I hear you, man. I'm trying to read The White Hotel, and it is a fucking chore to get through. Very psychoanalytic, but quite dull after a while, even if it has a lot of blunt sexuality in it.

I might just put this down and start something else, which is rare for me.

A particularly disturbing chapter? "How To Tell a True War Story"

I love that book. Also his Going After Cacciato and In the Lake of the Woods are both worth a look. His writing is really grand in a kind of offbeat way, and the stories really kicked my ass.

Have you read Requiem for a Dream? If not, Selby's style can get aggravating -- he tends to run paragraphs together and not let the reader in on who's talking (he doesn't include quotation marks, either).

So far (only a hundred pages in), it's more or less a series of interconnected stories about different lower-class characters (sailors, hooligans, prostitutes, transvestites), and none of them are sympathetic or even likeable, always lashing out at authority and each other.

The section I'm on is called "The Queen is Dead," and it's pretty good.

No, I haven't read 'Requiem.' The movie was more than enough for me. :o
Damn, I usually hate that kind of writing style...it just aggravates me. :D

The book sounds pretty odd, but I guess Selby likes writing about un-sympathetic characters. It still sounds like an interesting read.

At the Moment:

Fight Club - Jeff Palahniuk

Am I wrong to like Jim Uhls screenplay better? Palahniuk's writing style is, while immensely entertaining and original, too disorganized for me. I suppose my opinion is tainted having seen the genius that is Fight Club beforehand, but I do feel that had I read the book a few years before Fight Club was released I would have humped it, such was my love for the work. I'm not nay-saying Palahniuks material, as he truly is a visionary, but I prefer Jim Uhls more linear approach.

Watchmen - Alan Moore

No matter how many times I read this, I find something new to like about it each and every time. I am yet to find anything, including Alan Moore's other works, that is on par with this monumental achievement of literature. A perfect blend of science fiction, romance, action, drama, noir, and fantasy. Best. Read. Ever.

Who watches me blow my load over Watchmen?

It's a good story, but I'm not so sure either how they will adapt all that inner conflict/growth within Kitty...Watts will have a great road ahead of her if she accomplishes something masterful with the role, as far as some early reviews I've read have mentioned.

The final act of the book may be problematic on screen, as well -- there's the decision of how downbeat, and how long, the final portion of the adaptation should run, or it will alienate audiences.

I hope they keep the "Elegy" line intact - a fitting moment.

I just finished reading The Shining by Steven King (ofcourse)
It was so fantastic!
The movie came out while I was very young and I've only seen it once, maybe 6 years ago,or so.
I was iffy about reading the book, at first. I didn't know if reading a book about peaople being trapped in a hotel for x amount of months would really be that great, or intruiging (not to mention, how old this book is). But I was very pleasantly surprised, I must say! I could not believe how much I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The pace was pretty spot on the entire time. It only slowed down at bits, for just a little while. But most of the time I found myself reading so frantically, that I had to go back and read over some parts a second time because I was reading so fast. Great, great, great book. It's now in my top 3 King books along with Fire Starter and The Dark Half.

Same with Hannibal Rising - I'm currently looking for this at a decent price (What can I say, I'm a cheapskate) - I wasn't all that impressed with Hannibal, but still, I'm looking forward to Hannibal Rising.

As for me, I've recently started : -

So far, so good - it's very Hugh Laurie sounding, in terms of the characterisation, if that makes any sense - As I'm reading it, in particular the way the main character talks, I'm easily picturing a film adaptation with Laurie post Jeeves and Woster, though pre-House MD in the role.

Clive Barker's "Sacrament". I'm not sure what to think of it. IT's the first of Barker's books I've read, but there's so much sexuality in it that it is really distracting. The book becomes more about a gay mans life, then it does the fantasy story that Barker had started to develop wisely in the first 300 pages. Not sure about this one.

So far, so good - it's very Hugh Laurie sounding, in terms of the characterisation, if that makes any sense - As I'm reading it, in particular the way the main character talks, I'm easily picturing a film adaptation with Laurie post Jeeves and Woster, though pre-House MD in the role.

'twas the same with me - I happened to be browsing through Wikipedia, looking for the House Episode listing - decided to do a little background reading into the actors, and although I knew a fair bit about Hugh Laurie, I wasn't aware that he'd written a book, so once I spotted it I went out and grabbed a copy.

As for the book itself - because of the way it's written (mostly first-person) you can kinda tell that it's a Hugh Laurie book, in terms of the sense of humor - I'd deffinately recommend it.

Ah, it's okay. You're just missing out on one of THE GREATEST AMERICAN NOVELS EVER!!!!!11n fdjbjrzst]'gbjkDslzbhjzdfblblb

:p

Just kidding. It's fine. It's a great book, and you should have fun. I've missed so many classics it's not even funny, but Fitzgerald was always up my alley for some reason.

It seems that lately though, most books I read I can't connect with.

You know what the shit part of of it is (in the end picture), I don't think I have a top 50 with novels. :(

Unbearably pathetic, but it's true... I can't possibly have loved more than 50 novels (which, from all the ones I read, includes tons of classics).

One of my favorite books, The Stand, is filled with enough material and allegory to fill 50 novels...but I have so many left to read, past and present, that I don't even no where to start.

Despite my passion for good literature, it didn't always manifest itself years ago due to perhaps my struggle or obstinant rebellion against being TOLD what to think about each novel in high school/college. So, when I read something like Wuthering Heights, the normal feeling of mushy period stuffiness I used to ascertain (unread) is replaced by a sweeping romanticism that makes me want to read more in the same genre.

I'm not too big on King, but I'll check out the Stand.
I have a lot to read too though, way too much.

And personally, I never read that many books in high-school/college.
I'm not an English major, so books in college were a "no-no" (other than the GEs, which in the English Lit class I only read poetry).
In High School, I can't possibly imagine more than 10 serious books ever being assigned.

So, I never had that problem...it was more ofa personal thing.

Like, what's the last book you read that shook your world?

I don't remember. Maybe I'm reading the wrong books, or I don't know.

Movies just click with me...it's not that I'm lazy. :)

These days I'm reading The Reivers, by William Faulkner. 100 pages in, it's good (about half-way through), none of the sort of epicness or character depth (or general negativity) of Light in August or As I Lay Dying, just good, clean fun. I think Faulkner, Marquez, and Steinbeck might be my three favorite authors, although I need to do more reading by the first two.

[Don't worry, no spoilers, and the references won't make sense until you're already at the point in the story it's referenced anyways...]

I thought the first book was pretty good.
Book two not AS good, and you thought the FIRST book didn't have much happen? Hah!

Then I got to THE BLOOD OF THE FOLD, and I have to say that after the second book making endless plot recaps and paragraphs of storytelling of things we should already know if we're reading book two.... it's even WORSE in book three.
Tell me how many times you'll read "... with the word TRUTH burning into his hand," or something similar.
Even worse was doing story recaps through forced dialogue between the characters, especially when it came to the Mud People and their customs.
I skimmed through book four, and once AGAIN I was being told through dialogue - twice, by random skimming within a 5 minute scan - about Mud Peoples' customs.
It goes on and on, but I have to say that I am NOT reading any more of that series.

Perhaps this will help you prepare for what you're getting into? And you'll like it more? Here's hoping...

It's a pretty good book, I'm halfway through. It covers a pretty basic story of immigration, assimilation and discovering ones roots as concerning one Gogol Ganguli, so what I'm looking for is the attention to detail of everyday life that Lahiri covers in both American and Indian cultures.

Sounds pretty interesting...like an Indian coming-of-age story (rarely told). The trailer made the film look a bit melodramatic, but I don't know.
