Try these:

MAN BEHIND THE SUN: A chinese film depicting the Japanese biological experiments (Unit 731) on Chinese people in Manchuria during World War II. The Japanese were developing plague bombs and conducting grotesque medical experiments. An actual corpse was used for an autopsy scene during filming.

SERIES 7: Lighter than MBtS for sure. A dark dark comedy about a reality show called "The Contenders." Part THE LOTTERY, part SURVIVOR. A group of citizens are chosen by lottery to be the contenders. They are armed and have to hunt each other down and kill each other until one is left. The winner gets to be a contender in the next series. It is all televised and you cannot refuse to participate if chosen. A dead on parody of reality shows, which was written BEFORE the Survivor series and other reality shows ever hit TV. Worth a watch. Go, Dawn!

BATTLE ROYALE: A Japanese film. Set in the near future when the Japanese economy and society has begun going to hell. In response, Japan enacts the Battle Royale Act. I'm not sure how this was supposed to help cure social ills, but once a year, a middle school class is chosen to be taken to an island and set loose on each other until one survivor remains. Part LORD OF THE FLIES, Part SURVIVOR, Part THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME. Starring the ever-watchable Beat Takeshi. Scathing dark dark satire.

Hey thanks for talking about Man Behind the Sun. I actually saw this in my local video store and it looked interesting but I just wanted to know MORE.

So, in your opinion, definetly worth renting?

RE: MAN BEHIND THE SUN. Yes, definitely worth seeing. In terms of production values, it's pretty primitive, but for emotional impact and historical perspective, it's an important film. Especially interesting in light of the U.S.'s actions following the close of WWII. We basically allowed war criminals to go free in exchange for the data they had compiled as a result of their gruesome experiments. More than let them go free, we helped set some up in business, resulting in some becoming millionaires.

RE: BATTLE ROYALE. Yeah, it's available on video here in the states. It's not the kind of movie you will find at Blockbuster. I got a copy of an all-region DVD from E-Bay. You could probably turn up a copy on the web.

Yeah i'm a huge fan of Japanese horror. If I wasn't so strapped for cash I would really pursue some of the rarer movies i've yet to see (there are many). I'm particularly eager to see some other movies by Audition director Takashi Miike. I've heard very intriguing murmers about Itchi The Killer. Apparently it's like the current holy grail for fans of gory movies (along with Versus, Wild Zero and Junk...three other movies I am dying to see).

Anyway...Man Behind The Sun. I'm intrigued by this movie but apparently it features quite a lot of actual footage of atrocities and i'm bit squemish about that kind of stuff. Also...I quite like cats and the idea of watching one being fed alive to starving rats doesn't make me want to rush out to find a copy of this movie. Yech!!!

Series 7. I hired this from my local video store some months ago only to find that the damn tape was damaged and therefore unwatchable. It was ok up until ten minutes in then everything went pear shaped. It looked pretty good too. I'll catch up with it sometime soon.

Battle Royale. What a movie. This was definitely one of the top five movies I saw last year. I went to see it in the cinema and during the scene at the start where Takeshi Kitano's character sends a knife flying into a girls eye socket then sets off one of the explosive neck bands that all the kids have been fitted with someone got up and walked out never to return. It was a very clever movie and was apparently deemed quite subversive in it's home country. Excellent stuff and a 5/5 movie all the way.
