I know, I'm very surprised too. The fact that it was released on a Wednesday with such little promotion and mixed (at best) reviews and still managed #7 and the fourth-highest per-screen average in the top 10 says that it could do better this weekend than some think...not great, but better.

What can I say other than sex sells and the television ads have used the sex appeal of Stamos dancing around in skimpy clothing to their advantage. Plus, the film is actually pretty good (It's one of my top five of the year so far) and critics such as Salon.com and Roger Ebert have also liked it.

I predicted 36 Million for 8 MILE and for some reason I feel like that's too little, I have a feeling this movie is going to have a HUGE opening weekend. For one, it's attracting many people, not just fans of his and not just one age group. The trailers were very good, the reviews are very good (my local paper gave it **** of ****), there's so many different people that want to see this movie, regardless of sex or race. This movie is going to do very well this weekend and I just can't help but feel that my 36 Million prediction is too little. I know any less than 36 Million would be a disappointment. I'm definitely not going to rule out a 40 Million weekend.

I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE FRIDAY'S NUMBERS!!!

The Ring should finish with about 135 million, I s'pose. That is a wonderful gross for a medium-size horror film with no huge starpower. I am sure Dreamworks is quite happy. And Warner Bros. does not need to be sad about Femme Fatale, they'll have a blockbuster next weekend.

I'm not surprised 8 MILE did as well as it did. It's ALL over the place. Where I live, if you turn on the popular local radio station they are having an 8 MILE weekend where they are giving away free tickets and playing Eminem songs all weekend long.

WOW!

8 Mile's opening day numbers are astounding to say the least!

I saw it yesterday at a 12:45 PM matinee and there were probably about 50 people there in a theatre that holds about 300+ people. Not bad at all for a Friday matinee.

What I find amazing is the fact that 8 Mile is only playing in a little over 2400 cinemas. Nearly every film with a blockbuster opening like this debuts in at least 3000+ theatres. 8 Mile's per screen average is going to be very hot!

ON a side note I must say that The Ring is holding up extremely well. Its in its 4th weekend and looks to gross yet again, more than it did in its debut weekend! Along with My Big Fat Greek Wedding, The Ring is the years second true sleeper hit.

Warner Bros. only paid eight million for the rights to Femme Fatale because the film was privately funded by investors like Mulholland Dr. It's not a big loss to them when it will do pretty well on video.

I'll be seeing it tonight, I'm looking forward to it as well. I'm going to see it with my brother who doesn't like rap music and he doesn't like Eminem, he likes country music (I don't). He doesn't even know what we are going to see, I just tell him what we are seeing and he goes. He asked me what it was called and I said 8 Mile, he told me he wants to see the new James Bond movie but I told him it's not out for two weeks. So we'll be seeing 8 Mile tonight.

THE SANTA CLAUSE 2 and THE RING held up very nicely, even I SPY and JACKASS didn't drop that much. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING actually made more than it did last weekend and I think it's heading for a total of 220 Million, possibly more, I think it will be a popular choice for the holiday season... FEMME FATALE debuted close to my 2.9 Million prediction and 8 MILE blew past my prediction of 36 Million. Overall I'm pretty satisfied with this weekends numbers, especially since THE RING keeps holding up so well...

Mike

By the way, both THE RING and probably 8 MILE will make it to 100 Million next weekend...

If the estimates are right and 8 Mile makes 54.46 Million this weekend, I figure it should be able to make about 12 Million during the week, and then if it can make at least 33.6 Million next weekend its total will be at 100.06 Million... And THE RING is certain to cross the 100 Million mark next weekend.

According to www.leesmovieinfo.com, 8 Mile actually saw a decrease in numbers on Saturday...which leads me to think that it'll drop-off between 45-55% this coming weekend. It does not surprise me though as the core audience for the flick would obviously show up its first weekend to see it.

It'll probably top off with about $150 million.

In other news, Frida and Bowling For Columbine are still kicking ass in LImited Release and having much success in their expansions from week to week.

Actually, movies that appeal heavily to a younger audience usually do decrease on Saturday's because a lot of teens go to the movies on Friday night, and Saturday is a big day for adults and families. Jackass decreased on its second day too but since then has been holding up surprisingly well. I still see 8 Mile dropping around only 40% next weekend due to very good word of mouth and GREAT reviews...

FAR FROM HEAVEN also did GREAT at the Box Office this weekend... This is from www.hollywood.com :

This weekend also saw the arrival of Focus Features' PG-13 rated drama Far From Heaven to a very promising ESTIMATED $0.21 million at 6 theaters ($34,500 per theater).

Directed by Todd Haynes, it stars Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid and Dennis Haysbert. "It's really huge," Focus distribution president Jack Foley said Sunday morning. "I've (looked at) the biggest (limited release) openings that have happened since August -- Punch-Drunk Love, One Hour Photo, Frida, The Good Girl, Igby Goes Down, Bowling For Columbine-- and it ranks number five among them. Those have been big openings. Punch-Drunk Love, had a $76,000 print average. One Hour Photo, was $45,000. Frida was $41,000. Good Girl was $37,000. We're sitting with a $34,500 print average. Based on how sophisticated this film is, it'd be wonderful if we can do the same business as these other films. I don't put it in the same category as Punch-Drunk Love or One Hour because (they had superstars like Adam Sandler and Robin Williams), but my God this is huge!"

Asked about expansion plans, Foley said, "We're going to be going into 13 markets next weekend. They'll be the top markets (like) Boston, Washington, Philadelphia, Chicago, etc. The runs will be varying from limited multiples -- for instance, in San Francisco we'll be in about six theaters, where the film should be explosive -- to exclusive runs, for instance, in Atlanta, Denver, Phoenix and Portland. We should be on 37 or 38 screens next weekend. The reviews have been perfect because they've really delved into how wonderful a film it is and how well it's (been) made, as well as the entertainment value.

"It uses the language of film in an exciting and a sort of revitalized way. You've never seen anything like this before. It's so amazing. It's such a sophisticated movie."

I just noticed that Far From Heaven was rated PG-13, I was thinking it was rated R, I guess that's another thing it has going for it, at least box office wise anyway...

It means very good things. I was quite surprised, based on the subject matter, that it wasn't R. Sounded like an Ice Storm-possible American Beauty-type of film, and they were both R.

Damn, the estimates were quite off of the actuals for 8 Mile. But that's nothing compared to how off the estimates were for Attack Of The Clones.

Tell me about it. I finally got to check it out at my theater, and I give it a 7/10, very amusing but slightly draggy and chickish, I'm not quite sure why its gross is exploding so much.

Well, I haven't seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding yet but I'm happy it's doing so well. Look at it this way, how many BIG movies make tons of money that don't deserve it? Quite a few I'd say. At least this little indie is kicking the ass of some of the BIG summer event movies and showing those damn BIG studios what they passed up on. I love to see little movies succeed, and this movie has certainly done that. I've been rooting for it the whole time and I hope it keeps bringing in the green. It should finish with AT LEAST 220 Million, but possibly even more since it should bring in some very good business this holiday season. Plus the Best Picture nomination talk doesn't hurt at all either, they were already talking about some Oscar nominations for it this last summer, before it even made it to 100 Million. I'm really glad it's such a big hit.

7/10 here too, Nate. It's enjoyable fluff, but I don't understand the "word-of-mouth" that has propelled this flick to $200 million at the US box office.
