View Full Version : Jason Takes Manhattan = Guilty Pleasure!!!

For whatever reason I'm lying in bed the other night and out of the blue I get the urge to watch "Jason Takes Manhattan" again. I can't explain for the life of me why I wanted to see this flick again. Especially since I had just had some relations with my girlfriend and was lying in the afterglow.

I mean who does that and all of a sudden goes "Hey, I want to see the 7th sequel to a slasher flick which everybody pretty much agrees sucks!"

Anyways, after watching it, I decided that this film is a great guilty pleasure.

From "Wayne" the geek, to "JJ" his fake guitar playing rocker chick...to "Julius" the badass boxer. I love them all.

I used to love this movie when I was a kid. Then when I joined the horror loving community online I began to jump on the bandwagon with everybody else who loved to bash this film.

But the other night while watching it I realized that this film is a great guilty pleasure. It's just a fun movie to watch. However, I do have my complaints.

First of all...all the damn TELEPORTING! That is one thing that is very hard to overlook and this is the only film in the series where it is really gutwrenchingly lame. It just takes all the tenseness out of the film.

THE ENDING: It's just stupid. The sewer floods out with Toxic waste every night??? And the final image is just horrible and really makes no sense at all. So the ending is a bummer. Although, I do like the sewer setting, very cool.

But even though it spends most of it's duration on a "love boat" (a term the original box cover actually usues...ha!) They do end up in Manhattan eventually, and I love the time they spent there. Even though it is limited they do have some fun with these scenes. It's great to see people's virtual nonreactions to a decaying corpse with a hockey mask. Good times!

I also love when he throws that chick into the wall on the subway..whohoo! And notice, on the poster that is shown at the back of the car, in the lower left hand corner it says "Jason lives!" in marker.

The music is pure eighties and it always gets the nostalgia flowin' through me. During the end "peaceful" song to let you know everything is alright, my bro came in and started singing these hilarious words to it...it was like...

"and now the soothing 80's synthesizer to let you know the killer's dead...do..do..do...It's okay cause it's daylight now and everything's much more peaceful...do...do...do."

Okay...maybe you had to be there. :)

Anyways, what I wanted to say is that I love this movie. I realize it is bad...cheesy cinema. But in the world of "guilty pleasures" Jason Takes Manhattan will always be my dish of choice.

My favorite line: "Now I say we regroup, and go out and find this mothafucka before he finds us!"

I've never understood why people don't like this one. Ok, so the title is misleading, who cares I thought it was an above average slasher film

Gotta agree with Cory, no guilty pleasures for me; but I love this film regardless. It's cheesy, it's hilarious, it kicks ass. What can I say? It just entertains the hell out of me.

It is a fun film. It's a cheezy it actually comes off quite well. The only thing (sh!t sorry) which kind of confused/irritaed me was the bit with the mask. You know when Jason comes on the boat for the first time and convieniently finds a replica of the mask which was destroyed in the last one. I know Im being picky and please feel free to take the p!ss but it was the only bit in the film where I was like 'god damn it!'. You know what I mean ?

Anyway I think Jason should go on Holiday (Sorry, Vacation!) more often. Next up Friday the 13th Part 11 : Jason Takes Disney Land

I love Jason Takes Manhattan. I think Julius is the coolest character from F13ths right after Jason.

This is definitely an enjoyable flick. It has an inexplicable charm to it that demands repeated viewings. You must marinate in the cheese! What's really surprising is that you can have fun with Jason Takes Manhattan in spite of the lack of gore and nudity. This is impressive since the F13 franchise pretty much falls back on those two ingredients to stimulate the audience.

The 8th one sealed the deal for me.I loved the Friday the 13th series and when I was a little kid and was in school and asked who my role model was.Jason Voorhees was my response.I must be crazy or something.

I have to disagree and say this movie was blah. I dont care that he was on the ship or any of the ending or the teleportation. it's just most of the movie screams of been there done that, it's not worthless parts are fun but I still thing that part 9 and 10 were better.

hrmm.. guilty pleasure... I wouldn't call it that cause I dont watch the movie for "the wrong reasons.." VIII DEFINITELY has some of the best replay value in the series..

and as Greorious pointed out (that is THE coolest avatar I've seen so far btw....well... that and Count's crooooooooow!)
JULIUS is a VERRY VERRRRRRRY cool guy.

Why, thank you! Initially, I wasn't going to bother with an avatar, but once I saw Crow, I had no other option!

Yeah, I just kinda meant that I like it too. Not just have it as a guilty pleasure...what is a guilty pleasure anyways?

I need to check this one out again. I know I watched it on HBO back in around 89-90, somewhere around there, and didn't like it all that much. This, after I had seen prt. 6 and 7 in the theaters and loved them. (Yes, I had seen the previous 5 movies on VHS as well).

But, as time has passes, I have grown to really appreciate "bad" movies. Not trying to offend the fans of the movie by calling it "bad", but you know what I mean. Afterall, this thread is about this film being a guilty pleasure.

Strange, now that I think of it, this is the only Friday movie that I have seen only once, and never rented or bought.

Guess it moves up the list of films to see.

WOW, I haven't been back to this thread in like 2 days

I'm glad I got such a positive response, long live jason Takes Manhattan!

Anyways, the only reason I referred to it as a guilty pleasure is because of how much flack it gets. I enjoy it, guilty pleasure or not, and it will always get play in my VCR...

by the way...thanks for the response guys.
