Beck - "Soul Suckin' Jerk"

Badly Drawn Boy - "The Shining (Avalanches Good Word For The Weekend Remix)

Flying Burrito Brothers - "Juanita"

Those should all be pretty easy to find if you don't have them already. That Badly Drawn Boy tune is good without the remix, but I swear to you that this remix is an improvement over the original, or so I think. Hopefully these tunes will groove you as much as they've grooved me.

I've already downloaded THE SHINING by BADLY DRAWN BOY. So I'll review it.

Cool tune. I love the guy's sort of flat vocals. I'm in a real mellowed out mood right now, and songs don't come more mellow than this one. I like the acoustic feel of it. The ending sounds like the end of some dramatic war movie...which I like.

Nice pick!

The other two are coming along just fine and I'll have my review up before Saturday!

BubbaStrangeLove Thought I would sit down and write a few reviews before I go out.

I may be in the minority but I'm not a big fan of badly drawn boy. I can hear their talent but I just can't get into their music. Something doesnt click in me. But this remix does greatly improve the original song. I really like the yodeling intro. Anything with Yodeling can't be too shabby. So in the end I liked the song but I just couldn't listen to it over and over but I can tell that Badly drawn Boy does have talent and deserves the current success they are floating around in right now. I think this makes sense....

Well on to the musical genius and guy I sat 4 rows behind at the bowie show...Beck. (Had to throw that in there :) ). Beck for me is a Love/not a big fan situation. I love his acoustic stuff ALOT. Satan gave me a taco is one of my favorite songs ever, as well as the entire one foot in the grave cd. His more experimental stuff just doesnt sit well with me though. But.... I really like this song! At first i was like "I don't know about this" then I was like "Hey this is catchy" and then I was totally like "This song kicks ass" (started off the sentence accidently sounding like a valley girl so I thought I should like totally end my review like this" So in the end I liked this song. *throws up a thumbs up*

Now on to round 3. Juanita. Can I just say this is no where near the song I was expecting to hear. For some reason I just assumed their music would be like They might be Giants. Why i made such a stupid assumption, I have no clue maybe it was the wacky name. What I do know is that the country songs I like are few and far between. This lilttle bastard falls into the like category right away. I felt like hopping onto a horse and riding off into the desert where I would eventually die of malnourishment due to lack of survival skills. Very Catchy, a little emotional, and the ending made me feel fuzzy inside. I'm actually relistening to it again as I type this. My favorite of this musical trio. Nice picks Bubba and thanks for contributing all these weeks!

I'm glad that you all are digging everything so far.

I had no idea that Badly Drawn Boy was a well-known band. I first found this song looking for stuff by AVALANCHES. I came across this remix, and it's been one of the coolest things I've heard all year. When i started looking into the band more, I was amazed to see that they did an entire soundtrack for a film. Are they a British phenomenon?

Bowieee, I agree though the rest of their song don't hold the same power as the remix.

That Beck song, I just love. The lyrics remind me of what things would be like if Shaft was a slacker. For some reason....

Fellas, fellas...something screwy has happened to my Beck download and the Fly Burrito Brothers is coming along quite slowly. So my reviews could be delayed...

Beck - Soul Sucking Jerk

Certainly not your usual happy-go-lucky Beck song, but tis along the same lines. Personally I love Beck so it's all good. I've always loved his lyrical sense, and how sometimes you can't even tell if he has one. Good for somethine different that's for sure. Plus it's got a funny title, which always helps.

Badly Drawn Boy - The Shining

I got the remix and was pleasantly surprised. Usualy I despise, no I LOATHE remixes. But this isn't too bad at all. The voice sounds very very familiar to me although I've never heard of anything by this group. I think it's mix between Lou Reed and Neil Diamond. Wihch is pretty eclectic if you ask me, but you didn't. Anyway the music in this song is phenomenal. And had a tight little groove going on. Good. Reminded me a bit of the Pixies for some reason

Flying Burrito Brothers - Juanita

Wow quick song, 2:30. Wow this is a good little ditty thoguh. Reminds me of El Paso by the great Marty Robbins. And usually I hate country but every once in awhile a song will hit the right chords, both literally and figuratively, and draw me in. And this did it quite well. Plus I'm a sucker for story songs.

Allin all:
1) Juanita
2) Beck
3) Badly Drawn Boy
but they all are very close.

I haven't been participating in this shindig as much as I'd like to, but I've got these tracks downloaded and I'll report back on them later. From what I've read thus far, I should enjoy these picks.

BECK- SOUL SUCKIN' JERK

First of all, I'm a mediocre BECK fan. Not all of his tunes tickle my pickle. But this one is OK. I like the techno beat and feel of it, something I usually don't. Nice pick!

FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS- JUANITA

Not my particular brand of vodka. I don't really like country...yeah, you heard me right! So, this one was my least favorite of the bunch. But still... ya' know.

Overall, nice picks bobo...

Out.

Glad... everyone is checking the songs out, and mostly enjoying them. Movie-Maniac, I didn't see your views on "The Shining" remix??

Not as Glad.... I think this song of the week forum has gotten the least amount of movement.

Oh well. Someone has to be unpopular. ;)

Don't be disheartened Bubba...I only got 3 or 4 reviews meself.

I've been away most of this week so I haven't had a chance to check these babys out!

I adore Badly Drawn Boy and "The Shining" is a great little tune! Damon Gough is a Manchester lad so I might be a tad biased!

Flying Burrito Brothers...EXCELLENT choice! Gram Parsons is another favourite of mine, what a man!

I'll be giving my thoughts at some point in the week, it's rather late and I'd like a listen before I post my review sooooo I'll bide my time for now!

Movie-Maniac - Take my advice. Don't announce who's up for next week until the end of your week gets nearer. ;)

Here goes nothing!

Beck's "Soul Suckin' Jerk" ~ I've always respected Beck's quirky sensibilities. The absent-minded lyrics, the purely experimental soundscapes, the fact that he's oblivious to pop culture...he's just a cool guy. This tune is definitely a breath of fresh air. It has a loose, unpredictable structure and is far removed from conventional songwriting. Plus, I dig the weird vocal distortions that kick in toward the ending. All in all, I'm pleased!

Badly Drawn Boy's "The Shining" ~ Decent mood music. None of the melodies were particularly striking and the guy's voice isn't anything remarkable, but I still flowed with this song. I could see myself drifting off into slumber with it (not out of boredom, mind you). I downloaded the remix, but the file wouldn't open. Drats. While I'm not fond of remixes, I was anxious to see what a remixed rendition of "The Shining" would sound like. I guess it just wasn't meant to be...

Flying Burrito Brothers' "Juanita" ~ I must admit, I have an aversion for country music. However, this little ditty was somewhat amusing. It's strictly stereotypical ("She left me...blah, blah, blah..."), but it did have an effect on me; it made me want to take up alcoholism. For me, old-fashioned country music is so very downbeat. It couldn't be anymore depressing, but that's perfectly alright. I didn't love this song. I didn't hate it. It's just there. Indifference prevails!

Overall, I took a liking to these picks. Not all of it was down my alley, but none of it was downright unbearable. A job well done, Bubba!

Right on, Count Chocula, the good part of a nutritious breakfast.

Let me say -- Best screen name ever! :)

Would you want an actual Count Chocula avatar? I may be able to make one. Lemme know.

Check out that remix really, though. It's a far cry better than the original.

For the last month or so i've been making sporadic visits to the forum and rarely making posts. I had a hard-drive failure and have only now managed to get things up and running again. It's nice to see that the Song Of The Week idea has continued to run and i'll be commenting on these tracks soon as I install some file sharing software and download 'em. They look like good choices. I've heard the Beck track and love Badly Drawn Boy (although I haven't heard this remix) and being a big fan of both alt-country and certain chunks of classic country I assume that the Burrito Brothers track is gonna be cool. Been meaning to check out Gram Parson's stuff for a while anyway. He's been a big influence on a whole loada stuff I listen to these days. Anyway...stay tuned for my reviews. They'll be coming right up.

I have been thinking of going with a Count avatar. I mean, it would only make sense! I'll be sticking with my current avatar for awhile, but if you can cook something up, that would be dandy!

Right...I haven't missed a "Song of the Week" thread thus far...I've managed to have my 2 penneth worth every week. I just had to go back to this little baby. It was really beginning to fuck me off.

Sooooo, better late than never!

Soul Suckin' Jerk (Beck) - I just loved this one...unconventional, refreshing, noisy, mellow in parts, amorphous, chaotic, pretty gorgeous and exciting. The lyrics were very decent. I adored the little blast of the accordion in the background and the plinkity plonk techno malarkey. Just a GREAT tune...One of THE best selections of ALL the threads thus far...

The Shining (Badly Drawn Boy) - I had a sneaky suspicion I was going to take a fancy to this particular remix...I'm fond of "Badly Drawn Boy" anyway. No surprises, I absolutely adored this (very different) version of an already beautiful little tune! It truly did make a huge difference...everything is warm and SUGARY...and it really did bring a smile to my face. "Damon Gough's" writing is simply superb, he writes the most exquisite, endearing, enlightening music. "The Hour of Bewilderbeast" is a superb little album...I'd recommend this musical escapade to anybody! Stunning stuff!

Juanita (Flying Burrito Brothers) - On to those brothers...and GAWD these kids are great. "Gram Parsons" is a hero of mine so I'm already familiar with a fair amount of "The Flying Burrito Brothers" music. I really enjoyed this...the harmonies were charming...and I felt all snug and teary-eyed. It's quite a perfect little tune, I can't find fault with this one!

Thanks for the picks Bubba...I must admit, they have been my favourite selections thus far. Perfectly suited to my own personal taste...a huuuuuge thumbs-up from me!!!
