Right now I'm reading Memoirs of a Geisha, and it is an amazingly beautiful story.
I don't want it to end, although I can't say that much has really happened in it. Wierd, huh? I'm half way through.

Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo, really intense book. So far pretty depressing, but good.

The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky. I'm about 210 pages in and, though I struggled with the first fifty or so pages, once you get into it, it's really hard to put down. The characters are very vividly drawn and the plight of Prince Myshkin and the manner in which events unfold had been, thus far, surprisingly entertaining (I didn't expect to enjoy it...it was a recommendation). It's also not anywhere near as depressing as I anticipated. There are frequent and wholly unexpected moments of humour. If this continues to impress as much as it has so far then I think it could be the best book i've read in a number of years.

I'm alternating (again) between three books:
Nigel Hawthorne's THE SCARLET LETTER (the prefacing sketch was a bit long, buddy, but the story itself is pretty well told, even if the characters talk like in THE VILLAGE:D)
Gustave Flaubert's MADAME BOVARY (just a silly romantic tale, really)
Dennis Copper's FRISK (gay sex deluxe - I don't know what's SOOOO interesting and artful about fucked-up fags fuckin', that we always have to read'em in American Literature seminars?!?!)

Before that I finished Joseph Conrad's amazing HEART OF DARKNESS, which served as the basis for APOCALPYSE NOW (y'know, "The horror! The horror!"). Although it had no real plot to speak of, the philosophical stream-of-thought and the dense descriptions of the jungle were pretty impressive. Now I know where Coppola got the disturbing atmosphere of APOCALYPSE NOW from. "The horror!"

Im reading a book called "I, Lucifer"
Check out the description.

"The Prince of Darkness has been given one last shot at redemption, provided he can live out a reasonably blameless life on earth. Highly sceptical, naturally, the Old Dealmaker negotiates a trial period - a summer holiday in a human body, with all the delights of the flesh." "The body, however, turns out to be that of Declan Gunn, a depressed writer living in Clerkenwell, interrupted in his bath mid-suicide. Ever the opportunist, and with his main scheme bubbling in the background, Luce takes the chance to tap out a few thoughts - to straighten the biblical record, to celebrate his favourite achievements, to let us know just what it's like being him." Neither living nor explaining turns out to be as easy as it looks. Beset by distractions, miscalculations and all the natural shocks that flesh is heir to, the Father of Lies slowly begins to learn what it's like being us.

Theres a much better synopsis on the back cover, with Lu optioning his life-story off to a film producer etc. It sounds really fun.

STAR WARS: REVENGE OF THE SITH, by Matthew Stover. As with its predecessors, I'm enjoying the book. It really gives more depth to my own viewing of the films. It feels comfortable and in some ways new. I imagine the scenes, but then realize I haven't been there at all when I see the film. The books never read exactly like the scripts or the scenes, but they add a different dimension to the films by giving some thoughts that simply can't be displayed in scenes or dialogue.

JONATHAN STRANGE AND MR. NORRELL by Susanna Clarke.

Ok folks. I was going to start a whole thread on this book, but I thought this post would do for now. If you like fantasy in anyway, this is a MUST-READ!

Here's some praise for this great book:

"Ravishing...superb...combines the dark mythology of fantasy with the delicious social commentary of Jane Austen into a masterpiece that rivals Tolkien."

Rivals Tolkien?!? When I read that, I can honestly say I was a little skeptical, but it's really good.

And I think most fantasy readers here would recognize the name Neil Gaiman (Sandman, American Gods). Here's what he has to say:

"Unquestionably the finest English novel of the fantastic written in the last seventy years. It's funny, moving, scary, otherwordly, practical and magical, a journey through light and shadow--from beginning to end, a perfect pleasure."

That's all pretty high praise, and I can tell you from my own opinion that I tend to agree with them. This book is awesome, and if you enjoy reading, it's one you have to read. I regret the folks that may never know about the greatness of this book.

Fascinating book. The Hurricane actually comes off as a not-so-great guy. He was in a gang, he shoplifted, he was involved in street fights, he was slightly homophobic, and he does have a mean, agressive vein to him. And it's fascinating to see how he lived such a life in hell and did so many wrongs and was actually sent to jail for almost his whole life for two feats he was obviously and blatantly not guilty for, and just because he was black.

I've got a book on Martin Scorsese to read, and then both of Pat Riley's books. I'll be back once I get through those. :)

I just started reading the Watchmen last night...... First chapter down, and I still don't know exactly how to pronounce rorschach.... Either way it's pretty bad ass, and I like the way they work the Night Owl's book into the story...

Currently reading The Algebraist by Iain M. Banks. It's a sci-fi novel that throws at least a dozen ideas at the reader per page whether they are required or not and often without a complete explanation as to the importance or lack of importance of said ideas. It was a bit of a struggle to start with but now that i'm almost a third of the way into it i've found myself surprisingly gripped by the slowly developing plot. I'm a huge fan of Mr. Banks' non-sci-fi novels and have in the past tried several times and quite unsuccessfully to get to grips with his genre novels. I was a little more patient with this one and so far i'm pleased that I gave it a chance. If it continues to impress I think i'll backtrack and read his entire Culture series.

I almost finish reading Invisible Monsters by Palahniuk and all I have to say is that it's hilarious, brilliant and very Chuck-ish. I probably am a bad judge at the moment, since I love it so much, but I think it's his best (and I read Fight Club, Choke, Survivor and well, Guts). Started reading it today in the afternoon and I think I'll just have to finish it before I go to bed, or I won't be able to fall asleep.

"The Suspect" by Michael Robotham. About 200-odd pages into it, and I'm not very impressed. Lots of rambling on by the main character about personal issues, and its getting on my nerves. I thought I was picking up a thriller when I bought it. Oh well. Just purchased "Faithless" by Karin Slaughter, which I'm very much looking forward to reading. Just need to finish "The Suspect" first.
