Arrow,

I was just reading your review of "Scream" and was surprised that you barely mentioned Drew Barrymore's acting abilities during the opening scene...do you have a personal qualm with her?

I honestly thought that it was THE BEST performance ever in a horror movie...she was so realistically terrified...and I felt extremely sympathetic.

Did anyone else think her performance was as stellar as I did? If not, who do you think gives the best [terrified] performance in the genre?

I'll second your opinion of Drew's performance. She gave good fear. Very convincing. It's was no small feat to make me care about her character's fate with so little screen time at her disposable. The girl did good.

well, I really didn't pay any attention to it, actually.
I'm not a big fan of her acting AT ALL.
But clever casting decision just the same..

~~~Did anyone notice that Drewy was in Prom Night II??? I noticed it a little while ago....look for her in the Gym scene.
She's only there for a sec. so you cant blink
The best "terrified" performance I've seen in a horror film is definitely Marilyn Burns as Sally Hardesty in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I can't fathom how drained she must have been after shooting that film. Barrymore was solid in Scream, but the best ever? To each his own, I suppose.
Perhaps I should clarify that I don't think Drew's performance was the BEST ever in a horror movie. It was a stellar performance given the amount of screen time she had but Countchocula is on the money with his choice of Marilyn Burns. Her performance was what made the movie so fucking intense and harrowing. And let's not forget Linda Blair as Regan in The Exorcist.
I have the Scream Trilogy Box Set(a must have) and on the fourth bonus disc, it has a special Behind The Scream featurette. They spend about five minutes on that opening scene alone. What they did when they began to shoot it is, they took the telephone voice guy and they hid him on the set. Drew never met him and didn't know what his voice sounded like until they began shooting. She did that so she could truely be scared. It's very refreshing to see an established actress become so involved in a horror movie. Most "Names" in Hollywood brush right over the genre, and to have somebody like Drew Barrymore actually ask for the part and then get so into it was great. She definitely gave the performance of her carrer.
That was Drew Barrymore in the beginning? I knew she looked familiar....anyway I'm moving this to General Horror Talk, but I highly suggest you just e-mail Arrow if you have any questions about his reviews.
