View Full Version : Commercials shown at the movie theatre ?- a rant

In the past, we could just watch a movie with movie previews at the theatre. Now they're showing commercials, most of them are the SAME commercials we see on T.V. Movie theatres were ment to be a place for MOVIES not commercial advertising. If the companies think this an effective way of selling their products, then they are dead wrong.

At my theatre it's just two or three commericals so I don't really mind, but if they increase it, it will get annoying.

I hate, hate, hate commericals before movies. Especially when they show a humorous commerical that I've seen on TV about 600 times and everyone in the theater laughs like it's the first time they've seen it. I mean, they can't have been living under a rock for the past month, right? That stupid "smothered, living M&M in the Valentine's Day candy box" plug has been on forever, yet everytime it's shown before a movie... everyone but me cracks up. WHY?!?!?
:::Catches Breath::: Sorry, got carried away there. They should at least make custom commericals for movies. It'd be pretty interesting to see Anthony Hopkins, as Hannibal Lecter, plugging Reebok shoes before "Red Dragon" starts.

Exactly! Any movie fan knows that sometimes the previews can be more fun than the feature presentation and to ruin that special time with M & M and Coke commercials makes me very IRRITATED!

Who else predicts that within the next 20 years, movies shown in the theater will stop for commercial breaks?
I hope it doesn't happen, but it doesn't seem so far fetched nowadays.

Simple equation:
I pay $10 for a movie in New York
+
About $4.50 for Sour Patch Kids and about $6.00 for a Soda
= $20.50 roughly to watch a movie........
And you want to show me commericals while I'm waiting and before the PREVIEWS!!!!!!!?
And yet somehow with all this extra revenue, tickets aren't getting cheaper!!!! (Seething)..... Socialism is starting to look rather inviting right about now.

The M&M commercials make me mad the most. Especially when people actually laugh at them! They aren't funny! Stop laughing, you idiots!

Six dollares for a soda:( [This is why I smuggle in my own pop and candy, Of course I can only pull this little trick in winter when I'm wearing my coat with really big pockets]
I hate comercials during the movie! Man! that makes me mad! I think there's what about five minutes until the movie starts? Damn!

At first I didn't like, but since they keep it to about two commericals which usually aren't that bad I really don't mind.

I don't mind the commercials because it gives me more time for the bathrooms and the snack bar.
I feel a Monty Python song coming on.

SSHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHH
Lighten up guys, it's just a commercial. Or ten.
I don't really care that much, although it does make me very anxious. Coz i really want to see the movie and all. But i don't get restless or anything. ANd no one i have ever been in a movie theter has laughed at the "humouress" commercials. Everyone justs sits there.
Oh, I'm still posting. Better leave with some dignity so I'll stop.

I detest commercials shown before movies. Why? Because when I go to a movie, the last thing I want to see on screen is some Nissan ad. I come for entertainment, not to have my time wasted being sold things! I spent enough frickin' money on the ticket and the snacks! ARG!

I couldn't agree with this post more. Every time I see Brittney Spears selling Pepsi, I want to go on a shooting rampage, namely at the nearest Pepsi distribution warehouse. And I hate the commericals they have now for movies, they show so much of the plot, that I don't even want to see it. I litterally cover my ears during the commercials, it's ri-fucking-diculous!

Sorry I only usually pop in when this topic is discussed. Please visit our web site for more information about making your voice known to these theaters.
http://www.captiveaudience.org/
Our target is the Regal Theater group, but it applies to all commercial playing theater chains.
Also, I'm compiling a list of companies that run commercials in movie theaters, and a list of theater chains that run these commercials. If you can remember who owns the theater you saw commercials at, and who's commercials you saw, please drop me a note at info@captiveaudience.org.

I do not condone commercials in movie theaters at all, and many people I know are outraged that they would do such a thing, but, I am not particularly offended by it. I figure, there is more time for snacks, and, it is not as though they are putting them in the middle of the movie. Sure, it would be better if they weren't there...but...they are, what? 1 or 2 minutes long a piece? Mainly, I am not on such a tight schedule that I can't spare the time to sit and let the movie people humor themselves.

HAHAHHAHHAHAAH
Sorry, I just saw that fucking commercial for the 4th time tonight within the last two weeks, and I couldn't agree with you more.
"I'm still thirsty."
"Here, take mine." NO! DON'T TAKE IT, YOU DAMNED UNFUNNY MORON! STAY IN YOUR RACE CAR!
Or the fucking Football Town commercial. Hell, a fucking COMMERCIAL. I want to see a movie, I love previews. The 4 minutes wasted on three commercials is enough to get me two solid trailers! It's the MOVIES, not television!
But it's still only about 1/10th as bad as a bastard leaving on their cell phone... and then ANSWERING IT. Man, now my blood is boiling.
Yeah, commercials are pretty weak, basically because they play really stupid ones. I mean, when you see a painfully unfunny commercial at home, you change the channel. When you see it in a theatre with two hundred people its...painful.
P.S. yeah, Sour Patch Kids rule.
My theatre plays commercials and my ticket prices are $4.50 before 7 pm and $6.00 at 9 pm. My trusty old soda is $1.50 (with free refills mind you). Candy is from $.50 to $1.50 and Popcorn is $3.00 for a large tub and a refill.
GOD BLESS COMMERCIALS!!!!!!!!!!!

it's getting ridiculous. i don't know if the theater gets a kickback or the film studio or both.
writermanx, i agree with you... at least make the movie commercials original!

Well, I think that they have gotten lazy with showing the commericals.
I remember in 84(?) when I went to see INdiana Jones and the Temple of Doom...
Before the movie, the premiered a Pepsi/Michael Jackson commerical - the one with Alfonso breakdancing.
This was great, but they never showed the commercial on TV until the movie ran for quite a while.
I'm fine with that, but don't make me feel like I brought my TV to the movies.
So yeah, I would like the commericals to be exclusive, but overall, I appreciate the delay of game.

This past weekend I went to see Analyze That and almost walked out. I was ready to demand my money back from the theater because I had to sit through NINE commercials!!
Yes, NINE: Nissan, Coke, Movie Tickets.Com, AMC Moviewatcher, US Army, Game Cube, Lego Bionicle, M&M, and one other that I can't remember.
I paid $12 for 2 people to see this movie, I should NOT have to sit through NINE commercials! I am very tempted to just wait a few weeks and watch all of my movies at the 50 cent theater.
This is at the AMC Lennox 24 in Columbus, OH, just so you know.

When i go to the movies, its so I can sit through it and to keep my atention on one thing, because when there are commercials my mind wavers and i am not focused at all.
To help me stay nice and focused, me and my friends will MAKE the commercials funny, with comments such as "Boy I can't wait to see that movie!" or equivalent sayings as the like.
I detest commercials before a movie. If it isnt upcoming trailers I aint interested. Also, why dont they showcase those mini animated flicks that are always up for awards at the Oscars, but yet we NEVER know about them TIL the Oscars?
What really blew my mind was when I went to see TTT's a few weeks back. Aside from commercials, I was hit with a 2 minute ad for starving children in some buttfuck third world country! WTF?????????? How DARE these fucking theaters take my money and show me this shit! I'm just as charitable as the next person, but I go to the show as a means of ESCAPING REALITY
and this miserable fucking world... NOT to be acosted with images of sickly kids begging for food while I stuff my face with nachos!.... not that I feel gulity... it makes me fricken NAUSEOUS! There's a time and place for this shit, and the theater is NOT it! Reverse psychology doesnt work on me. The LAST thing they're gonna do is succeed in making me feel guilty... "oh... well off American sitting in his air conditioned theater in his free country eating comfort food while kids are fighting crows for seed on the ground under the hot sweltering desert sun". NOPE.. dont fucking care.... not when I KNOW what their aim is to do.... which is to make me feel GUILTY. Save that fucking shit for PBS telethons, or paid tv commercials... where I can have the power to change the channel once I've had enough.... but if I PAY to be entertained, dont show me 7 year olds with giant bellies due to malnutrition..... LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE when I want to ESCAPE from that fucking reality!
