ARROW RANT:

I'm truly annoyed by peeps that start threads on the board stating a strong opinion on something to then totally dissapear from the face of that thread once somebody comes in to challenge their statement in an intelligent manner. In my opinion, if you don't have the capacity or the balls to back your shit up, then dont put it out there in the first place.

END OF RANT

Just needed to get that off your chest eh Arrow? :) Well I must say I have been the victim of "thread disappearness" but after reading this I'll (probably) not happen again.

I'm not referring to random thread disappearing, which we all do (I know I do). I'm talking about the peeps that will start a somewhat "controversial" thread, taking a very strong standpoint on a "touchy" issue (therefore opening the door for debate) and then disappearing the moment an opposing point of view comes in.

Let’s say for example I start a topic claiming Horror is NOT sexist where I state my arguments on the hefty topic. Now if somebody would answer me with a total opposing point of view than mine, I wouldn’t freaking vanish into thin air! I would get back in there have a debate with the man till there was nothing left to debate about. Maybe I would even learn a thing or two through it all.

I mean why else would you start a thread like that?

My point is if you're going to open up a can of slithering worms and catch people's attention with a "sensitive" topic, have the balls to follow up on it and not exit once the shite hits the shan.

I hear ya, Arrow. There have been threads where I wish the poster would defend their opinion, but they just won't! And there ends any possible mature debate! There's no point in starting a rant thread, stirring up opinions, if you're not willing to defend what you're saying.

I wonder if this has something to do with that guy who thought horror movies today sucked. I don't think I saw a reply from him after you countered his argument...

Arrow, well some of the reasons for the 'thread disappearness" would be of course

1. A person forgets about the thread and 2, it might turn in into a CHAOS! or FLAME WAR! :(

I have noticed that this happens to most of the contoversial or heated debates. It's typical, and suspect.

At last, someone comes out and says it!

It is SOOOO annoying when you're browsing down the page, see something interesting, controversial, fun to argue, and, in anticipation of much debating and proving, post a reply. Five days later, it seems that the schmuck who originally posted has vanished! Where'd he go? What's he think of your side of the debate?

WHY THE HELL WON'T HE REPLY?!?

Or....

If you don't want to have a discussion about a topic you thought of, on a discussion board....

then don't bring it up!!!!

This has happened to me on numerous occasions, too many to count and it really gets on my last nerve. To give some examples of just recent times this has happened, one schmoe-who-will-remain-nameless made some comments I found to be pretty racist about a decidedly innocent man being shot, supposedly his fault. I replied twice with fairly long posts and asked them to defend their statement...they never posted again in said thread. Someone also said Roman Polanski deserved what they got with the Sharon Tate massacre, and when I tried to explain that that was BEFORE he was with a young girl, and after he survived the holocaut and made some great movies, and how does anyone deserve having their wife and unborn child horribly murdered...they never replied. Another schmoe doubted that I had either A.) Seen as many movies as I have or B.) was 16 and more or less insulted me and called me a liar, when I explained my insomnia situation, love for film, and age (I can provide recent pictures not to mention Jo and The Arrow have met me), they replied but never adressed the issue.

Nothing pisses me off more than when a schmoe makes a strong ballsy or unpopular statement, and then just leaves it alone when anyone has a counter. If you believe it, fucking defend it, and if not, don't say it in the first place. Great rant Johnny...

Maybe this issue was never addressed because it was just tangental, and not the topic of the thread.

yeah, but they might want to leave the topic alone if it gets heated beyond intention.

But it was, the topic of the thread was "About how many movies have you seen", so you claiming I hadn't seen as many movies as I have (or claimed to have), would fall under the thread header. But then of course, this topic isn't about that, so whatever. Sleeping dogs lie.

It's safe to assume he's refering to people posting on a movie discussion board.

Call it a hunch.... :D

And you people are being Waaayyyyy too sensitive in sticking up for these nimrods. FeverDog -- Sure people jump ship when it gets heated, but we are talking specifically about people who just state enflamatory remarks, without engaging in a DISCUSSION about it.

We're not talking about people not responding on a heated subject -- we are talking about people who HEAT UP the subject, then don't respond.

BIG difference.

You know what I hate? (Well, besides chocolate ice cream?) I get annoyed by vague thread titles. Hey, Schmoes, tell us what you're thread's about instead of posting something generic in the title!

BubbaStrangelove
04-07-2003, 04:18 PM
ICP RULZ - You might just think that because you haven't seen exactly what we are complaining about yet. The stuff that, at least I, am refering to could really be considered flamming.

Check out Quentin's example, and tell me how that's explainable. There are rules of conduct on bulletin boards, just like in real life. I think the consensus is that in both, you just don't call someone out, or insult someone, only to stay quiet. I know that many of us here have offered apologies, or clarification on many points which may have offended people, or came across incorrectly. If we have enough integrity to do this, why should we not rant when others don't follow the same consideration.

We rant about how people act in movie theaters, why not on message boards.

No one here is pointing fingers, just identifying a very specific situation. I am only responding to your post because I feel you, and Fever, were blurring the lines in regards to the types of things we are complaining about.

Instead of saying all of this, though, I should have just responded as such, though:

Well maby they posted it using all their ideas and arguments, then now that someone else has replied, they have nothing else to say as they said it in the first post

"No, that's not the case."

However, I felt you needed more follow-up than just that. :)

Me too. It's like getting an e-mail that says, "Wassup?" then you open it and find spam for penis enlargement.

(Spam for penis enlargement -- such an odd sentance, but not nearly as bad as it would have sounded 5 - 10 years ago.)

Fever, you should open up a rant about that (vague topic headers), and call it - "Check this shit out..." :D

I don't totally hate these things though. It's more like a matter of etiquite, or taste though. If I'm not going to slight someone for hating Magnolia, then I surely can't slight them for much else.

Feels good to comment about it though.

It is a shame, because for the most part, this JoBlo and the Arrow message board's are full of intelligent people who do enjoy voicing their opinions on certain issues, and to see someone turn tail and run at the sight of having a contrary opinion voiced, well...its just stupid. Bannings to all of those who do not follow through with their controversial threads!!!!!!!:D :D

Or what about when someone gets very HEATED in a discussion, or tirades on for days, and days, and days only to finally post something personal about other schmoes, only to say they are turning their back on the thread.

Seems like a cheap attempt to get in a last word.

Well, heres my lame-ass opinion on this matter.
First of all, its an interesting topic Arrow. No, it's not about movies, its all about the etiquette that seems to be pervading this here board lately. A topic I basically couldnt give two shits about, but what the fuck, I've got a few minutes....

The title of this board is RANT, RANT, RANT.
I think the crux of the problem, is that alotta people here dont know the fucking meaning of the word.
Well allow me to enlighten you.
RANT: Date: 1602
intransitive senses
1 : to talk in a noisy, excited, or declamatory manner
2 : to scold vehemently
transitive senses
: to utter in a bombastic declamatory fashion

A rant is a fuckin rant. It's when you need to get something off of your chest. Bitch, moan, and complain in a passionate manner about something that irritates the living shit outta you. I'ts not MEANT to incite any kind of *serious*, heavy, or *opinionated* discussion. Although some people think it is.... and they like to use this board as a soapbox where they can throw out their (sometimes) arrogant or ignorant views on various shit. In hopes of starting some kind of.... whatever. Talk...? Arguments, agreements, advice, answers, articulate announcements....babble, burble, banter, brouha-ha, back-talk, bicker bicker bicker..... comments, commentary, cliches, criticisms, controversy, chatter, contradictions, chit-chat..... debates, discussions, (These are words with a D this time) dialogue, diatribe, discoursion, dissention, double-talk! ... But I DIGRESS!!!

Well, thats all find and good by me. However that aint ranting.
But if the majority of the schmoes here wanna do that sorta thang, then I might suggest that the moderators/ owners of this here forum start a new board and call it "THE SOAPBOX". Or something.

Now, not to patronize anybody, but rather to further illustrate my unifying point, heres the definition of the word soapbox:
Date: 1907
: an improvised platform used by a self-appointed, spontaneous, or informal orator; broadly : something that provides an outlet for delivering opinions

OKAY! Notice that the word opinion appears in the definition of the word soapbox... although its not in the definition of the word rant. Why? Because it DOESNT FUCKING MATTER if a person ranting has a "valid" opinion on whatever the fuck he's ranting about ! He's JUST RANTING !

And now for my final thought.... I like a good RANT. Keep your fucking political, social, and otherwise un-interesting wordly views on things to yourself. This board is about MOVIES. I love movies. And I love hearing people RANT about "things Hollywood related". And if you just wanna bitch and get something off of your chest, dissappear, and couldnt give two shits what every other fuckin' schmoe thinks about it, then I say right the fuck on. Let 'er rip.

That's a really good point. Personally I see Rant, Rant, Rant as a place to just sound off and not get into justifying it. Saying that though most schmoes seem to like it as a debate forum which is fine by me; when in rome and all that.

If someone wants to jump ship from a Rant, Rant, Rant thread I'm not too fussed but it's a complete pisser when they do it in other forums...

Doc Holliday

If you are ranting to rant and get some shit off your chest...it's no big deal if you don't keep the ball rolling when someone attacks your rant. BUT, if you try that on other threads, you are pussying out and that aint cool.

Don't start something if you can't handle someone else dis-agreeing with you.
