You guys aren't alone, I'm looking forward to this DVD like no other. I can't wait to watch the final dinner scene, I was breaking down during that part in the theater.

Looks like this DVD will have some kickass features too.

Dude! SIGNS fucking KICKS ASS! I saw it three times in the theatre. I took several family & friends to see it, too, and they loved it. The special features on this one look cool! And thanks for the cover, Pudge! I'm there on 1/7!!

I'll definitely pick this one up, too.
Word to the wise: From all the sites I've read, it appears M. Night's commentary will be on the Doc, not the film. Strange but true.

One minor complaint: The new artwork is kind of cheesy, with Gibson and Family. They should have kept the lone picture of the circle and added the Vista Series Logo.

Cool, I'm looking forward to it. But like bob said, they shoulda eliminated the family on the cover

I am very excited for this release. It was one of the best of 2002. The whole film was top-notch. Great acting. Great effects. Great writing. Great directing. You get the point. I also am pleased with the extensive extras. If this one is as cool as the newer Sixth Sense DVD, it'll rule. Plus I love the new artwork. Adding the family on is brilliant.

P.S. I am curious about the deleted scene The Dead Bird. SPOILERS Remember the scene after the pantry attack where all the birds take off loudly. It would've been cool if one smacked into an invisible spacecraft, and seen a POV from the sky as the bird drops. Maybe that is what this could be.

Um, having said that... I do have one question.... Is it two discs or just one?

Judging on past Vista Series my betting side would go for two but you never know.

and YES it IS ON 2 DISKS!! ( i think all vista series are and will always be on 2 disks)!

I'd assume it'd just be the scene Merryl described to Graham about the bird flying into the spaceship, but they'll actually show it! I hope thats what it is. The deleted scene I'm most looking forward to is "Aliens in the Attic"!

I'm trying to avoid reading the SPOILERS ;)... Anyway, I didn't see SIGNS in theaters but I've heard it's really good and scary (Horror Whore's recommendation got me even more excited about this one). I think I might just pre-order it for the hell of it and hope I love it. I just hope it's better than the OK but un-scary The Sixth Sense and the really disappointing UNBREAKABLE...

I didn't mind THE SIXTH SENSE, but the hype really brought it down and it just wasn't as GREAT as people were saying. And UNBREAKABLE was OK until the horrible ending, what a disappointment. I'm sure SIGNS will be better than both of them, and if it's not then fuck Shymalan, I'll definitely know not to expect much from him in the future.

SPOILERS

Horror Whore, that scene is where he's standing in front of the vent that goes into the basement. They turn thier flashlights on him and then it shows a shot of him front the front, right when the alien reaches through and grabs him. There were a lot of excellent camera shots in this film. It's hands down my favorite film of 2002 and quickily becoming my absolute favorite of all time. I saw it 3 times in the theater and when I buy it on dvd tuesday I plan on watching it everyday for quite awhile. Jan 7th cant get here quick enough. 5 more days!!!

I knew there was a reason I haven't spent all my christmas money! So I could buy this, naturally. Looks like a great disc, and it's a great film.

P.S. What's wrong with it being one disc? The original sixth sense disc was just one disc, but it was pretty packed.

P.P.S. My problem with the cover art is that the family is on it. I think it would be cooler to have just a sweet overhead shot of the cornfield.

P.P.P.S. According to www.dvdfile.com the aspect ratio is 1.78:1. Is that right? Cause I thought it was shot in scope.

This film was very popular. In the USA alone it made over 200 million. Most popular films get two versions: Widescreen and Fullscreen. This should be the same.

Anywho, Mike read this review from Ebert. It is the perfect review of "Signs". You can buy it right now without seeing it. Its an amazing experience. Read.....

SIGNS
**** (PG-13)

August 2, 2002

Father Graham Hess: Mel Gibson
Merrill Hess: Joaquin Phoenix
Morgan Hess: Rory Culkin
Bo Hess: Abigail Breslin
Officer Caroline Paski: Cherry Jones
Colleen Hess: Patricia Kalember
Radio Host: Jose L. Rodriguez
Buena Vista Pictures presents a film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Running time: 120 minutes. Rated PG-13 (for some frightening moments).

BY ROGER EBERT
M. Night Shyamalan's "Signs" is the work of a born filmmaker, able to summon apprehension out of thin air. When it is over, we think not how little has been decided, but how much has been experienced. Here is a movie in which the plot is the rhythm section, not the melody. A movie that stays free of labored explanations and a forced climax, and is about fear in the wind, in the trees, in a dog's bark, in a little girl's reluctance to drink the water. In signs.

The posters show crop circles, those huge geometric shapes in fields of corn and wheat, which were seen all over the world in the 1970s. Their origin was explained in 1991 when several hoaxers came forward and demonstrated how they made them; it was not difficult, they said. Like many supernatural events, however, crop circles live on after their unmasking, and most people today have forgotten, or never knew, that they were explained. "Signs" uses them to evoke the possibility that ... well, the possibility of anything.

The genius of the film, you see, is that it isn't really about crop circles, or the possibility that aliens created them as navigational aids. I will not even say whether aliens appear in the movie, because whether they do or not is beside the point. The purpose of the film is to evoke pure emotion through the use of skilled acting and direction, and particularly through the soundtrack. It is not just what we hear that is frightening. It is the way Shyamalan has us listening intensely when there is nothing to be heard. I cannot think of a movie where silence is scarier, and inaction is more disturbing.

Mel Gibson stars as Father Graham Hess, who lives on a farm in Bucks County, Pa. We discover he is a priest only belatedly, when someone calls him "Father." "It's not 'Father' anymore," he says. Since he has two children, it takes us a beat to compute that he must be Episcopalian. Not that it matters, because he has lost his faith. The reason for that is revealed midway in the film, a personal tragedy I will not reveal.

Hess lives on the farm with his brother Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix) and his children Morgan and Bo (Rory Culkin and Abigail Breslin). There is an old-fashioned farmhouse and barn, and wide cornfields, and from the very first shot there seems to be something ... out there, or up there, or in there. Hess lives with anxiety gnawing at him. The wind sounds strange. Dogs bark at nothing. There is something wrong. The crop circles do not explain the feelings so much as add to them. He catches a glimpse of something in a corn field. Something wrong.

The movie uses TV news broadcasts to report on events around the world, but they're not the handy CNN capsules that supply just what the plot requires. The voices of the anchors reveal confusion and fear. A video taken at a birthday party shows a glimpse of the most alarming thing. "The history of the world's future is on TV right now," Morgan says.

In a time when Hollywood mistakes volume for action, Shyamalan makes quiet films. In a time when incessant action is a style, he persuades us to play close attention to the smallest nuances. In "The Sixth Sense" (1999) he made a ghost story that until the very end seemed only to be a personal drama--although there was something there, some buried hint, that made us feel all was not as it seemed. In "Unbreakable" (2000) he created a psychological duel between two men, and it was convincing even though we later discovered its surprising underlying nature, and all was redefined.

In "Signs," he does what Hitchcock said he liked to do, and plays the audience like a piano. There is as little plot as possible, and as much time and depth for the characters as he can create, all surrounded by ominous dread. The possibility of aliens is the catalyst for fear, but this family needs none, because it has already suffered a great blow.

Instead of flashy special effects, Shyamalan creates his world out of everyday objects. A baby monitor that picks up inexplicable sounds. Bo's habit of leaving unfinished glasses of water everywhere. Morgan's bright idea that caps made out of aluminum foil will protect their brains from alien waves. Hess' use of a shiny kitchen knife, not as a weapon, but as a mirror. The worst attack in the film is Morgan's asthma attack, and his father tries to talk him through it, in a scene that sets the entire movie aside and is only about itself.

At the end of the film, I had to smile, recognizing how Shyamalan has essentially ditched a payoff. He knows, as we all sense, that payoffs have grown boring. The mechanical resolution of a movie's problems is something we sit through at the end, but it's the setup and the buildup that keep our attention. "Signs" is all buildup. It's still building when it's over.

It was okay on it's own but it's a good thing it wasn't included in the film. It seemed strangely out of pace with the rest. A bit too odd and "actionny".

The movie was good but the extras weren't impressive.

Horror Whore, didn't you pre-order your copy from Deep Discount DVD? I assumed you would since you usually do, plus I know how much you can't wait to get this DVD.

I suppose I should go to the video store right away on Tuesday or I will never get it in Widescreen. Usually my video store will get around 2-3 copies of a movie in Widescreen and 10-11 in Fullscreen, depending on how popular the movie is. Wait, is SIGNS only available in Widescreen? If so, then I have absolutely nothing to worry about.

the deleted scene is called ALIEN IN THE ATTIC and THE THIRD STORY

SPOILERS i guess

and it is about there is an alien in the attic, and it is trying to come down, so Joaquin holds up the door for like 30 seconds saying it is a temp solution, than Gibson moves a big book shelf over to the attic entrance so that the door cant swing all thew way down n the alien cant get out.

than gibson says they should go in the basement while jaoquin says tha they should all run from the house... so gibson tells a story about how when they were kids jaoquin had broke his arm and he was crying and gibson told him to go to the hospital i guess, and he did, (even tho he didnt want to i guess) and than he had his arm fixed up and he went over to gibson and hugged him... and he told that story to show that he knew (gibson knew) what he was talking about, n that they should all get in the basement... all the while the aliens r trying to escape from the attic n doorway n everything!!

hope that wasnt too crappy of an explanation

the deleted scene runs a lil over 5 minutes

Big Pudge
01-05-2003, 01:25 AM
the DEAD BIRD deleted scene is just them all driving away from their house, and the camera pans down to the ground and we see a dead bird!

runs 21 seconds long

the GRAHAM AND MERRIL Deleted scene is gibson telling jaoquin that he appreciates his help, ,and jaoquin asking what could have made the "signs" in their crops, and gibson saying that his deceased wife could have figured it out, because she always knew the ending to movies!

runs 1:05 long

FLASHBACKS SCENE 1is just a shot of gibsons deceased wife sitting in a rocking chair holding one of their babies

runs 23 seconds long

FLASHBACKS SCENE 2 is just a scene of gibson and his wife dancing in their kitchen, than gibosn wakes up, and there is sum audio that jaoquin speaks to him, but there is absolutely no sound in this deleted scene, so it is just his lips moving w/ no words!

runs 36 seconds long

and thus concludes the DELETED SCENE portion of SIGNS!

Yeah I got a copy early as well. I ordered it of the net on a European site and every time I buy a R1 DVD they are always early.

I thought the extras weren't that good and the menu screens are pretty lazy and generic. But what a movie. Still brilliant, I've watched it nearly every day since.

I did find the extra Night's First Alien Movie...or something like that interesting...if a little short. Shows that anything is possible and we all have to start somewhere.

The DVD reaks of 2 Disc release Special Edition in about six months time.

extras= eh... not even an M. Night intro to the deleted scenes... i always enjoyed him talking aboiut how hard it was to decide what to cut n what to keep!!

sorry to burst your collective bubbles but the extras, except for the "making Signs" documentary which is excellent, are very, very average. The "dead birds" deleted scenes was a great, great disappointment.

I would have to agree that the extras basically suck. There are not even cast and crew bios included. For a Vista Series DVD, it's pretty plain Jane. If it wasn't such a kick ASS movie, I'd be REALLY pissed.

Oh, well, what are ya gonna do about it.

This is one of the worst DVD presentations of a hit movie I have seen. The extras are not even close to being worth of the "Vista Series" title. The sound is okay. The picture... well, lets just say my 'Cannibal! The Musical' picture is better! I was highly disapointed. The DVD acted like it was switching layers several times causing that familiar skip between chapters that should only happen once, but... on this DVD it happened several times. Overall... I weep for myself and all other fans who are stuck with this lackluster disc containing a spectacular film.

i just got this dvd today and am a little dissapointed. the casing is definetly not what i was expecting from a vista series case. the special features, while entertaining (especially the atic scene. "this is only a temporary solution") were lacking. i am very happy with the purchase though. i read online about the original ending for signs also. i thought some of you might be interested in it:

"Originally, I wanted the movie to end with Mel Gibson's character finding his faith and then pulling up to a horrible car accident where a teenage girl is dying. He gives her last rites and whispers, 'Don't be afraid because you're not alone.' It was a great ending with real power, but I worried that some would think I was pandering to our basic emotions. And the last thing I thought a lady who works 14 hours a day needed to see on a Saturday night was a teen dying on a street."

I had almost forgotten just how good this movie is. I have watched it twice already, I never watch a movie two times in one day...but it was just too god damn good.

Great movie. I loved the movie in the theaters. And i still love it on dvd. the behind the scenes were fun and the deleted scenes were entertaining.

M. Night Shyamalan is a great director IMO

I can't see why basic releases of hit films can't include subtitles. I mean, it really takes up almost NO disc space, and it can be the single aspect of the disc that causes some people not to buy it.

i see your point, and you're right, since a great deal of people in the states are from diferent parts of the world.
i have no problem trying to understand the lenguage, but i like to watch these movies with my friends, who most of them are not english speaking, im not saying that all dvds should have subtitles, but at least those who became a blockbusters should have at least 3 kind of subtitles (or audio).
and like you said, does'n takes much disc space or more money to invest in that, and will cover a great deal of market.

This was one of my fav movies of the year.

I'm just a tad sad with the DVD. Vista Series should've put more into it. A huge dissapointment but the movie still rocks.
