There really only are two baseball movies. Second place belongs to Field of Dreams. But first place easily belongs to The Natural.

Field of Dreams is my favorite, but hold a special place for League of Their Own and The Sandlot.

1) Field of Dreams (8/10)
2) A League of Their Own (7/10)
3) The Sandlot (7/10)
4) The Rookie (7/10)
5) Big Leaguer (6/10)
I've never seen The Natural, and I haven't seen The Sandlot in ages, so it may deserve to be higher. Big Leaguer is a very small, kinda cheesy little baseball movie from the late 50s that I'll bet my nuts nobody here has seen (it's only got less than 30 votes at the IMDb). It starred one of my favorites, Edward G. Robinson.

"Field of Dreams" - 9/10
What an amazing flick.
Lyrical, poetic...grand in it's unwavering sentimentality.
The whole movie is rather touching...
!!!!**** SPOILER ALERT****!!!!
...if the final scene, where Ray meets John, doesn't hit ya in the heart...man, you're not alive.
Costner: "I don't know what to say"
Madigan: "Why don't you introduce him to his family?"

Haven't seen *61 or The Natural yet either, so I gonna go with Field Of Dreams (1989, 10/10) and Major League (1989, 10/10) as the best.

My god, people!!!
If you have not seen The Natural yet, you must run out today! Great movie. As good or better than Field of Dreams. It gets my vote for first because Redford is ten times the actor that Costner is.

I really love Field of Dreams, but (not to sound too much like Buggin' Out from Do The Right Thing,) ...it would've been nice to see some Brothers come out from that corn. I'd hate to think Heaven is segregated, too.

Damn Yankees was really good. (The movie musical).
That would get my vote for best baseball movie but A League of Their Own gets points for that hilarious line: "THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!!!"
I haven't seen Bull Durham yet but I dislike baseball films that seem to worship the sport like it's some big deal.

I've thought about that as well...
I first thought that the players were only from Shoeless Joe's era, but, "Moonlight" Graham says: "That's Gil Hodges". Gil was a teammate of Jackie Robinson, who we all know broke the color barrier.
Add to that the fact that Terrance Mann was portrayed as someone who would be considered an ex-radical from the sixties. Mann was also at the fore of the Civil Rights movement. So, how in the hell does the fact that baseball was segregated for 60 years escape him? Don't you feel that given Mann's passion, he would've admonished the Game from that era...rather than give a poetic dissertation on the game?
Don't you think it would've been more realistic if Mann got off at least ONE rant about it?
I find it wierd that a black actor was cast as Mann...maybe the producers felt that doing that might help gloss over the segregation issue?
And greb, I've yet to see "The Natural"...though I agree with you that Redford is a better actor than Costner, I think Kevin shined most in "FOD's".
I Can't think of one reason as to why I've yet to see "The Natural"...but your recommendation has me piqued.

Even if it was just players from Jackson's era, that still leaves a lot of talent who never saw one pitch in the major leagues, for no good reason.
If they play ball in Heaven, I'd like to think Josh Gibson gets to bat against Carl Hubbell.

FOR LOVE OF THE GAME (8/10): Sam Raimi is my hero. In any other directors hands, this movie could be catastrophic. In Sam Raimi's hands, it was an amazing movie with a lot of heart.

The film is great. Life, love, baseball and William McNamara, what more could you want?!?! Ok, so maybe quite a lot more, but it is a great film for those that haven't seen it :D

I remember that, very vaguely. Tatum O'Neal was in that, wasn't she?
Anyhoo, my fave baseball movie is actually a tie between Major League and Field of Dreams.

I'd say Field of Dreams takes it. I used to like the Natural quite a bit when I was a kid, but watching it now it seems to have lost a lot. There are still some magical moments (the ending), but too many things in this movie leave me cold nowadays. Yeah Redford's a better actor, but that doesn't mean he was in the better film. Field of Dreams, however, hasn't lost a thing IMHO.
