View Full Version : Old school gamers: Favorite ARCADE Games

All right I'm making myself look old.:) I know video arcades are kind of a thing of the past, but anybody who remembers, what arcade games did you used to take a pocket full of quarters and play for hours?

My favorite was the original "Punch Out" game. This is before anybody even knew who Mike Tyson was. Same concept as Tyson's Punch Out, your still the little green guy fighting the huge monsters. It was much, much, harder than the Tyson version, and it only had six boxers that you recycled through, but awesome for the time!

Some other old school favorites include:

Pole Position
Frogger
Donkey Kong
Tapper (This game was the shit! You actually had a beer tap to dispense beer to thirsty bar patrons.:) If they made it to the end of the bar before you gave them a beer you lost.)

I love arcades. I went to them all the time when I was younger. I still play arcades every so often at the movie theatre but they're no longer just a quarter.

I remember playing the Punch-Out arcade game once. It was pretty cool.

Some of my favorites:

Contra
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Street Fighter 2

I also remember that Tapper game your talking about but I think I played it on my computer. It was fun but I remember it being damn hard.

I used to love that old skateboarding game, 720. I remember going to Disney world back in 1990, and the only damn thing I wanted to do was play that game in the arcade. I would twitch them knobs every chance I got... but enough about my woman :D

I later got it for the NES, but I don't recall it being quite as good. Hell, I may actually go and dig that fucker up...

MY favorite old skool arcade games are:

1.Double Dragon(Also one of the best games ever. Period.)

2.Forgotten Worlds(Came out on the genesis as well, but an awesome game nonetheless)

3.After Burner(who could forget the first time they got in that huge machine and to rolled and twisted as they played? Pure Bliss.)

4.Karate Champ(Remember the two guys, fighting on the log crossing a cliff?)

5.720 (the first and best skateboarding game)

6.Centipede(arguably one of the most fun games ever. Still fun as hell today.)

7.Galaga(I spent countless quarters on this one. Caught myself at a bowling alley recently, tossing dozens of quarters into this game.)

There are many other games, but these are my favorite throwbacks.

what about Pacland, where you pushed fire hydrants to get bonus items. Also loved Out Run, Shinobi, Bomb Jack, Rastan Saga, Forgotten Worlds, Kung Fu Master, Green Beret and I'm sure there was a cowboy version of this too. There's another one I can't remember the name of, you played a musician and you "fired" musical notes from your guitar at the baddies. The background music included Like A Virgin and Rock Me Amadeus so I'm talking late '80s game. I didn't dream this, does anyone else remember it?

My favorite by far was Gauntlet - I loved the 4 player games. For all you fans of old arcade games, you can build a MAME machine like these:

http://www.custom-arcade.com/daddypics.htm

which runs MAME and plays thousands of your old games:

http://www.classicgaming.com/mame32qa/

get all the games at http://www.mame.dk

I miss playing the old arcades so I thought this thread deserved a good bump. It's pretty hard to remember what games I was playing at WOW or Chucky Cheese fifteen years ago but these games stand out:

THE SIMPSONS ARCADE - Dammit was this game fun as hell!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Arcade Game
Marvel vs Capcom
Raiden 2
Golden Axe
The Avengers
Some Spiderman game. Can't remember the name of it. There is a long distance view in some sections and then it scrolls up for close up fighting in others. Venom is the main enemy. Anybody?

Probably some others that I'm forgetting but it's been a long time.

Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

They had a Galaga at the neighborhood pizzeria that shut down about a year ago. I miss that place soo much. Galaga was totally addictive. I also liked the Simpsons arcade game and the similar X-Men game.
