"Spider-Man" has extended its superpowers to video stores.

The year's top-grossing movie, which shattered box office records last spring with a $114.8 million opening weekend, set another record Friday with 7 million DVD and videotape copies sold in its first day of video release, distributor Sony said Sunday.

The previous record was 5 million copies of "Monsters, Inc.," sold on its first day in September.

Sony estimated that "Spider-Man" sold 11 million copies during the whole weekend. The studio shipped 26 million copies "so we're already 40 percent sold off, and we have seven weeks till Christmas," said Benjamin Feingold, president of Sony's Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment unit.

A sequel is due out in 2004.

At theaters, "Spider-Man" took in $405.7 million domestically, for the first time bumping a "Star Wars" film out of the top box office spot for the year. "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones," which grossed $303.6 million, hits video Nov. 12.

got that from IWON.com!!

well congrats!! but does any1 think star wars will beat it out?

What exactly is the point of this thread? I believe this year has 2 months left, so to say that "SPIDER-MAN" is the top film of the year is pretty ballsy. HARRY POTTER and LOTR:TTT have yet to be released, so don't count your chickens before they hatch. "S-M" will probably end up taking the DVD crown. "EPISODE II" is being released on a Tuesday along with "LOTR:FOTR SE", the first season of "South Park" as well as several other movies. I doubt that "SW" will break any DVD records, but if they can make as good of a DVD as they did with "EPISODE I" then I won't complain. Sony can take all the short cuts they want to make more money. I'm not a movie producer, so I could give a rip about which movie makes what money. All I care about is the movie itself. I got sucked into the spider hype last May and got burned bad...I just didn't think the film was all that good. I passed on the exclusive Friday release, and don't plan on watching the movie ever again even if it's on network TV. And the movie business can keep making up new categories for movies to break records in like "biggest opening weekend for a movie in the last week of 'August'" and crap like that. Everybody seems to forget that movie ticket prices (at least in my neck of the woods) has gone up $1 in the past year. I will seriously start cutting down on which movies I go to see. Likewise, I will probably start renting a lot more movies before I make the decision to buy them. Sorry to break the news to you, but not everyone that went to see "SPIDER-MAN" didn't love the film like some people did. I know a lot of people who felt that they got let down like I did, but you'll never hear that as long as Sony wants to add a few more bucks.

i personaly thing that while spiderman is a better movie monsters inc beat it out on the dvds it took me forever to go through that thing. spiderman just didnt match up to it but i dont think any film that didnt take 5 years to make could match up to it.

I can't say I'm surprised, tell me Pudge which is selling better the DVD or the Collector's Gifset? If you know that'd be cool.

Not that I really care one way or another, but this seems to happen a lot lately. I get sick of movie makers building up this massive hype when their films hit the video store shelves. DVD is really where more films are going to make their money though. While I am not as passionately against SPIDERMAN as Bobajoe is, I certainly am tired of seeing and hearing about it. I rented it over the weekend to show my wife, who rarely goes to movies. (She didn't think much of it, either.) The special features weren't nearly as cool as MONSTERS, INC. (Good, point, Pootie) and the film wasn't any better for me the second time around. In fact, I was bored senseless about 2/3 through it. It is nice that the film broke some records, but then again records are meant to be broken. As far as being the biggest film of the year, I think that LOTR and HARRY POTTER still have a golden opportunity, even with the short amounts of time both have in 2002 to make money. And I'd say that both could eventually surpass SPIDERMAN in DVD sales. I wouldn't be surprised if STAR WARS breaks a DVD record, be it sales or rental. It all depends on the trends fans follow.

The record won't last for long, they always fall within a couple of months. I can't see Star Wars beating it though...

I'm not sure why you got all defensive Pudge. Joblo forum rules specifically dictate that you not have any negative or vulgar comments directed to any other members of the forum. I'm not here to make friends. I have an opinion just like everyone else in here does, although mine seems to be in the minority. You loved the movie and that's fine. I hated it, so why can't you just accept that? I know quite a few people who didn't like the movie either.
After years and YEARS of waiting for this movie to come out, I was disappointed with the end result. It should have been called "Peter Parker", because he was in it a lot more than "Spider-Man" was. I realize that the movie tried to stick to the original comic as much as possible, I just don't ever remember the comic putting me to sleep like that. I totally agree with Nate6 and Jeo4, the record will definately not last very long.
I'm just sick and tired of all the hoopla and needless to say, I'll be passing on the sequel in 2004.

Ah, yes Spidey will be the highest grossing film of the year. Harry Potter and TTT will make a lot of coin, but they won't make anywhere near 400 million. The original films in each of those franchises made just over 300 million. Do you honestly expect the sequels to make 100 million more than the originals made? It's not going to happen. In fact, both films will probably make a bit less then their predecessors did.

So yes, I think we can claim Spidey as the highest grossing film of the year.

As for the DVD sales, are we sure that all of that is DVD sales. From what I've read it consists of DVD and VHS sales.

With the ever-growing DVD market, I think that these records won't last very long. Sure, Spiderman is NOW nš1, but it won't be forever....

I went to see it, I enjoyed it, but I just wasn't that overwhelmed by it. It's... entertaining.... Nevertheless, I'll buy the DVD, and also LOTR: FOTR- Extended version and AOTC.

Is Spiderman going to be the highest grossing film of the year? Yes, I think it will be. Of course, with the upcoming release of Harry Potter 2 and TTT, maybe something will change... maybe...

But I think that Harry Potter will make less money, and TTT the same or more.

Calm down boys... calm down... I believe this thread can lead to some interesting discussion so I would hate to have to close it give you kids a spanking (unless you happen to be a group of hot n' horny sorority beauty queens)

Well, I'm not a hot n' horny sorority queen, but I can put on a dress, and pretend to be one. ;)

Oh, and, no, the SW DVD will NOT sell more than Spidey. No way. SW is coming out with too many other DVD's to do that. I know that, personally, me and many, many others are going to be purchasing the FotR: EE DVD, instead of AotC (although I will pick up the SE of AotC). I actually think that the FotR: EE will sell alot of copies, as a TON of the fanbase decided to skip the original release, and just go for the extended one. But, well find out, soon enough.

I don't thing AOTC will break any one day records or anything like that, but it will sell well none the less. I think the super edition of LOTR will do better. Because of the other forums I have been to, almost 90% of them are getting LOTR EE. You would be suprised how many people don't like Star Wars.
As for me, I will be buying both on Tuesday!!

I said it before and i'll say it again,SM didn't deserve all the money it made.It was a lazy ripoff of the Batman(especially), and Superman films.

Maguire was miscast(very little depth, even in a comic book world),Dunst could have been replaced by any hot young Hollywood thing and it wouldn't have made a difference in the least, Franco was non descript( almost non existent is more accurate), Dafoe did his best Joker imitation( a poor one at that), the fx looked somewhat decent the first time around in that i'm watching a videogame on the big screen sort of way( they certainly don't hold up upon repeated viewings), the story is cliched, there is not one likable character( not that you need likeable characters to make an effective film, but they were trying to make everyone likeable and it still didn't work, and ultimately the entire time i was watching this slightly above average effort i had this deja vu feeling, even the music sounded earily familiar.

I'm just glad i didn't do a Lemming and buy this nonsense( i bought the first Batman instead, a far superior film), like a number of people are doing.Hey it made a Quillion dollars, it must be good, i have to get the DVD.

Let me save you some money by telling you not only does the film underwhelm, but the DVD is pretty much a joke.Filled to the brim with cheesy, uninteresting extras( the wardrobe screen test with no audio was the most peculiar), an unforgivable decision to only include a Dolby Digital sound mix( where's the DTS ES mix Sony), that i think is only the standard DD 5.1 mix, not the emerging DD 6.1 EX standard, a sleep inducing commentary track by Raimi and members of the cast( listen to any J Carpenter commentary, they are all informative and entertaining regardless if the movie sucked. I can see why Raimi claims to dislike commentaries, so i've heard, he's not that good at them), muted color saturation(this is a film that made 400 mil stateside, i thought they would have done a more effective digitization of the original negative), and various other nonsense they threw together( i'm convinced they actually did throw some of these extras together) in what seems like an attempt to justify utilizing a two disc set( after all, this way we can have S Man on one disc face and Joker,oh i mean Goblin on the other, how nice).

If you haven't yet made up your mind as to purchasing this film, do yourself a favor and rent it first. I'm almost positive that once the first wave of i gotta have every poular film people suck this one up, it's sales should drop. Then again, Christmas is coming, so who knows.

Bring on a real film, an original epic fantasy(you know which one i'm talking), not this pretender.

i will agree w/ one point of your essay, and that is the rip-off of Batman.... when the goblin makes him choose between MJ and the thingy full of kids over the ocean... that was exactly the same as when the riddler made batman choose between Robin and Nicole Kidmans character!
