For the record I count the first Ring movie as being worthy of classic status. Worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as Halloween, The Exorcist and The Evil Dead. Along with The Others it is the only horror movie in recent memory that has succeeded in making the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. It had everything. An intelligent script, compelling story, excellent performances and atmosphere creeping off the screen like some kind of malevolent force intent on scaring the absolute bejesus out of the viewer. It scared me. Badly. The scene where Sadako crawled out of the TV screen almost made me switch the damn thing off (I was watching it alone and late at night...lights out). So it was with some trepidation that I watched the sequel last night. Was I disappointed? Yes. It was still a good movie but once again the law of diminishing returns that decrees the majority of sequels must be pale imitations of their predesessors was at work. The acting was still excellent but the atmosphere of dread and impending doom that gave the first movie it's impetus was missing. It wasn't a total failure though. Several scenes managed to evoke at least something approaching the level of fear provoked my the first movie. I may have enjoyed it more if I hadn't been so damn tired. During the last fifteen minutes of the movie I kept drifting off for several seconds at a time and likely missed something important. Anyway...it was good. The first movie probably has a place in the top twenty best horror movies i've ever seen (if I could be arsed actually making such a list). Ring 2 likely wouldn't make the top 100. If you loved the first movie then definitely make an effort to see Ring 2. If you just thought it was ok then give the sequel a miss. 3.5 out of 5

Glad I wasn't the only one who felt this way about the sequel. Damn shame.

If you go to Ringworld and read about Ring 2's novel story it is a hell of a lot cooler than the movie, but that is usually the story with most movies....

Thank you so much Psycho for talking about this. I have been so hesitant on going out and buying this-no store near me has for rent, but one has it for sale at $20. I kind of held off since the Ringworld site said it was ok.
But, do you think it's worth spending $20 on?

Also, hey was it you that recommended Night of the Scarecrows to me? Not DARK Night of the Scarecrows but Night of the Scarecrows?
Can't remember. It was soooo long ago we talked.

Is it worth $20? Hmmm. I really don't know. If I had bought it I wouldn't have felt cheated but now that i've seen it on TV I don't think i'll buy it unless I can pick it up at a bargain price. I'd likely buy it for $20 but it would depend on how well off I was moneywise. Hey...if you've got money falling out of your ass then go ahead and buy it...it ain't gonna hurt too much. If you are a little short of cash right now then i'd give it a miss. It's better than a lot of other movies i've bought.

As for Night of the Scarecrows. Do you mean Scarecrows? The one about the bank robbers who end up lost in a field of corn and are picked off one by one by demonic scarecrows? If this is the movie you are talking about then YES...I did recommend it. Did you track down a copy? What did you think? I've missed out on two copies on Ebay because i've got the memory of a brain damaged chicken.
