I cannot wait to see this movie. Adam Sandler looks wonderful in the trailer, and this might be one of the best of 2002, and possibly a best picture nominee. I am a huge PT Anderson fan, both of his films (Boogie Nights, and Magnolia) get 4/4 stars in my book. But there is just something about this film that looks wonderful and has a little magical feel to it. Am I the only one here who would kill to see this film??

im not going to say that this movie will go as far as to snab a best picture nominee because there are so many other well-seeming anticipated movies about to come out. i saw the trailer and yes i want to see it. not only because i am also a big pt anderson fan (btw is he still with fiona apple?, i love fiona apple, lol, anyway) but because i trust enough that adam sandler will do a great job as will emily watson. i eagerly await this. lol. i wouldnt kill to see this film though, killing is badd... remember that. heh heh. its got a crazy plot though! but thats pt anderson for ya. so i cant wait to see it, it might get a screenplay nod, maybe a director nod, but i dunno, the academy is very weird sometimes, so i wouldn't say anything is final juss yet.

It does have a crazy plot. But Oscar voters have gone out on a limb here and there putting up controverseal movies, so I think this one has a decent shot. Since Emily Watson is in this (oscar favorite) that should help the nominations...

PT Anderson is my favorite fucking filmaker right now! I love all 3 of his movies. They are all perfect. Boogie Nights, Magnolia and Hard Eight are three of my favorite films of all time. Punch Drunk Love WILL BE my favorite movie of 2002! I guarantee it! There is not a single doubt in my mind.

This may be just me, but I have always imagined this film to be rated PG13. I don't know what it was, but that's what I would have guessed, since I was hearing this film being called, "This years Moulin Rouge," some months ago. I was at the theater today, and lo and behold, they had just put up a poster for Punch Drunk Love. My eyes immediately move down to the bottom left corner of the poster to scope out the rating. All I saw was a big fat "R" and I flipped. How can you do a fantasy type romance film with Strong Language. This I don't understand. Are the two even compatible? I suppose I should've known since every film Anderson has made has been R-rated for that same reason, along with others. NOT that I'm against R-rated movies, its just that I didn't expect a romance film like I've seen in the trailers to be R. I'm probably overreacting, but is there a point for excessive profanity? I thought this was supposed to be a fantasy, or is the idea I've had in my head entirely misconstrued?
I still am really excited about seeing the film, don't get me wrong, but this came as a surprise since basically zero has been said about the film. I suppose this will turn out to be a much different film than I imagined.

the whole story is crazy about phone sex and whatnot. and pt anderson is just a crazy guy and all of his movie (all of which were awesome i agree) have some extreme profanity to it. so its no wonder that this one is rated R.

I need to see it so bad! Adam Sandler looks great in the trailers along with Emma Thompson, maybe now Sandler can prove to critics and the academy all of the talent he has. What do you think his performance is gonna be like? Razzie Material? Oscar Material? Voice your opinion please!

god.. am i the only guy out there who hates ADAM SANDLER? in MY OPINION, he's not even funny. and he basically plays himself in ALL OF HIS MOVIES!! (including his stupid ones, LITTLE NICKY and WATERBOY). i honestly think PAULY SHORE's funnier than him.. and that's scary.
i think the only movie i actually liked with him in it was AIRHEADS... and.. that's about it. i keep mixing him up with that other guy in those other crappy movies, Douche Biggalo (or some crap like that).
//out.
oh'yea, are you guys talking about that cartoon he's in? is that it?

Adam Sandler acts very differently in person.
and point of the matter, you could say the same thing about Jack Nicholson.
yeah, I made the comparison.

If you do not know who PT Anderson is you have no right to even be replying to this thread. PDL is a PT Anderson movie, it is NOT an Adam Sandler movie. Yes, he is in it but he won't be playing a typical "Sandler role".

Yeah, it has Adam Sandler, so that's a negative, but on the positive side, PTA is helming it. He might, just might get a good performance out of Sandler. Never mind, what am I talking 'bout? I'll still see anything PTA directs, even if it stars Pauly Shore (I'll probably regret this sooner or later).

Come ON, Fergus! Are you against the rating because you're too young to get into the movie now? This film looks great, and I'm glad to hear it has an R rating (though I never pictured it getting a PG-13 in the first place) because I expected Hoffman's character to be the type of person who'd swear a lot. And now I know he will, with us people who are 17 and older ( http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif) enjoying the adult comedic-ness of it all.
Just feel free to come over to my house and sock me in the jaw if I've offended you greatly (not intended. It's all in fun), and you happen to actually be 30 or something. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif

Looks like Magnolia lite, with a less interesting story.
PA has lost his mind with this one, from what i've seen in the trailer,i think at the tender age of 30,or whatever he is,he's already on the decline.Such amazing promise with his self assured, confident Boogie Nights,i was expecting great things from this young man. Then the too fantastical to be taken as a serious character study Magnolia, now this whimsical, cliched "Love" story with an Adam Sandler trying to act serious. This is an oscar worth performance?Surely you jest. No,acting all meek and innocent, and screaming into a phone don't a great performance make.
Then we get the competent but overrated Seymour Hoffman(he has to be in this,he's PA's friend),with what amounts to an over the top nonsensical dispay of acting.
When i heard of the premise,i could'nt help but think of the film Happiness. This definitely has elements of that one, with vindictive, nasty kin,and a virtual shut in who is addicted to phone sex(that part was played by Hoffman in Happiness),who really only wants someone to love.
I don't know,i think PA should adapt a novel or something, because his stories are getting ludicrous, and how many times do we have to see PSH and Luiz Guzman.
Cannes, they fawn over everything over there,i would'nt take everything they praise seriously, plus they have a bias towards PA.The film looks good, but not even close to great,or Oscar worthy.Boogie Nights was,and the irony is that this is the one that will probably get Sandler and PA some Academy respect. The one that should have was overlooked, this inferior, pedestrian effort will most likely do it.
Sorry,Sandler can't act,he's an entertainer,not a true thespian.I know,what's the difference?All i have to say is,take a look at Clive Owen,Jalil Lespert,Heather Ann Foster,Gina Mckee.That's acting,this is a comedian(not even a funny one),trying to prove he can.

I've also appreciated (if not necessarily loved) all of Anderson's previous flicks, and was wary about this one due to the presence of Sandler... but right from the first line, hearing him reading that completely Paul Thomas Anderson style dialogue.... I smiled. Kudos to Sandler for trying something different.
By the way, has anyone else noticed that almost all of Philip Seymore Hoffman's roles revolve around him talking to someone on a telephone?

what i'm digging about this one is that, from the trailer, it seems like it still has the spirit of an adam sandler film, just much better.
it's got those same weird gags, and outbursts, and him being picked on, but it's a PT anderson flick.
im really interested in this one.
