I really don't think there are as many in the old version. There are one or two appearances of "the face", but they are plentiful in "The version you've never seen."

So, yeah, they upped the count of creepy appearances for the new version.

I was always told they appeared in one frame at various points in a "subliminal messaging" technique in the original, which is why people got so freaked out when The Exorcist was first shown in cinemas. (Subliminal messaging means placing an image in just one frame of the film, faster than the eye can see but the brain still registers the image. Advertisers used it in TV commercials until it was outlawed in the 60's.)

One of the "scary faces" is an actress who was Linda Blair's body double during the shoot, so they must have made these images during the original production. Anyway, that's what I've heard.

There is at least one subliminal image (maybe two) in the Exorcist (the original version). This is definite. I know this because I watched the original a number of years before the Director's Cut came out and remembered the subliminal flashes more than any other scene in the film.

Since the Director's Cut came out, that's the only one I ever watch because it's so much better than the original so my knowledge of the original has waned a bit, but if the original had the scene where Karras dreams of his mother coming up the stairs of the subway, then there's a flash there. Otherwise, it's later on during a Regan scene.

One flash that definitely isn't in the original one is when Karras looks up when he hears a noise coming from upstairs and a face flashes above his shoulder. Excellent fright there, because I wasn't expecting it.

i knew about those flashes but i thought he was on about the face that appears 4 a second behind ellen burstyn when she is in the kitchen on the side of the wall. that is only in TVYNS.

I was @ this girls house watching the Original release version and the face only shows up once and that's when the mother is in the kitchen adn the lights flicker. The face flashes up there. But in the new version it comes up in the doctors office.
Scary shit.

The only time I remember seeing the face on the original version is when Father Karras is having his "nightmare" and sees his mother entering the subway through the stairs. He tries to run after her, but can't, then we see a flash of the face.

Once, a long long time ago, I swear I saw the face flash on the screen as soon as the movie faded to black at the end too. But I've watched the older version since then, and haven't seen it. Weird. I would've sworn it was there though.

But yeah, like I said earlier, they upped the creepy face factor immensely in the newer version.
