Here's the report from the BBC:
Actor Richard Harris dies
Richard Harris had been expected to join the cast for the third Harry Potter film
Celebrated actor Richard Harris has died following a fight against cancer, a family spokesman has confirmed.
The Irish screen veteran, 72, had been undergoing chemotherapy for Hodgkin's disease, after falling ill two months ago.
His death was announced by sons Damian, Jarid and Jamie who said their "beloved father" had passed away peacefully at University College Hospital, London, at 1900 BST on Wednesday.
Harris, already a renowned actor, became known to a new generation of film fans through his role as Professor Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - the first movie based on JK Rowling's tales of the boy wizard.
He had just finished work on the second Harry Potter movie, Chamber of Secrets, when he became ill this summer.
Harris had expected to be discharged in time to work on the third Potter film, The Prisoner of Azkaban.
Hodgkin's disease - a form of cancer that affects the lymph glands - was diagnosed when Harris went into hospital with a severe chest infection in August.
Only a few weeks ago his agent, Sharon Thomas, told BBC News Online he was "responding well to treatment".
Harris built his reputation on his commanding performances in films such as A Man Called Horse and This Sporting Life.

This is a great tragedy and I will miss Mr. Harris, but we can still visit his vast array of wonderful performances. My thoughts go out to his family.

I found these quotes from Richard and had to share:
Personal quotes
"There are too many prima donnas in this business and not enough action."
"I'm not interested in reputation or immortality or things like that...I don't care what I'm remembered for. I don't care if I'm remembered. I don't care if I'm not remembered. I don't care why I'm remembered. I genuinely don't care." :-)
Got to love him...

Here are three statments over Richard's death.
First, here is what a WB exec has to say....
Barry Meyer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, and Alan Horn, President and Chief Operating Officer of Warner Bros., in a joint statement, "Warner Bros. extends our deep and heartfelt condolences to the family of Richard Harris, who has made so many unforgettable contributions to the world of motion pictures, most recently in the role of Professor Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter movies. We will miss his presence and will treasure our memories of him."
In addition to his work in the Harry Potter films, Harris, 72, starred in "Camelot" for Warner Bros. in 1972, winning a Golden Globe for his work, and also starred in Warner Bros.’ Academy Award-winning "Unforgiven" in 1992.
Second, this is what the CoS cast and crew had to say.....
The cast and crew of Chamber of Secrets made this statement: "Richard Harris was a remarkable actor and a generous and free spirit. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very sad time."
Third, this is what Columbus had to say....
Potter director Chris Columbus had this to say:
"We're all still in an incredible amount of shock. We knew Richard was sick but he was such a fighter that somehow deep down we all expected him to make it and get through it and be in the third Harry Potter film.
"So it's a complete shock because we've all worked so closely together. It's like losing a member of your family."

I saw this new yesterday night, and I was like this:
I'ts really a pity... Actually, Richard Harris was one of the gratest actor recently, and I was a big fan of him... Most of movies that he has been worked in, in my opinion, he was always my favorite character. =/ I became really sad... too bad...

I actually have Richard's autograph. I mailed him an 8x10 glossy photo about three months ago and he was really kind, I got a reply in three weeks. Great Guy and I was a big fan. His autograph is one of my most treasured items. To back up CrimsonRiver, Long Live Dumbledore and Long Live The Legacy of Richard Harris!

I haven't seen many of his movies, but from what I can tell he was not only a great actor, but also a great man.

Does anyone know if his cancer was brought about because of his hard drinking since his younger days?

I seem to remember hearing, or reading something, about him being in the hospital, but expecting to get out soon, as he was feeling better, and was quickly recovering. Its sad

I just finished watching a live presentation of the London premiere on the official site and at the very end David Heyman(producer) and Chris Columbus(director) came out on stage and dedicated the screening to Mr. Harris and said they had a great time working with him and told a few cool stories about him. I found it to be a very kind touch.

I deleted some posts in this thread because I just did not want a thread to pay respect to Mr. Harris becoming a thread for suggestions for who'll replace him as Dumbldedore. We have a thread now to do that. Please go there to talk about Dumbledore replacements.
