None of the above, Bernard Herrmann deserves the top spot.

I go with John Williams. There is not one score I heard from him that I didn't like.

Ditto, though of the listed above, Williams has to get it, though Zimmer's my fave of the bunch.

No Carter Burwell though?

Danny Elfman. He really makes the feel of movies come to life with his music.

2nd Best: James Horner (Best work: Braveheart)

I loved Zimmer's True Romance score

It was actually used in Badlands first, which came out around 20 years prior. Great score, though :)

I picked Howard Shore for his LOTR score, but I had a hard time picking between him and Hans Zimmer. John Williams is good as well.

The best on this list I'd say is John Williams...best ever? Probably Henry Mancini--not that anyone here knows who that is.

I had a little mouse-controversy with this poll. The mouse kept wanting to click John Williams, but I wanted James Newton Howard. And of course, the mouse won, John Williams has done sooo many wonderful scores, while J.N Howard hasn't done that many. But I love SIGNS though. Amazing score.

Thomas Newman

American Beauty, Little Women, "Six Feet Under" theme. 'Nuff said (and I hate the phrase "nuff said")!

Hmm. This is tough because I love Howard Shore's and John William's work. But for the amazing job on the LOTR soundtrack I go with Howard.

James Newton Howard: Had done some very creepy and scary scores like Signs, Dreamcatcher and The Sixth Sense. Some good action scores, for exemple Vertical Limit.

Hans Zimmer: Best action composer at the moment(Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, The Peacemaker). Can also make some very beautiful (The Lion King) and creepy (The Ring) music.

Then there is a new guy called Klaus Badelt. He has become one of my favorites. Has done also some great scores, like The Time Machine remake, Equilibrium, Basic and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of Black Pearl.
