What a diverse actor, he has been in many excellent films, some of which I don't even recognize him. You may gauge this thread in any way you deem fit, which movie did he offer his best performance, which was the best movie, or which is your favorite.

The Whole Wide World and Full Metal Jacket are his top films. I love Malcom X, also. It's a good thing to have on your resume.
Bob Goren is the second most fascinating Detective I've ever seen. He's just a hair behind Andre Braugher's Frank Pembleton from Homicide: Life on the Streets. It was on that show that Vince gave one of the best performances of his career as the doomed commuter caught between the subway train and the platform. The two-man scenes w/ him and Braugher were intense and compelling. HIGHLY recommended.
(I loved that scene last year on L&O: CI when Goren was playing along w/ the manic guy in the interrogation room, jumping around and yelling right along with him. They cut to the other side of the one-way mirror to his boss, Jamey Sheridan who looks at Eakes and says, with a pained, wry smile "Oh, great. It's The Goren Show again..." :D )

I loved the first half of Full Metal Jacket, but I think his finest role might have been as Pooh Bear in The Salton Sea. Damn near unrecognizable.

PERFORMANCES:
Bill in MYSTIC PIZZA, perhaps the first man to ever complain about a horny girlfriend.
Dawson in ADEVNTURES IN BABYSITTING, he didn't have to say a word. He IS a Norse god.
Starghar in THE CELL, he carried the weight of that FX heavy film.
FULL METAL JACKET, Pyle is his defining role for most (not me)
and... Goren, the Uber-genius man we love to be grilled by on CRIMINAL INTENT.

I never realized how many good films he's been in! My favorite is Full Metal Jacket for both film and performance. His small but memorable role in Ed Wood is another one that I really like.
Private Pyle - Evertime I lay eyes on this actor, that is the first character that comes to mind. Like Kubrick said to him, it's more important to be interesting than good. I can't even watch CSI because it's, well, Private Pyle.
Folks should also check out The Salton Sea, he does the most demented thing to pet pigeons I have ever seen.
Also, I'm not sure- but pretty sure- that there was a voice over on his performance of Orson Welles.
