View Full Version : Why are cuss words bleeped out for some songs but not for others?

Like today I was listening to Pink's Just Like A Pill, and they cut out the word "bitch"

But on that same station they played Meridith Brooke's song Bitch all the way through without cuting any thing out.

And on the R&B stations it's "Bitch,cunt,ho,fuck & ass."

What's going on here?????????

I am totally lost.

End of Rant.

Well, I don't know if it is like this in Ny Bloody, but this is how it is in La -

On a "pop" station, such as the one that would play Pink's song, they will not say bitch. Why? Who knows? But I will continue.

On a rap station here, they cannot say cunt, ho, or fuck. Even words not offensive in nature occasionally gey bleeped - weed, toke, smoke, gat, glock, clip, shell etc.

Now on Mtv, they will bleep things haphazardly. Maybe one time they will bleep bitch, and another time they won't...I think it may be due to the hours in which children (like myself) would watch it. I know they will say worse shit late at night than they will at "primetime". They are even more adament (sp?) about the non-offensive words than the rap stations, very uptight indeed.

Translation for all the above - I have no fucking idea and the censors don't either.

There probably isn't any explanation. Just...flawed censorship, I guess.

I think it is becuase of the listening audience. A pop station and a few rock and rap stations will bleep immensly becuase they know children will listen to the station. I always find the profanity to be less edited or unedited after 10 p.m. and before 7 a.m. I bet it is probably because stations realize the children are off to bed.

They never blank out "bullshit" in Pink Floyd's 'Money'.

For that song (by Meredith Brookes) it's a bit hard to censor since the songs name is Bitch, and the chorus uses it a lot, so they have to let it slide.

Sometimes things are censored because of the context. Maybe there's a song where they say "I hate it when those fags burn," but in it, they are referring to one meaning of fag, which is a bunch of sticks together used to make a fire, like what they teach in Boy Scouts. If there's a hate song aired, w/ the same line, it'll be censored because of the context. I don't really know what the rule of thumb is, but I'm pretty sure this is part of the reason

On MTV they bleep out Eminem rapping:

They tried to shut me down on MTV but it feels so empty without me

What the fuck???

The MTV version of Pink's Just Like A Pill sounds like this:

Can't stay on your life support, there's a shortage in the switch.
Can't stay on your life support, cos it's making me itch,
I tried to call the nurse again but she's being a little switch

It sounds like a fucking parody - Wierd Al Yankovic style!!

Depends on the context like Scarface said, and also depends on the hours it's being played like Cemetery Gates said.

Like you could say someone is a bitch, if you are saying they bitch alot, but you can't call someone a bitch if it isn't explained why. (weird, but true)

And like you can say certain variations on ass, but you can't call someone an asshole, but they can be a dumb ass, or a plain ass.

Its crazy, really.

Yeah censorship is quite annoying, especially when they blank out people giving the finger. Gee, I wonder what they're doing?

On my radio, Just Like A Pill sounds like this:

I can't stay on your life support, there's a shortage in the switch,
I can't stay on your morphine 'cause it's making me itch
I tried to call the nurce again but she's being a little (Warped sound like they made the CD jump)

Censorship sucks, especially if they don't do it right.

The time of day is sometimes a factor. "Fuck" in Alanis' "You Oughta Know" was bleeped during the day but unedited after 10 pm.

Im waiting for one of the boybands do a swearword song and see how many times they are bleeped? I bet they would get away with it. MTV HAS SHITTY VALUE WHATSOEVER, the censorship is crazy, they hardly play quality videos or support the bands that actually have talent and know how to compose their own songs. Dont get me wrong if you like some of the MTV bands.

BUMP!!!!!!

Just in case anyone else wants to talk about music censorship.

I was listening to a song by Sarah Mcglaclin(I KNOW I mispelled that) called Building A Mystery. It was the concert version and they so obviously made the cd jump that it was jarring. The line uncensored goes:

You're so beautiful, a beautiful fucked up man.

I mean, it's the concert version! DON'T play the concert version of the song if you have to jar the cd to edit out the cuss words.

Another song that really gets edited is the song by Everclear(I THINK that's who sings it) What it's Like

The whole third verse is so badly chopped up that they might as well not play that part at all. The verse uncensored goes like this:

This kid named Max used to get fat stacks on the corner with drugs,he like to stay out late get shit faced (something I can't remember) Till late one night there was a big gun fight and Max lost his head, he pulled out his crome 35 talked some shit and wound up dead.

The censored version edits out the words drugs, shit, gun, crome 35.

By the time they're finished, the last verse makes no sense at all. Unless you own the album you have no idea what's going on.

As far as Pink is concerned, they should censor the first and last word from her songs. Oh, and everything in between.

Hey Sev, I'm not ashamed to say that I bought the Pink album, and it is very, very good. I can't remember her name at the moment, but the main chick from 4 Non Blondes had a big hand in helping write a lot of it. It's quality, man. Light years above anything Britney or Christina do.

And the song What it's Like is by Everlast, not Everclear.

just to rub more salt into the wound, surely it is impossible to confuse everlast and everclear? mind you, other than being totally different musically, one being a group, the other a solo artist, i spose you could mix them up

Actually, often its the record company itself that censors the songs, not the radio/tv stations. Thats why there is a discrepancy sometimes. In order to ensure the song will get played, they will censor what they think might be deemed offensive on the singles/videos they release to radio stations etc..

At least thats what I heard about MuchMusic. They do not themselves censor anything, but if they feel a video is offensive, they will choose either to not play it, or only play it at certain times.

some stations get more complaints about censorship and need to edit out words. other stations get no complaints. songs with words still in them probobly are more new and havnt had anyone complaining about them. the only reason of censorship is so that people dont complain to the station

One thing, of many, I hate about MTV...they are very fickle.

Disturbed's video for Prayer got banned due to scenes that LOOK like WTC rubble. (Actually caused from a very visable earthquake).

Eminem's video Without Me, filled with him dancing as Osama bin Laden, a-okay.

MTV changed the name of Tool's "Stinkfist" to "Track # 1" How dumb is that!?

Ahh....that verse is too censored. I hear it on MTV and it bleeps out the words you mentioned, but on my radio is doesn't bleep anything out.

Another one of MTV shitty decisions. They banned the video for The Berzerker's "Reality". But not for cussing. Get this, they actually said that 'the bands faces would traumatise young people who are comming home from school to turn on the TV." They also made up this bullshit claim that all of the lights flasing in the video would cause epelipsy(spell?)! The ICT also said that the bands faces would never bee seen on TV during the day. The video was also banned from Channel 4. It's just my opinion, but I think that MTV tries to keep heavy metal off the air. Think about it, all you see during the day it Shitty Charlette, and (C)rap. At least MTV2 had the decency to put Headbanger's Ball back on the air! Anyway, I just wanted to say that I have seen the "Reality" video, and it did not harm me in any way. But I might have to go to the emergency room because their faces scared me! :)

Here in Canada they have The Sopranos on at like, 9:00 at night. Uncensored. Same with The Osbournes. And also, does anyone even know what swears are allowed on television. I think shit is allowed. I seen it said on South Park about 160 times. Yeah and music censorship on MTV, radio, sucks.

I love Canada. Anything goes after 10 P.M. one Canadian network plays like Oz uncut at 8 p.m.
