This site is so large with many links that I can't find the one where a few people have stated their views on the greatest living American writer.
More than one person said.........Stephen King.

My, have standards dropped so far in the last thirty years that not only do people not read much real literature but they have no idea what this is?

One has to have standards in choices. If you think King should be given this title then you have no idea what standards mean except that a book is soooooooooo cooooooollllllllll! Obviously people who think King should be given this title are either terribly deslyxic or quite clearly under the age of say two in the guise of a boy of 35 or younger.

A great writer writes of themes with well constructed characters, ambiance, mood, tone, and other things all you cccccoooooooooooooooooolllllllllllllll people don't seem to know anything about. The fact that King has written over 54 books in a tad longer than 30 years says that he dashes the things out with little thought of much of anything using the same tired stereotyped horror images that have been used since after Lovecraft; how many monsters with big ugly teeth can one write?

Sadly, the latest poll in England shows that Rowland, the author of the Harry Potter series, is considered to be the greatest living English author. How sad that standards have dropped so far that even English people think that only what is currently popular is great. Chaucer is rolling in his grave.

Perhaps all you Kingphiles need to actually read books on great books, but then doing so would really ruin your ignorance.

As a side note, such ignorance as yours shows a diminished awareness of many things and probably shows some lack of intelligence, for truly intelligent people understand what standards are and how to apply them. And a truly intelligent person would never consider King as anything other than a half-baked Bit Mac with fries, something King called his writing with all sincerity.

Have fun reading, kids.

So, I started reading Dan Simmons' "Hyperion". I haven't read enough to know if I'm enjoying it, but it points at two things: 1, the plot looks very interesting; 2, it's unlike anything I expected it to be.

Is it lonely up there on your pedestal? I've read a lot of books. I majored and got my Bachelor's in English, which meant I had to read a LOT of classics. I read Steinbeck (The Grapes of Wrath is one of my favorite books), I read Chaucer, I read Milton. All wonderful works and great pieces of literature.

But it sounds to me that you have never...ever read a Stephen King novel. Just because a writer is current or popular does not mean that his novels aren't "literature" (a very subjective term if there ever was any). You say a true novelist writes about themes and has well structured characters, etc. King's novels (most of them anyway--I would by no means say that I love all of his books) have these. Read 'Salem's Lot, Carrie, The Gunslinger, The Stand, Desperation. Common themes in those books (even partially)? Religion. I could read those books and write an entire thesis on King's view of religion. IT, The Body, Dreamcatcher? Childhood bonds. Need I go on?

And I also think it's funny that you mention J.K. Rowling and that it's a joke that she is considered a great novelist. Especially considering the fact that I took an entire college course on the Harry Potter novels, in which we delved at the root of what the books were trying to convey beyond "fun magic stories."

The problem is you're taking these novels as simple fluff when there is so much more to them. Just because a novelist is popular does not mean that their novels are shit and there's nothing to gain or ponder about.

And speaking of books on great books, pick up King's On Writing. He doesn't merely talk about himself, but other works of literature as well, and what he learned from them.

About halfway through right now. I'm actually pretty surprised at how slow going the first half has been (though the past chapter titled Door and Demon lead to an exciting final 40 pages). I'm enjoying it mind you, but I feet that Drawing of the Three was a rollercoaster of a page turner compared to The Waste Lands so far. That said, I can't wait to get further! :)

Thank you both, I am. I have to admit though that I dig IT a lot more than the Stand, but with each page The Stand gets better and better. The beginning seemed to jump around too much, and consist of a cast composed entirely of supporting-characters without a lead, but as King developed them I warmed up a lot more to the story. I'm about 830 pages into it right now and I can't imagine him killing off any of the characters, except maybe Possible Spoilers, but I seriously doubt it!!! Nadine or Harold.

http://www.cclapcenter.com/archives/heartshapedbox.jpg

I just got through reading "Heart-Shaped Box" by Joe Hill (yes, Stephen King's son). It was very good, actually, and reminds me of the simplier yet great early work from King like "Carrie" and "Cujo." If you're into horror, check it out.

I plan on reading Dan Simmons' "The Terror" next.

I just finished reading "Heart Shaped Box" recently and I had absolutely no idea that it was written by the son of Stephen King!! Absolutely none.

I was actually really impressed with this book. It was very well written and very engaging. I remember saying that I hope this guy writes more books. If I'd had known that he was the son of Stephan King before hand, I may not have appreciated it as much.

In any event, Stephen King should be very proud; his son has wrote a fine novel that stands well on it's own.

I tend to be a bit schizophrenic in my reading habits and am generally reading a few books at once, alternating between them as I see fit or based on what I've got with me. Right now I'm reading:

Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates (one of the best books I've ever read),
Gomorrah by Roberto Saviano
Blink by Malcolm Gladwell, and
Drama City by George Pelecanos

Not a stinker in the bunch, it's been a good week.

I'm also reading Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller. It's not bad.

I'm currently reading Wizards First Rule. I watch Legend of the Seeker, but I never stick around for the credits. I did one day and what do you know, it's based on a book and I like it more than the show.

The Cosmic Puppets - Philip K. Dick

That's where my name comes from. It's a very fun novel. I had a blast reading it. It was more adventurous than Dick's other works. The guy was pretty out there with his concepts even in 1957.

I've always wondered where you got your name -- I randomly picked out the book because the title stood out. Never read anything by Dick 'cept for one or two short stories.

Cool. It should be a quick read. I read it over an airplane flight I took when I was visiting my cousin.

I just read Wild at Heart by Barry Gifford again. It's really different from the film. The book is more of a road novel that's about Sailor and Lula trying to get to California, except it's also about the art of storytelling. Many of the chapters are about Sailor or Lula or another character talking about a past occurrence or a memory or a story they heard about. I liked the book. It was my second time reading it. I read the first time about four years ago. The dialogue is very impressive. It just rolls off the tongue of the characters and it feels very personal and realistic. The way he writes Lula's manner of speaking is great because it sounds like she's asking a question but she's making a statement. It's a fun book to read.

Wow! This is one of the few Philip K. Dick works I've yet to touch. Dick is an absolutely genius. So much so that I end up having skimming through and analyzing his novels after I read them just to make more sense of the stories. I've actually always wondered were you got your username and now I'm very interested in picking this up.

Let us know what you think LazyBoy.

As for me, I'm reading Terminal Havoc currently. It's very King Kong meets The Thing, but it's interesting thus far.

One of my problems is that I often start reading another book before I finish the current one. These I'm reading at the moment.

This was recommended by one of the staff members at Joseph Beth, she said any person who's a fan of Scorsese and Tarantino movies needs to read this book.

I know ZERO about Naomi Klein in general, or this book specifically, except what I just read on wikipedia, and that my friend, who is very bright, but increasingly blindly leftist socialist, is in love with both of them.

Beyond the fact that "Liberals think it's the bees knees; Conservatives think it's garbage," does anyone have anything I should know going into this?
