Spotlight on Emma Watson
DANIEL Radcliffe has gotten a lot of media mileage for playing the title role in the Harry Potter film series, but what about the actress who play his young female friend, Hermione Granger? It's time to focus the spotlight on 12-year-old Emma Watson, whose portrayal of the bookish and kind-hearted Hermione has charmed viewers everywhere:
On the scene, Emma comes across as a cool, polished and thoroughly professional performer, but it turns out that "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" was her first film. She honed her talent only in school production.
When she was tapped to play Hermione, Emma had a hard time because she's not at all like her screen character. "I'm not obsessed with books, I'm not obsessed with school and homework, and I'm not obsessed with not getting into trouble," she firmly declares.
She also had to say some pretty complicated lines that gave her a lot of trouble. Try this one on for size: "Mandrake or mangora is used to return those who have been petrified to their original state. It's also quite dangerous, and the mandrake's call is quite fatal to anyone who hears it." What a mouthful!
And yet, Emma was able to come up with a thoroughly winning performance as Hermione. What a confident and competent young actress.
How does she fare in her second film, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets?" "It was easier. Emma has become a bit more laid-back and she's not so worried about getting into trouble so much.
"I was also given more unusual things to do--like I become a cat in one scene! I loved that, because I have two cats at home.
"My character also gets a crush on her teacher. Now, I really had a hard time with that, because the teacher was played as such an irritating character. But Hermione is supposed to be so lovey-dovey about him that she's oblivious to his flaws, so that's the way I had to play it. It was tough!"
