Yes, this is becoming a fad with me, in case you are wondering....

1. Raiders Of The Lost Ark[1981, Steven Spielberg]

Spielberg's timeless epic adventure[but then again what Spielberg film isn't?] about archaelogist Indiana Jones that made the character and the great actor who played him, Harrison Ford, cemented into movie fame and history with this exciting classic.

2. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back[1980, Irvin Kershner]

http://www.sci-fi.ch/Movies/StarWars_v/poster.jpg

Wile the second installment may not have had George Lucas's name as director, Irvin Kershner still lives up to expectations of the new chapter. The film still contains breathtaking action sequences, great special effects, beloved characters, and one of the greatest scenes in movie history["Luke, i am your father".]

3. Glory[1989, Edward Zwick]

http://www.movieactors.com/wincovers/glory.jpeg

Glory[which was sadly overlooked in the main Oscar categories except for Denzel] is undoubtedly one of the greatest war films of all time. Denzel Washington's powerhouse Oscar winning performance carries the movie to an even higher extent, although the script, direction, and the rest of the cast contribute greatly as well.

4. When Harry Met Sally[1989, Rob Reiner]

http://www.homevideos.com/photosdates/harry.jpeg

Can friends of the opposite sex keep the friendship with sex ruining it? Just the kind of topic you would expect from Rob reiner, ex "Meathead" from TV's All In The Family. The actor turned director takes on such a brilliant romantic comedy in an equally brilliant way. The dialogue is superb, plot great, along with the pairing of Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.

5. Dangerous Liaisons[1988, Stephen Frears]

http://www.bcholmes.org/images/film/liaisons.jpg

The 1988 classic film, based on the popular novel, about manipulation, betrayal, and seduction. John Malkovich gives a great performance in the film and Glenn Close is equally manipulative and lethal. Also fantastic writing and stellar supporting performances.

6. The Shining[1980, Stanley Kubrick]

http://www.horrorcult.com/locandine/s/shining.jpg

Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece, based on Steven Kinf's horrifying novel, about the strange effects on a family staying in a mysterious hotel. Jack Nicholson is as frightening as he is convincing and Kubrick's terrifying camerawork and direction add even more to the psychological fear of the situation.

7. Do The Right Thing[1989, Spike Lee]

http://www.everettcollection.com/Poster/Pages/RX86BZYP.jpg

Spike Lee's, IMO, greatest film takes place in a negihborhood where bigotry, insecurities, and hatred seem to escalate at an uncomfortable level. The writing is fantastic and revealing and his "unique" direction adds to the experience.

8. Dead Poets Society[1989, Peter Weir]

http://www.lynchposters.com/images/Dead-Poet's-Society.jpg

A touching, memorable film about life, love, and acceptance. Robin Williams turns in an excellent perfromance, one of his few dramatic roles, as a teacher willing to teach his young students to "sezie the day". Excellent!

9. Sex, Lies and Videotape[1989, Steven Soderbergh]

http://www.lynchposters.com/images/Sex-Lies-and-Videotape.jpg

Before his "Traffic" and "Erin Brockovich" fame, director Steven Soderbegrh made this 1989 drama about sex, lies, and well, videotape[It's all in the title]. Not only do we get great performances from Andie McDowell and James Spader, we get some of the sexiest LINES in movie history.

10. Fatal Attraction[1987, Adrian Lyne]

[I didn't feel like putting a poster here]

Adrian Lyne made this breakout success film about sex, adultery, betrayal, and obsession. Glenn close is at one of her best as Forrest, an obsessive woman who will do anything to be "noticed" by Michael douglas's character. Dogulas also pulls in a great performance, and him and Close pull in a "great one' in one scene together[oh yeah baby!]
;) ;)

I like your list, movielover-9. When Harry Met Sally is the only one of those films that I hate. Do The Right Thing is the best IMO. Dangerous Liaisons is great, too, but Choderlos de Laclos's "Les Liaisons Dangereuses", written in 1782, is hardly a "popular novel."

I haven't seen Glory and can't remember anything about Fatal Attraction.

The 80's were kind of weal for movies, but still have some gems. I thought The Shining was overrated. We still have the Indiana Jones trilogy thanks to the 80's and Die Hard became the action film everyone refered when talking about an action movie. A few great comedies like Ghostbusters and Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Amadeus tops them all though.
