Film Handbook (Geoff Andrew). 1991- more recent concise version, Directors A-Z, 1998.

Flickers (Gilbert Adair) 1995

Time Out Film Guide

Radio Times Guide to Films

Film;The Critics' Choice (ed Geoff Andrew) 2001.

These are all excellent on World cinema generally.

For Hollywood (1969-80), Easy Riders, Raging Bulls (Peter Biskind) is an entertaining, informative read.

For some off the beaten path choices, seek out Danny Peary's Cult Movies volumes 1-3. Great books that have alerted me to many, many films that I would likely have missed otherwise.
