Alright, I know heavy metal isin't exactly the most popular kind of music around (but that's a good thing cuz I'd hate to see what would happen if MTV got a hold of it) so i probably won't get to many replies.
So, who here is actually a heavy metal fan and what are the bands that you listen to the most?
Here's what's been playing in my CD player lately:
Cannibal Corpse- The Bleeding (1994)
Acid Bath- When The Kite String Pops (1994)
Dimmu Borgir- Enthrone Darkness Triumphant (1997)
In Flames- Clayman (2000)
Rammstein- Mutter (2001)
and
Cradle Of Filth- Lovecraft and Witch Hearts (2002)
So what do you think, and what's in your ears at the time?

They only put out one self titled album, but they've had another one tentatively titled The Good, The Bad, and the Butchered written for several years now; they just haven't gotten around to finishing it up and releasing it.

I like all types of heavy metal exept Black Metal. Some I like are Acid Bath(and Agents of Oblivion), Clutch (more of a rock band than metal), Paw (see Clutch), The Melvins, The Gathering, Sepultura, Voivod, Motorhead, Helmet (hardcore tinged), Black Sabbath, Type O Negative, older Fear Factory, The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, My Dying Bride, Kmfdm (if Rammstein is metal; so it KMFDM), Candiria, The Cult (really just a good loud rock band though), Faith No More (one of my all time favorite bands but once again, I don't really think they're metal), and Dillinger Escape Plan.
Right now I've been listening to Acid Bath-Pagan Terrorism Tactics, Voivod-Nothingface, and Helmet-Meantime. But it changes daily and metal is by no means the only genre I listen to...

So, bloodfeaster, I have a question. I've noticed that your 'metal' tastes kind of favor black and doom metal w/ a few classic metal bands thrown in. Tell me, where do you draw the line between heavy metal and rock and roll? See, I would definitely say that Queens of the Stone Age are a 'stoner rock' band, as are Clutch. But alot of people classify them in metal. In my interpretation of the term, I don't really like that much 'Metal', but in alot of other people's opinions, the majority of bands I listen to are indeed metal. So what classifies someone as metal, in your book?
Could I SAY the word metal anymore? Sheesh! Sorry about that.

Yeah, I don't consider QotSA or Clutch metal either (although Clutch is perhaps a little closer to being metal at times); I just always keep a list of what I'm listening to and post it to a listserv I'm on anyway and I didn't really feel like editing non-metal things out of it when the vast majority of things in the list are metal anyway.
As for what does constitute metal in my opinion can be a bit complicated. It is a combination of both aesthetic and deeper artistic elements of the music. Aesthetically speaking it is music that is derived from the foundations set by the pioneers like Black Sabbath. Many other non-metal bands may have influence from Black Sabbath but lack the aspects that make it metal, whereas all metal contains a few core characteristics. I know what I'm talking about in my head in the form of sounds and such, but unfortunately my lack of technical knowledge concerning music theory prevents me from being able to express it in words. I have to rely on "I know it when I hear it," which I admit is a very insufficient explanation but it's all I can really offer up unless I sometime take classes in music theory in the future to learn the actual terminology for what I am hearing.

I just got back from a Soulfly concert. Though their albums are not anything special by any means, their live performance is stunning. It's good to see Max Cavalera still has all that energy! However, alot of Soulfly fans are dicks. There was an local Emo band playing as a substitute for a band that cancelled at the last minute, and they got no respect whatsoever (though they were playing in the wrong crowd). People were throwing shit at them and they eventually got booed off stage. I was never so embarassed to be a Soulfly fan in my life. Have some fucking respect people, these guys were doing their best.
Sorry about that rant but I had to get that out...

I'll definitely try it out. Have you ever heard John West? He and Chris Caffrey did a cover of Iron Maiden's Run to the Hills that's pretty wild on the 666 tribute albums. It does the rounds on Kazaa quite a bit ;)
As for Oliva, I love his Trans-Siberian Orchestra stuff. A friend bought the video-movie they did and got me hooked.

You're right, I have not been to very many, but I was still shocked at the indecency that these people showed towards that band...
