I just saw this film today. Oh my God. What an intense, disturbing film. It's from Germany and it was directed Michael Haneke. One scene in particular got me in the gut.

Anyone else seen it?

I definitely thought it was a brilliant touch. It is a reminder that even though you were disturbed by the previous scenes, none of it is REAL.

I have it on VHS. It was pretty well done, but it wasn't quite as disturbing as I was expecting. Some people were tagging it the most disturbing ever. It didn't quite make that cut for me. Henry Portrait of Serial Killer was better in m opinion.

This is actually on in an hour on IFC. I'll be watching it for the first time (If I can stay awake).

It scared the living daylights out of me and the rewind scene in particular was extremely disturbing, but oh so poignant. Creepy and unbearable... don't wanna see this one again...

Oh man, Funny Games is one harrowing viewing experience! In my mind, this was a truly frightening movie, made more so by the plausibility of the situation. Let's face it, this is something that could really happen. The family wasn't dealing with monsters or demons, but with extremely disturbed human beings. I also liked the fact that the director did not shy away from the violence, but rather presented it in a stark, brutal manner. The moments of violence, IMO, were made more intense because they were such a contrast to the wink-and-a-nod asides to the audience by the killer. Too bad more American directors don't have the balls to make a film like Funny Games.

The film is designed by the director to appal and disturb you. It's kind of a 'fuck you' to the audience, and also 'how much of this can you stand?' He actually wanted people to leave the cinema/switch it off, which is a pretty bizarre thing to do. I watched it to the end, but then, I'm criminally insane.

Also, I'm pretty sure there's no on-screen violence at all.

Eventhough I would like to get the credit for this movie as a german, it is not german. Actually itīs Austrian:)

I LOVED that movie, more of an art or statement film than a fun movie.

Taking violence off of the screen and putting it in your head is usually more effective

Very clever and powerful film from Michael Hanneke and it is an austrian film, btw.
M Hanneke is graduated in psychology and phylosophy, no surprise.

A thriller with few equals. Uncomfortable pacing, understated script and stellar acting all in the hands of the very talented Micheal Haneke make this one edge of your seat film that you wont soon forget.

Everyone who likes quality genre cinema should definetly see this ASAP.

How about a brief review of what the movie is about for those of us who don't have a clue what you are talking about?

Plot: A family goes for a weekend to their country house. They're happy. Soon after they arrive, a man appears asking them for eggs, saying that he's a guess of their neighbours. Another man appears, a friend of the first one. But they aren't guesses. They are a couple of psychos looking for their next victim... the family. But they don't want to kill them quickly, because they know that us, the audience, want to see how they psychologically play with (torture) their victims...

More or less, this is the movie. Almost no violence is shown in it (everything is heard, or happens before/after the camera shoot it), we just see the consequences of it (phisical and psychological). And the most disturbing thing about it is that the killers make the audience not only the witness, but the (suposedly) enjoyed accomplice... And it feels like a real hit with a hammer in the face!

Thanks for the recap. I've seen the title run by on my cable channel, but didn't realize it was a horror movie--sounded like dumb comedy material. I'll have to keep an eye out for it 'cause it sounds good.

I got chills just reading the name of this movie again. I saw it like 3 years ago and am still haunted by it. A brutal, uncompromising movie if their ever was one.

Great movie!
I loved every minute of it!

I didn't know, what to expect, but you had to be 20 years old, to see it at the movies in Switzerland, so...I got interested in it. ;) (I know: I'm a freak!)

I loved the play with the discussions and the whole "Beavis & Butthead"-Thing. The brutal ending got me chilling...

BTW: one of the two Psychos plays in another Austrian-German co-production called "Kaliber Deluxe" (german title).
It's about 2 gangs trying to rob the same place in different ways (one gang really wants to rob it, the other one tries to trick it). Afterwards a teenager is caught in the residence of one gang and gets between the fronts.
It's not a horror-movie, but a pretty cool thriller with some gore and mucho black humor in it.

Excellent flick with a downbeat ending. My brother, who is like me in almost every other respect when it comes to movies hated this movie. Seems there is no inbetween, love it or hate it. I put it in my top 10.

I have to say I hate Funny Games with a passion I usually reserve for people who come to my door and try to sell me religion. Although I understand the purpose of the film was to shock and make the audience feel like a willing accomplice to the psycholocical torture being portrayed on screen I jest felt the whole thing was so ham fisted and blatantly trying to offend that it negated it's own message. There is a place for blatant expression and a place for subtlety and I think that the director got the timing all wrong.

Many people seem to love the rewind but I found it to be little more than a pretentious bit of wankery - the director winking at the audience and saying, "ooh, aren't I clever, my movie is so believable that I have to remind you that everything you're seeing is just a movie - or is it?" If you want a really disturbing psychological horror, track down Closet Land or The Isle.

Cliche,

I totally understand your position on Funny Games though it struck me differently. I must say however that I hadn't heard of the 2 movies you mentioned, Closet Land and The Isle and will search them out.
