Atkinson won a Pulitzer Prize during his time as a journalist and editor at the Washington Post and is the author of The Long Gray Line: The American Journey of West Point's Class of 1966 and of Crusade: The Untold Story of the Persian Gulf War. In contrast to Crusade's illustrations of technomastery, this book depicts the U.S. Army's introduction to modern war. The Tunisian campaign, Atkinson shows, was undertaken by an American army lacking in training and experience alongside a British army whose primary experience had been of defeat. Green units panicked, abandoning wounded and weapons. Clashes between and within the Allies seemed at times to overshadow the battles with the Axis. Atkinson's most telling example is the relationship of II Corps commander George Patton and his subordinate, 1st Armored Division's Orlando Ward. The latter was a decent person and capable enough commander, but he lacked the final spark of ruthlessness that takes a division forward in the face of heavy casualties and high obstacles. With Dwight Eisenhower's approval, Patton fired him. The result was what Josef Goebbels called a "second Stalingrad"; after Tunisia, the tide of war rolled one way: toward Berlin. Atkinson's visceral sympathies lie with Ward; his subtext from earlier books remains unaltered: in war, they send for the hard men. Despite diction that occasionally lapses into the melodramatic, general readers and specialists alike will find worthwhile fare in this intellectually convincing and emotionally compelling narrative.

Yeah, over halfway through this beast. It's hilarious and entertaining. None of the characters seem unnecessary even though some sections are a bit rambling. This is an epic read, so far so good. A friend of mine described it as Catch-22 on acid. He also said it loses steam in the last hundred or so pages, but like I said it hasn't so far.

I'm rereading this. It's been a few years. It's a fantastic book that's very well written by Hunter S. Thompson's partner in crime Dr. Gonzo (Oscar Acosta). The man was brilliant, but also crazy, and he makes no attempt to hide that in the book. It's a very honest biography in the vein of Charles Mingus' autobiography, Beneath the Underdog. It's a very great book if you're interested in the Chicano Rights movement of the late 60's and Acosta's involvement as a civil rights lawyer and activist.

The Road, by Cormac McCarthy
Just got it from the library today. I have a feeling that it's going to be a fast read; not only is the print somewhat large, the writing style itself moves very quickly.
But just because it's a fast read doesn't mean it's a good one - I hope it is, though.

I'm over 300 pages through with only 200 to go (gotta love that large paperback font)! I'm really liking it so far. I was first a little offset at how quickly these characters were moving without my knowing much about them, but Smith has been expertly developing these characters a bit at a time, allowing the reader to slowly get a grasp as to their characteristics and motivations the more events go downhill.

For whatever reason I cannot get into "The Road" as well. I suppose I prefer movies with long, flowing sentences instead over the short, stabby variety. That, and I get the sense that McCarthy is reaching for profundity with every paragraph and that does get tiring. I realize the story is simple--boy and man wandering about in a post-apocalyptic land--but that need not be punctuated with something overreaching to compensate. Still, I find McCarthy a fantastic mind and compelling writer..."Blood Meridian" is one of my favorites and I'm wandering (it's been awhile since I've read it) if it's similar stylistically to "The Road"? If so, then I suppose it would only take a few more pages for my reading brain to adapt to the structure and shortness of his sentences. Although I think I remember Meridian's sentences being a bit jam-packed with the verbiage and such and not entirely in line with the style McCarthy has been assigned and possesses to varying degrees. Taking a break from "The Road" and am now reading,

Yeah, that one is next for me as well (for obvious reasons). If there's a high profile book with a high profile movie upcoming, I feel obligated to read the book beforehand. Mainly, because, for example, "Atonement" meant really fucking good book before anyone envisioned anything for the multiplexes. If it has attained any sort of a classic status, it is absolutely essential I read first...it's just one of those things (in lieu of sufficient justification...).
Although I must say I don't like being "forced" to read books...as much as I wanna see the movie "The Road" I have to read the book first and it looks like I will be doing so begrudgingly because there's also my compulsion to avoid all things trendy no matter how worthwhile...
So I'm secretly wishing it is bumped to next year, even if it means one less great movie I'll be fortunate enough to see in theatres
But fucking shit! The other month I was spending at least an hour browsing and sampling the books for a potential purchase and had singled that one as a "maybe" before some plump housewife came by with a bloody shopping cart filled to the brim with books she'll never have the time for...she literally toppled the book straight from the bookcase into the cart, the Oprah loving bitch! She better be starting a makeshift library because I coulda had that for two dollars instead of a new one for like, uh, eight. I'm going to haunt many Barnes & Noble and Borders for the non tie-in edition now. Those editions remind too much of when I was in the fifth grade and would read the book versions of movies...that were released after the movie in a shitty distillation. My favorites were "Armageddon", "The Girl Karate Kid" (with young Hilary Swank!), and "Wild Wild West".

I'm currently reading Miracle At St. Anna. Not a bad book, haven't seen the movie but got the book based on the previews of the movie (figure that one out).
I plan to start reading Roots soon. I've been meaning to for years but never got to it so now I'll go for it.
Just finished Olympus by Dan Simmons. A ok book, but a let-down overall. I kept wanting it to get to the point already. For people who say Stephen King's books are too big and overwritten, read this series! (I like Dan Simmons, but this book wasn't as great as the first Illium).

In regard to some of the selections above,
I've read both "The Terror" and "Neverwhere" and enjoyed both.
I read Dan Simmons' "Summer of Night" this summer and wasn't too impressed by it. It started out strong but it stalled at the midway point and the end was a big let down. Essentially a poor man's "It". "The Terror" however was much, much better, it was very atmospheric, suspenseful, and mysterious. A good blend of history and horror and yes you can't help but feel cold when reading it.
"Neverwhere" was just ridiculously creative, imaginative, and witty.
By the way I'm having a hell of time finding something to read, does anyone know of any good books in the horror genre that isn't based on a long running series and is somewhat grounded in reality? you know something along the lines of the aforementioned "The Terror", Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft, or Robert McCammon? (his "Boy's Life" and "Swan Song" are great btw)

THE WOLF'S HOUR is a pretty fun read. It's about a Jomes Bond-like double agent in WWII who fights against the Nazis... but he's a werewolf. Really gory, action packed, like an R rated Indiana Jones adventure.
MYSTERY WALK is a fun read as well. It would make an awesome movie. I would love to make a screenplay version of it.
I still think BOY'S LIFE is his best novel, though.

This book is truly a find! It details a lot of 'historical' movies, and makes you want to scream when you find all the details and short cuts they make when they are supposedly honoring the dead, and displaying their stories on screen.
It's irked me for some time that Hollywood has the nerve to make money off of tragic real life events and turn around in press statements and say they are showing the dead's story and making sure we remember them, and yet they take so many damn liberties with the events, it barely resembles what happened. Dramatic effect, can take a hike. Might as well make it up entirely.

Wow, Im suprised I love the movies so much. This book was dull on top of boring with a side of nothing happened. Tolkein wasted his time describing a whole lot nothing most of the time. I only give it a 5 because there was the occasional passage of excitment or two. A HUGE dissapointment.

Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Stories and Novels Vol. I
I don't plan on reading all 1000+ pages right now, but having recently finished Blood Meridian and planning on American Pastoral next, I figured I needed a bit of a buffer between big major works of contemporary American literature.
Currently reading the first novel, A Study in Scarlet, where Watson and Holmes are first introduced. Damn fun to read.

I just got through reading "Heart-Shaped Box" by Joe Hill (yes, Stephen King's son). It was very good, actually, and reminds me of the simplier yet great early work from King like "Carrie" and "Cujo." If you're into horror, check it out.
I plan on reading Dan Simmons' "The Terror" next.

I'm reading "Heart Shaped Box" right now as well, about 100 pages in. This book doesn't waste any time getting to the point. Freaky. Unfortunately I'm in the midst of exams and I have a hard time reading anything that isn't school related at this point. I do plan to finish it though.
By the way I've also read "The Terror" and enjoyed it; great atmosphere and well written if a bit technical at times (in terms of shipping that is), still reading that book will make you feel cold.
Btw how do you choose which books to read btw? I ask b/c I found both books by searching through Amazon.com, to be more specific I was looking for books similar to Stephen King's and which were also of high quality according to reviewers. You?

I'm dealing with exams as well. I read "Heart-Shaped Box" in three days during spring break. It gets intense and rather gruely towards the end!
More great news about "The Terror." I actually do the exact same thing when it comes to researching what books I want to pick up. I also sometimes just go to Google and type in "Best [enter genre here] Novels" and look at "best of..." lists that pop up. However, most of the time I use amazon when trying to find a good book (it's like imdb for novels). This way, I've stumbled upon H.P. Lovecraft, Joe Hill, Dan Simmons, and Steve Alten because I was a big fan of Neil Gaiman and Stephen King.
I picked up King's "Duma Key," Gaiman's "Smoke & Mirrors," Hill's "Heart-Shaped Box," and Simmons' "The Terror" on my last trip out to the book store. I'm also hoping to pick up Palaunuik's "Haunted" and Peter Straub's "Ghost Story" sometime soon.

For school. My first time reading Virginia Woolf, outside a short story junior year of high school that I barely remember. Mindblowing though, to say the least.
