Friday the 13th, Part VIII is one of the more entertaining entries in this infamous slasher series. Most fans disliked it, partly due to its new settings, but I found it a refreshing, long-overdue change of pace. After the six previous sequels, I was getting tired of that same old summer camp, and I suspect even Jason might have felt that way by this point. It's an entertaining movie if not taken too seriously, especially the final act, where he chases potential victims all over the back alleys of New York City. The sewer finale is what a Jason movie is like at its cheesy best; pretty goofy if held up to the light of day, but fun to watch if you're in the right mood.

Actually, its subtitle is a bit misleading. Much of the film takes place aboard a small cruise ship filled with students. That makes things a bit more interesting, due to their isolation in a confined space; it's not like they can just get up and run off. Perhaps it's too convenient that the bodies remain undiscovered for so long, but logic was never a priority in most slasher movies. Another point of consternation among fans was Jason's new teleporting ability, but that didn't bother me too much. If he truly has a supernatural hellspawn living within him, as the next film would reveal, it only stands to reason that he has other supernatural aspects that have not yet been touched upon. The bizarre subplot about the heroine's telepathic powers (shades of Friday 7) are not adequately explained, but exposition never fit comfortably in the series. If it makes things more interesting, why not include it? All in good fun.

On a technical level, this is arguably the most polished film in the series (with the possible exception of Jason X). More effort than usual was put into the lighting, and the camerawork is smooth and assured. Most of the time, it doesn't even look like a slasher movie. Though most of the Manhattan scenes were actually filmed in Canada, director Rob Hedden manages to preserve the illusion by a couple of brief, carefully inserted Times Square scenes.

The acting is much better than usual for this type of film, especially a strong supporting performance from Peter Mark Richman as a coldhearted, overprotective uncle. Jensen Dagget is likable as the troubled heroine; overall the performances are credible, if not outstanding. At the very least, the characters are not nearly as obnoxious as they were in previous outings. Even the obligatory "slut" character is somewhat more tolerable than usual. The most ironic part is that the Big Apple is portrayed in such a nasty light that Jason himself doesn't seem too bad in comparison. Kane Hodder still makes him a compelling killer though. Grab a beer and enjoy.

6/10.

This movie was not entertaining, fun or good in any way. It was well really fucking boring. sorry but except for 3 scenes this movie was crap. go do something better, like beat your head against the wall. I wont bother commenting on the acting because none of the films are acted well or even that good, but at least they entertained me and thats all i ask. this didnt entertain men. it pissed me the fuck off. It has to be the worst in this series.

I happen to agree. (6/10)

I thought the flick had many fun moments and the whole time on the boat was a fun time. A few deaths did disappoint but overall it ain't so bad!

The New York scenes had a very dark tone and it worked for the most part but the sewer scene at the end was pretty weak in my opinion.

It's up there in the Friday the 13th series. Sixth place in fact.

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 8 - JASON TAKES MANHATTAN (1989)

THE GOOD:

--One thing I appreciated about "Jason Takes Manhattan" is that it at least tries to go somewhere different with the Friday series. Unfortunately it ended up taking it to a new degree of badness, but they at least tried to stay away from the formula and I have respect for people who try new things.

--Jason seeing the poster of the hockey mask was TOO COOL for words!

THE BAD:

--This movie is, simply put, wasted potential. Who else would've preferred to see Jason really take on Manhattan instead of wasting time killing people on a boat and then ending up in Manhattan and not killing hardly anyone? Also, I think the lead character had potential to be a more developed character as her past with Jason was kinda interesting, but it was a hardly used plot device.

--The acting and characters were AWFUL. I can put it no other way - I wanted everyone in this movie to DIE. I even wanted JASON to die! His schtick is tired!

--Why would the boat even go ahead with the sailing if they knew there was a storm coming? This would be acceptable if the captain and crew only found out there was a storm coming during the sailing, but this captain knew beforehand therefore the sailing should've never even gone ahead.

--The kills in this movie are bloodless, unimaginative and boring. Usually I can expect from good kills from a crap Friday movie, but not "Jason Takes Manhattan".

--I would love to know how on EARTH Jason gets from place to place in this movie. One minute he's in an alleyway, the next at the top of a two-story building. And he's frickin' EVERYWHERE during the scene where he kills Kelly Hu. Also, how the goddamn hell did he get to bloody Manhattan by swimming so fast? Ridiculous! Jason can't teleport; he's still a human/monster/zombie/unkillable thing.

--This movie is so boring and slow, it drags on even with a short running time. Did they really need that useless story with the muggers/rapists? What purpose did that stupid, overlong scene with the African-American dude keeping on punching Jason (I felt like that scene went on for two YEARS)? Just kill the bastard already.

RATING:

2/10 - There are hardly any redeeming qualities about this film. I would rather got to a paint-drying contest than have to sit through this suspenseless drivel again.

IF YOU LIKED THIS MOVIE I RECOMMEND:

Friday the 13th (3/10)
Friday the 13th Part 5 - A New Beginning (5/10)
Friday the 13th Part 7 - The New Blood (7/10)
Halloween 3: Season of the Witch (0/10)
Jason X (5/10)

I really enjoy this film. As I have said a bajillion times before, I love the seemingly 'still caught in the 80's' feel of it. It was just a really good Friday... I gave it a 6/10 as well.

I don't know what you mean he killed 19 people in JTM that's more than he killed in 2,3,4,6 and 7. So i don't get why your disapointed in this movie but not in the others. HMMMM...

1/10. One of the worst films I've ever seen.
