I think when the rumor came out that Helm's Deep would be 45 minutes long, people thought the actual battle would be that long. Peter Jackson recently said the battle would only be 10-15 minutes. So I'm guessing the Helm's Deep section of the story may be 45 minutes, not the battle.

You mean Helms Deep? I read in an interview once that Jackson shot about 20 hours of battle footage, but the battle will be somewhere around 15-20 minutes. Probably be something like the Clone War in Attack of the Clones, though will be hard to keep a PG-13 rating for TTT since it appears to be a David Lean-sized battle

I think a 45 minute battle would be over the top anyways.
Even if it was broken up with a focus on characters and situations, it would still be too big a clump of a scene.
Around the 15 to 20 minute mark sounds about perfect in terms of continuous action.

This remark isn't hype, but it is obvious that this is going to be the greatest war footage of all time, fantasy or otherwise.

I asked PJ this question via the official LOTR mag and he said it occupies the last 30 mins. of the film, but they cut to other things during the battle.

15 to 20 minutes would be good. The setup looks huge, so hopefully this'll turn out to be the greatest battle ever filmed...

1. Saruman's army of 10,000 Uruk-hai warriors in full battle armor advances into the valley.
2. Helm's Deep defenders line the battlements and wait for the conflict to begin.
3. As a storm breaks overhead, the Uruk-hai army comes to a halt before the Deeping Wall.
4. Battle commences. The enemy erects siege ladders along the Deeping Wall and berserkers lead the assult.
5. Eowyn and the refugees retreat into the Glittering Caves below Helm's Deep.
6. Explosives places in a culvert blast a hole in the Deeping Wall. Aragorn is blown off the wall into the midst of the enemy horde.
7. Under a hail of arrows loosed by archers lining the battlements, the Uruk-hai assault the gates to the Hornburg with a gigantic battering ram.
8. King Theoden leads a heroic last charge out of the gates.
9. Eomer of the Mark arrives on the promonotory above Helm's Deep with 2,000 Rohirrim cavalry. They charge down the steep scree-slope and encounter the flank of the Uruk-hai army.
10. The Uruk-hai, attacked on all sides, flee to the entrance of the valley, where they find their way blocked by a mighty forest of angry Ents and Huorns.

...greatest battle ever filmed? Yeah, I'd say so. Well, at least, until RotK comes out. And, with 20 hours of footage from the battle, I wouldn't be surprised if it was 45 minutes on the extended DVD for the film. Actually, I think the TTT: EE will be, at least, 45 minutes longer than the theatrical release. But, 15-20 minutes still sounds reeeeeeal good!

Not bad, DumbFokker -- you got a knack for action scenes don't you? Anyways, seeing as I'm always chasing action in a movie (well, esp. in a movie), I would probably go with the 45 minute combat scene and want to shorten the setup some (under 3 hours for the second movie would be fine w/me!)... at least if the action sequence is shortened, we may be able to get the full thing on the bonus DVD next year.

I think you misunderstood that Dumbfokker invented those details by himself. They are actual info from the movie.

I played the Helms Deep levels, and 15-20 minutes seems about right. It supposedly took 4 months to film, and 20 hours shot. The game levels were psychotic, and should make one helluva scene
