The biggest film, so far, of 2002 was released today on DVD in Widescreen and Fullscreen. What do you think? I just picked it up and I am going to watch it in a few minutes. I will post my review later.

Review: Spider-Man DVD

The Film: Director Sam Raimi made two films. One is about a nerdy teen who loves science and has a crush on a popular girl(who he is afraid to ask out). The second is about an epic battle between two superhumans with tons of great effects and remarkable action sequences. With Spider-Man he combined these and made a perfect film. Spider-Man is colorful. It has tons of amazing action scenes with huge baloons, explosives, people turning to dust, and more. It has innovative efffects and is a genius action film. Spider-Man also has a human core. Peter Parker, masterfully played by talented Maguire, is like you and me. He is nervous sometimes and is not a great hero right off the bat. Spider-Man is a film filled with comic ideals and will be a film you watch again and again.

Video- Very nice. The 1.85:1 aspect ratio is cool and the films colorful scenes are eye popping.

Audio- Great. Every bomb sounds amazing. This film has good sounds and this DVD makes 'em shine.

Special Features-

WONDERFUL! This DVD is jam packed with awesome features. It covers every nook and cranny of the film's masive production from actors to music to effects to hilarious gags. It also has a lot of stuff from Spider-Man artists and Stan Lee with their ideas on the comic book and Spider-Man himself. Kevin Smith is also heavily featured on this DVD. It is a geek's dream and a wonderful addition to any film library.

10/10!

Kevin Smith is featured on a 2nd DVD where he interviews Stan Lee. The character of Silent Bob is not actually in the film or any of the extras.

I just bought it Saturday night and watched it. I already saw it in the theaters. I was scanning the dvds last night before settling down to watch the movie. I thought they had prettty neat things on it. I didn't check everything out yet but will soon. Bought the widescreen version at Best Buy.

Whoo!

Picked this baby up at Sam's yesterday. Special Edition Fullscreen.

Never have I had this much fun watching a DVD. The picture is beautiful, the sound amazing ( and will be much better when Christmas and my surround sound system roll around ), all in all, the perfect DVD adventure.

If the movie wasn't enough, the special features should be. Packed with music videos, commentaries, interviews, TV Specials, anything you can ask for! I love it!

MOVIE: 9/10
DVD: 10/10

Just out of curiosity, did you mean WIDESCREEN, or do you just prefer FULLSCREEN?

I prefer widescreen, but I know some people seem to like fullscreen better.

Well, I bought the DVD and the video is disappointing. The picture is soft and grainy, with video noise all throughout the film. This DVD should look a lot better than this. Not a terrible transfer, but nowhere near reference. In fact, it's not even close.

This Is An Excellent DVD, And One That All Respectible Movie Fans Should Get, Even If It Is Just To Say That You Have It! I Purchased The Full Screen Version (For Some Reason I Find Blockbuster Movies To Be Better This Way) And It Is great!

The Movie:
This is an awesome movie. The special fx, story, acting, script, direction, score, and overall entertainment level are all very high. I had a blast watching this movie, though I do have some complaints.
Rating: **** / ***** (Great)
The Video
Perfect. Crystal Clear, and Beauitful.

Special Features
The special features here are very good. They give a pretty good look at the making of this film. Though there are many better dvds out there, this is still a very good package.

I picked up my Widescreen Spiderman SE DVD on Friday and have watched it twice, once with commentary and once with the factoid pop-ups.

I think it is a very good DVD, video and sound quality are about the best I've seen compared to other DVD's in my collection.

Kevin Smith is on the 2nd disk when you watch the special called Spiderman in the 21st Century. He is interviewed (along with The Man, JRSR and JRJR) as the "writer the of Black Cat". I guess "Filmmaker" slipped their minds.

I have searched but so far have not found any easter eggs. However, if you are the kinda guy who "Hulks out" his pants at the sight of Eliza Dushku like I do then watch Tobey Maguire's screen test. The brunette that Tobey "saves" in the back alley is none other than Faith herself. She was too far away to get a good look at her boobs but oh well. I'm also miffed that they digitally blacked out her face...I assume for legal reasons. :(

She has mentioned the screen test in interviews and stated she was hoping to land the part of Mary Jane but no such luck. Can you imagine what the wet T-shirt scene would have been like? Maybe one of the sequels will have Felicia Hardy and Eliza can put the cat-suit from J&SBSB back on. :P

The only other gripe I have about the DVD comes from the feature where you get to look at Spidey issues throughout the decades. There are many key issues not represented most notably issues directly related to the movie like #14 thru 17. The scans of the covers they do show is top notch however so maybe they can fill in the missing issues on the next DVD.

The picture and sound are far from perfect. I should have waited for the inevitable Superbits version.

I was just wondering, is the first theatrical trailer on the DVD? It's the one where Spiderman catches the bank robbers in between the Trade Center Towers.

I watched this DVD, and didn't think much of it. The bonus material was stagnant. Stan Lee is a rambling mess. (That, and he seems to have read a few dozen Superman comics before he made Spidey.) Anywho, I have a review from CNN/Entertainment Weekly. This review can also be found at CNN.com:

(Entertainment Weekly) -- When ''Spider-Man'' first hit theaters, it was such a relief to see that director Sam Raimi hadn't Screwed It Up -- i.e., messed too much with the Marvel Comics concept of a young schmo, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire), granted superpowers after a spider bite -- that it was easy to overlook the crucial flaw of the film.

Which is that Raimi's ''Spider-Man'' is about exactly what Maguire's opening speech says it is: ''a girl'' -- Kirsten Dunst's squeezably soft Mary Jane Watson. And as a pop love story, the movie's peachy-keen. As a battle with evil as personified by Willem Dafoe's hammy Green Goblin, however, it's an F/X-overloaded noisefest.

The two-disc DVD is full of goodies that turn out to be mediocrities: Marvel editor Stan Lee yakking about his own marvelousness; interviews with other Spidey-comic artists and writers who give short shrift to Steve Ditko, the artist who gave Spider-Man his distinctive look; a gag reel with no gags; unilluminating screen tests by Maguire and the scene-stealing J.K. Simmons (J. Jonah Jameson); the video of Sum 41's soundtrack irrelevance ''What We're All About.''

With great promises come great responsibilities: This ''special edition'' just doesn't swing.

Well, I hate to tell you but I most certainly did not get a defective version. The picture sure as hell isn't perfect, even if you can't see it. Go read any review on the internet and you will see they certainly don't call it perfect. Perfect would mean reference, and that's something this DVD surely is not. The video is disappointing on a film this new.

Peter Bracke of DVD File:

although there is some light grain permeating most of the runtime. Colors are fairly well saturated but not really eye-popping, especially the dull New York exteriors and non-action scenes. Fleshtones also veer towards the pinks far too often, which is annoying and adds to the artifical look. I also noticed a bit of noise, however slight, on the most highly-saturated hues, along with what looks to be "dot crawl" on larger close-ups of faces and solid backgrounds. Given all the extras crammed along with the feature on disc one, there is also some minor compression artifacting present, again mostly noticeable on solid backgrounds and long dissolves and fades.

Peter Bracke is respected and knowledgeable DVD reviewer. He's reviewed tons of DVDs. He knows his stuff. It's a pretty good transfer, but nowhere near what it should be. Certainly not even close to AOTC and FOTR:EE.

Picked this baby up at Sam's yesterday. Special Edition Fullscreen.

I Purchased The Full Screen Version

Are you guys serious? Good Lord I would have thought you guys would have learned about fullscreen and why it's bad, from being on here. Why would you buy a butchered version of the film that doesn't represent the director's intent? The fullscreen pan & scam cuts off a lot of the picture. Fullscreen never looks better than widescreen, no matter what the film, because it's missing half the picture.
