THE ENTITY (1982) Directed by Sidney J. Furie, adapted by Frank DeFelitta from his own novel. Allegedly true account of a young single mother (Barbara Hershey in a knockout performance) who is repeatedly raped and terrorized by the invisible title specter invading her home. Ron Silver (the Jewish Pacino) co-stars as a psychiatrist who suspects that the incidents are a manifestation of Hershey's repressed childhood sexual demons(!), while a team of parapsychologists challenges Silver's diagnosis by attempting to prove that the entity is real. Rounding out the decent cast are David Labiosa (one of the most realistic teens in the horror genre) as Barbara's protective teen son, Jacqueline Brookes as the lead investigator and Alex Rocco ("The Lady In White") as Hershey's confused boyfriend. Exploititive and overlong, though very scary in some spots (the rape scenes are punctuated by Charles Bernstein's pulsating rock score), the film loses momentum after the electroshock effects rear their ugly head, and the ending is ambiguous at best. Hershey proves with this film that she is one of the most underrated actresses in Hollywood, and Furie's direction is taut and efficient (extreme close-ups, tilted camera angles and cool crane shots). My grade: B.

Believe it or not, but I've never seen the entire movie before. I've seen some of the beginning and some of the scenes after the rape, but that's it. I need to go and rent this.

You got that right. Barb can Fuc*ing Act!
~Definitely one of my favorite horror movies ever.
~~Does everybody call Ron Silver the Jewish Pacino? That's Hilarious! He lives up to the name A reversal Of Fourtunes(I think that's what its called.)

The scary part about THE ENTITY is that it never stopped following her.
When Hershey is being molested by the entity and her breast is being touched by seemingly nothing is a marvel of effects.

This was a pretty damn scary movie. Extremely disturbing, especially the rape scenes which had me cringe. You just see her getting touch, and raped by nothing, nothing to fight, nothing to defend yourself from. Scary shit. Great acting, and a less than great ending accompany The Entity, A 7/10 for me.

Thanks Antonio
*wow*
Another bump for this great flick! I saw it for the first time the other night and was impressed. At the beginning of the movie I was dissapointed with the rape scenes- but as it progressed they became increasingly worse (better)!
TiVo alert- it's playing on FMC this month:

You know, I just joined this site from the urging of my friend Lord Crumb. And I'm sad to see that the only thing you can contsructively talk about in this movie is the rape scenes. I hope I don't see much more of this juvenile commentary.
The Entity has a great, and sad story. Try to follow the rest of it next time.

Displacer,
I believe what the rest were actually trying to say is how horrifying those scenes were. I know they scared the bejesus out of me when I first saw it. And that score that goes along with those scenes was just as horrific!!
One of the most overlooked great ghost stories ever.

Hey, if that's what's intended great. It couldn't be worded any more poorly though.
"At the beginning of the movie I was dissapointed with the rape scenes- but as it progressed they became increasingly worse (better)!"
It should be explained what "better" really is.
I for one don't enjoy anything like this in a film.
But, it's a necessary evil to establish plot in most cases, but I don't think it should ever be described as "disappointing" or "better". People should be thinking and writing more intelligently with topics like these. There ARE people who get offended by this.
To each his own.

Really enjoyed this film, it was really nasty how she kept getting attacked and there was nothing she could do. I felt the film got a bit stupid near the end when they were trying to freeze the entity though.

I can't really remember watching this film right to the very end. But i can certainly remember watching the rape scences and being a woman it made me feel slightly uncomfortable. As all other rape scences do, especially the one in 'I spit on your grave'.

A great movie! For those of you who like to read I suggest you read the novel and you can get them used at half.com or amazon.com. The book gives you such a detailed background on Carla, her youth, her marriages etc. I hated how the book ended though, but overall a great read!
**Spoiler Ahead***
The movie still spooks me though, especially the end when you hear the spirit speak. I could not understand what it was saying at first then I got it on closed captioning and he says
"Welcome Home Cunt" Wow I still get chills, but im like that, I get spooked by demonic unseen voices.:p

This movie is way scary and disturbing. Yes, the rape scenes are creepy, but there's cool spectacular and supernatural events with "ghostbusters," and we get very good performances and chemistry from Barbara Hershey and Ron Silver. What really gets to you is that you really feel for Hershey's character. She's in a extremely scary situation, but theres nothing she can do. This is one a jewel of a freaky ghost story. It's a shame that it so little known. I never would have known about it if it weren't for Arrow in The Head ("Thank you, Arrow!!!"). It was even hard to find, at least where I live. I had to order it.
For those interested: Fox released The Entity on DVD in Germany (reg 2) a few months ago. It has a beautiful looking (16:9) 2.35:1 Widescreen transfer and a 4.1 English Surround track.

Yeah i checked this one out the other day...I found it to be very very very disturbing.
Some of the fx are really good, like the scenes where the spirits touching her and you can see the form of its hands on her body but...no hands...spooky and very well achived for the time it was made.
I loooved some of the scenes that involved her trying to communicate with the spirit...and shes like defying it...and some electricity starts appearing. That scene and the scene where her son tries to save his mom while shes being raped by that spirit and he gets electrocuted..those were specially spooky for me.
I agree lots with Paralese Monster...voices of unseen demons and ghosts scares the HELL out of me. I put this film waaay up there with amytiville horror and the exorcist as being very high on the spookyness crap on your pants factor.
Cool movie and I agree with most of you, its very cringe induceing. And that music they put in the rape scenes with the rock guitar....very effective.
And its based on a real life story!

So, you liked "The Amityville Horror," too? I thought that movie was spooky, but so many say it is "boring." I'm glad I can finally get somebody on my side with that one. That was one of the few movies to actually scare me! Otherwise, I really liked "The Entity" too, and it too was waaaaaay spooky!
