THE FOG (1980). John Carpenter's worthy follow-up to his classic 1978 smash hit "Halloween" is more ghost story than slasher flick, as it tells the tale of the spirits of a drowned leper colony who met their doom 100 years earlier in a shipwreck orchestrated by a coastal town's six founding fathers.

Sporting various weapons and hooks for hands, these ghouls seek revenge against the citizens of Antonio Bay, a California seaside community celebrating its centennial, as retribution for "the sins of their fathers". As a mysterious fog envelops the town, the denizens are attacked in various locales (including a beach house, fishing boat and Catholic church).

The film boasts an excellent cast, led by Adrienne Barbeau (in her best role to date) as sexy disc jockey Stevie Wayne, who is isolated for most of the film in a creepy lighthouse which serves as the town's radio station. The rest of the cast includes: the mother-daughter Scream Queen team of Janet Leigh and Jamie Lee Curtis, Hal Holbrook as an alcoholic priest, Tom Atkins as a local fisherman, a pre-credits cameo by John Houseman as an old sea captain, Ty Mitchell as Barbeau’s young son, and Carpenter staples Charles Cyphers and Nancy Loomis (of "Halloween" and "Assault On Precinct 13" fame).

Carpenter provides the film's excellent musical score, as he did in "Halloween".

In the end, the lead characters are surprisingly under-jeopardized (Barbeau and Curtis are attacked, but only Holbrook loses his head). Nevertheless, the film works primarily because of Barbeau's tour-de-force performance and the moody atmosphere that is present throughout most of Carpenter's work. My grade: B+

I wasn't that impressed. It wasn't anything really awful but it wasn't great. The story seemed very hokey and cliched. It had some atmosphere with the cool looking glowing fog, but the threat when realised wasn't that great. I couldn't take the idea of pirate ghosts seriously at all. The performances were okay, but I seem to recall there were too many characters. One of John Carpenter's less impressive efforts.

very atmospheric, underrated according to me.
the bodycount could have been bigger, although the ending SPOILER makes me want to think that there are a lot of deads.

I agree that this is an underrated classic. The music was great and the whole setup of the story was well done. I love how Carpenter had most of the cast from previous films of his. Blake and his men were creepy with their red glowing eyes and menacing knocks on the door. The hooks knocking on the door creeped me out when i was a kid. The best thing was the setting of this movie. The lighthouse and the church were creepy on their own without the ghosts and Stevie Wayne's house was very cool. I wish i lived in a place like that.

I first thought when i saw this film, that it was very creepy and had and interesting storyline. However, as this film went on, it became very formulaic and predictable. I thought it was a decent horror film. But, I have to say that my favorite part is the very end where the ghosts disappear then return and behead the priest? That was really cool.

hmm, i'd give it a C- if I ever gave letter grade ratings. Not that scary at all. Johnny Carpender is a good director if he tries...and he tried, and this movie looks good, but i was not scared.

Phil, in answer to your question. I haven`t seen this in awhile ,but I think the ghost pirates returned in the end to claim their 6th and final victim. There were 6 founding fathers of the town who betrayed the lepers and caused them crash their ship. The beheading of the priest was the 6th death. I guess getting their gold back wasn`t enough. Hope this helps.
