW, this isn't a horrorfilm so I don't know what it's doing in Foreign Horror Talk

This is one hellava great film. I still haven't seen the remake, but I don't much care for it.

I think it borders on horror so it does rightfully belong in this forum.
I thought it was a great flick, Amenabar's taut direction makes every moment entertaining and thrilling
I thought Vanilla Sky was a faithful remake of Abre Los Ojos, but was it really necessary?

Agreed. ALO is an AMAZING film. Luckily, I saw it before VS. I purchased VS based on how much I liked it's predecessor, but was immensely disappointed. SO inferior.

I saw Open Your Eyes a couple of months after seeing Vanilla Sky and thought the original is far superior. The acting in Open Your Eyes is top notch. Every character has much more depth than in the remake (with the exception of Jason Lee's great performance in the remake).
I also loved the ending of Open Your Eyes much more than Vanilla Sky because....

(There. Don't say I didn't warn ya.)
Open Your Eyes took better advantage of the "this is a dream" scenario with the shootout outside the building. Much better than Tom Cruise running through an empty lobby yelling "TECH SUPPORT!" Plus, the original made it clearer that the nightmare was something that the main character was doing to himself, where in the remake gave us a long-winded exposition that amounted to nothing more than "Oops. It was a glitch. Sorry."

An absolutely terrific film! Eduardo Noriega proves himself to be a formidable presence in the horror/thriller genres (he was also excellent as the villain in THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE), and he could assume any of Tom Cruise's post-MAGNOLIA roles with more panache and machismo than the asexual superstar!
Plus, Noriega's chemistry with Penelope Cruz was palpable (and much better than Cruz's faux romance with pretend real-life lover Cruise, her co-star in VANILLA SKY).
And that score! WOW! Alejandro Amenabar, along with Guillermo Del Toro and M. Night Shyamalan, proves that the future of horror lies with foreign directors!

I own it and it is certainly one of my favorite films whatever the genres and the periods.
I love the characters, especially the "hero" ( Cesar ) all the characters look really cool and friendly ( Pelayo, Penelope Cruz, forgot her name in the film, was it Sofia ? )
The photography from Burman is great, too and so is the music from Amenabar ( who was helped because he does not know anything about the composition process )
