OK, let me start off by saying that I live in a sewer system. Not literally, but when it comes to movies, I live in a sewer system. In my little town there is a seven-screen multiplex. That doesn't seem so bad, right? Well, this seven-screen multiplex puts The Master of Disguise on two screens and says "Screw you, One Hour Photo, Moonlight Mile, Atanarjuat - The Fast Runner, etc.!"

I detest when studios place what appear to be quality films into the hell known as "Limited Release" just to gather some indie cred/Oscar buzz or to "test the waters." It means that I end up going to Halifax (which sometimes doesn't even get those films) or waiting for video for a film that looks really good! I know some of you people in big urban centres won't understand what I'm going on about, and I know that's how Hollywood works, but I'm still pissed!

Nate.

I agree with you Nate, limited release SUCKS. We have to wait and wait if the film can make it to your local theatre, and if that good movie is not successful in limited release, you have to wait longer until it comes on video. What kind of bonehead came up with that idea anyway ?

I love limited release! It gives me a chance to act superior to the Bumblefuck Schmoes when a movie they want to see doesn't open for another month near them but opened in my city last week. :D :p

Of course, the B-fuck Schmoes have had over a week to see the Vegetales movie before me...

Seriously, the limited release route is sometimes the better way to go. Would My Big Fat Greek Wedding have grossed $160m if it had been immediately dumped in 3000 screens?

Most everybody can see a "limited release" movie if you've got a car. I have a friend in Bumblefuck, VA who drove four hours to see Requiem For a Dream. I don't know if I would do that, however; I grew up minutes outside Philly and its Ritz Theatres which play all the "cool" movies...

That's not my point. I understand how it can be more successful, I'm just talking from a personal point of view, not from a business standpoint. And being only 16 and on the graduated license thing, unless my parents drive me I can't really even go to Halifax to see a limited release film.

I agree with you nate limited release sucks, or how about this, the theater thats closest to me (about 20 miles) will only play a movie for about a week or two and when they do start playing it it's already been in theaters for two months or so

Nate, I live in Halifax and they didn't get The Man Who Wasn't There last year...ironically it was the film that wasn't there, the only one I really wanted to see...also so far Punch-Drunk Love is nowhere on the horizons for Halifax...I hate this sooo fucking much. Oh and I am a university student, with no car or money to pay for gas...however I am sure I can scrounge together a few bucks for a ticket to PUNCHDRUNK LOVE DAMMIT!!!

Yeah, you guys have it a little better than we do, but it's still not much. Toronto is the only option, I suppose, and that's far away. And I want to see Punch-Drunk Love too!

Nate, it seems you and I are only a couple sewers away from each other brother.

The closest thing to an indipendent movie my theater has ever gotten is My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Although they did put up the poster for "Tadpole", don't know why, maybe for a little recognition.

"Hey, look guys, the theater's showing an Indi-flick." Yeah fucking right.

I live in the shit-hole that is Mississippi. So I don't think there is ONE theater in the state that'll play the movies we Schmoes love. Punch-Drunk Love, Memento...etc.

Even my local Blockbuster sucks, one copy of Memento on the back shelf next to "Black Knight".

So to answer you're question Nate, yes, limited release does suck boatloads of ass.

BOATLOADS!

I agree that Limited Release isn't that nice to those that live outside of New York and LA, but I don't mind it that much. I normally get the LR movies either they week they open (if they don't do the NY/LA Thing) or the next week after (if they do do the NY/LA thing). I live in a pretty big city that has three huge movie theatres, and within a 15 minute drive in all directions there are at least 10 more theares. So I'm happy...

Yeah limited release does suck. I'm from Virginia but I am going to college in PA and the local theatre doesn't show any of the limited release movies. I went home on the 19th and Punch Drunk Love wasn't showing. Well now it is showing back at home and I'm stuck here and can't go see it since the local theatre doesn't show it. Knowing my luck by the time I get home for Thanksgiving my theatre at home won't be showing it. Same thing happened with One Hour Photo for me.
