I'm really happy that THE RING will cross the 100 Million mark this next weekend, it deserves it. I think it will probably make it to 150 Million at least, it should end anywhere between 150-200 Million, but probably not 200 Million, maybe 175 Million. Oh well, no matter what I'm happy that it has been so successful and at least made it to 100 Million, I'm glad it proved a lot of people wrong... Plus, there's no doubt it will kick ass on VHS/DVD, especially VHS, I mean, wouldn't that be fun to watch a video about a killer video? I think so... I think that would only make it scarier...

Well, I don't mind that THE SANTA CLAUSE 2 is doing well, but I'm glad THE RING was ahead of it. Go "RING" - keep kicking that ass! THE RING is like the MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING of horror movies, it just keeps going and going due to its positive word of mouth and repeat viewings. I'm very happy that it's doing so well.

I cannot wait for Friday's numbers. I think CoS is going to do amazingly well, I saw three shows of it today(12:01 AM, 9:00 AM, and 3:30 PM) and all three were sold out. I also noticed after the showings a lot of people were buying tickets for Saturday, Sunday, and some later that night. Right now, I think it will open with 29 million on Friday. Go Harry!

I sure hope it makes more than 29 Million on Friday because I predicted 36.3 Million for Friday at leesmovieinfo.com, the first one made around 32.3 Million on its opening day and I'm hoping this one can beat it...

I think it will open HUGE again. I didn't think so for the longest time because it wasn't as hyped up as the first "POTTER" film was but I went to my local theater for the first showing at 12 noon and it was PACKED. Adults and kids, I was like "Doesn't anyone work or go to school." My God!
But, I didn't see it because it was too crowded and I like to be able to enjoy my movie theater experience without all the annoying kids in the theater.

If these numbers hold up, and if the multipliers are the same as last year, then COS's opening weekend isn't going to match SS's, despite higher ticket prices and opening on more screens. COS will also have more competition, so although $300 million seems likely, it's not as assured as last year.
Huge drop for 8 mile. The general public isn't buying into it; and now that most of the Eminem fans have rushed out and seen it, it'll see huge drops.

Chamber of Secrets did extremely well. I know it is less than Sorcerer's Stone, but that is reasonable. I mean to say "OUCH!", you'd think it opened with 5 million. Chamber of Secrets will get good word of mouth and hold up well in the upcoming weeks and I am 100% sure it will make over 300 million, easily. The Two Towers will also probably open with less than FOTR. Sequels usually drop down a bit do to the fact that not everybody loved the original.
Am I the only one who is disappointed by Friday's numbers? I don't know why but they just aren't anything special, nothing truly surprising happened. But HOLY SHIT did I SPY drop, that's one HUGE drop. I SPY made 2.982 Million last Friday and had a weekend total of 8.81 Million. It looks to gross maybe 2.5 Million for the weekend, now that's a BIG OUCH!!! THE RING is still doing well though and looks to gross 11-12 Million for the weekend which will bring it over the 100 Million mark. 8 MILE had a huge drop this weekend which isn't too big of a surprise since movies that open big usually do have huge drops the following weekend. It will see smaller drops after this weekend. THE SANTA CLAUSE 2 held up a little better than I expected it would since it had to face some huge competition from HARRY POTTER. And even though the opening of HARRY POTTER is very big I still find it disappointing. But like dh said, I see it making it to 300 Million, probably not much more than that though, but it should at least make it to that mark. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING is still going and looks to make about 5 Million this weekend, it should make it to 200 Million sometime this next week, at the latest possibly Friday. FRIDA is kicking some ass in its limited release, I just love seeing smaller movies succeed. SWEET HOME ALABAMA is still showing good legs and looks to make it to 130-135 Million. Oh, and I almost forgot (and who can blame me?) about HALF PAST DEAD, it didn't do too horrible on Friday and it looks to make 8-9 Million for the weekend, most likely closer to 8 Million though.
Here's my horrible predictions for Harry Potter at leesmovieinfo.com :
Friday - 36.3 Million
Saturday - 37.5 Million
Sunday - 28.4 Million
Total - 102.2 Million
I definitely expected too much from this movie...

I respectfully have to say that you've jumped the gun, my friend. $29.8 million, while below the original, is still an amazing opening-day haul (fourth-highest ever), and is very good for a sequel. I and most people, at the end of the weekend, will be way off with our 3-day predictions (mine was $102.2 million), but it's still not that disappointing.
ANTBond007
11-16-2002, 07:25 PM
I don't think anyone has the right to call the opening a disappointment -- I mean, it's gonna cross $50 million tomorrow and will definitely cross $70 million. Yes, it's less than Sorcerer's Stone; but what do you expect from a sequel coming out a year after the original?
As for Two Towers' opening - I guarantee it'll be higher than Fellowship's. FOTR grossed $45 million opening weekend. Towers will make at least $60m.

I think TTT will open bigger than FOTR. After all FOTR didn't have an exceptionally big opening and trusted more on good legs. It also didn't have the luxury of being a very current cultural phenomenom, like HP. I think that the most important thing working against HP is the fact that the second film seems more or less the same as the first one if you look at the trailers and TV commercials, where as TTT has established a very different look and feel in trailers when compared to first film.
dh1989
11-16-2002, 10:40 PM
One thing that may have hurt CoS was that the trailers had less of an epic feeling. I don't know why, but they advertised it almost has a normal mystery(on television) and left out a lot of the awesome plot points. Maybe it is just me.
I also think TTT will make about 10% less than FOTR on its opening term.

Go Ring! It is still doing very well for a thriller that has been out for almost a month that doesn't have any big stars.

It's pretty sure thatt TTT will do better than FOTR in term of opening and total gross. People loved the first one and the franchise is now well know. Also, it's seem that the second book is better than the first and far less slow so that gonna make TTT to have good leg. I expect a 60 millions opening and a total of 360 millions$

I haven't seen it yet but I "might" be seeing it today with a friend if she's not busy. We were talking about seeing the 3:00 matinee today since the theater we'd be going to only has one showing of it Monday-Saturday @ 7:00, but on Sunday it shows at 3:00 and 7:00. I'm sure I'll enjoy it when I do see it. I'm actually looking forward to sitting down for some more Harry Potter magic, for some reason sitting down in a packed theater to watch Harry Potter just seems appealing to me. The only downside is all of the kids that will be there, hopefully they are all quiet... Anyway, if I see it today I'll be sure to let everyone know what I thought of it, and since I enjoyed the first one I'm sure I'll enjoy this one just as much if not more...

I wouldn't worry about the little kids... I saw Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone 4 times in the theaters and I never once had a problem with a loud kid (although I did have a problem with a lady on her cell phone behind me once). And Friday night at CoS there were no kids being loud at all (except for some dumbass who brought a new born baby). The only time I even noticed the kids in the theater was when there was just dialouge to progress the story, I could hear some kids getting antsy... But that wasn't a major problem. And it is a better expirience to be in a crowded theater, at least for me. I love it when the audience applauds for certain things (as they did in CoS, mainly something that Dobby does near the end of the movie)...

Harry Potter and The Chamber Of Secrets did great, even though the opening was less than its predecessor. Half Past Dead really beat my predictions, it should be called a surprise hit by its opening. And The Ring passed the $100 million mark as it continues to hold up very well.

YEAH! Harry Potter did very well. It is not much less than the original and I believe it is the 3rd biggest opening of all-time(Am I correct there?) and another good film, The Santa Clause 2, held up nicely considering the circumstances. I started to think it would because on Saturday I saw a big family asking to buy tickets for Potter, but it was sold out, so they purchased SC2 tickets. This may be the cause for the not-so-steep decline. 8 Mile fell greatly, but that was kind of expected since all of the Em fans raced out last weekend to see his screen debut. I Spy, wow what a drop! Poor Eddie Murphy! NOT! Although I do feel sorry for Wilson. As for The Ring, Dreamworks must be doing a tap dance. A moderate horror film with no BIG expectations(money wise), crossing 100 million is incredible. And it is nice to see sweet films like Sweet Home Alabama and Greek Wedding holding on to the top ten. Very nice grosses this weekend. I am happy. :)
Unfortunately I didn't get to see Harry Potter today because my friend got called to work when she was supposed to have the day off. And she's the only friend of mine that will see it with me, none of my other friends will even watch the first one. Like me, she didn't think she would like the first one either but she was babysitting last July and the kids brought it over so she ended up watching it and liking it. But anyway, I plan on seeing it in theaters sometime because I'd much rather see it on the big screen instead of on video.
