Whatever they are, System of a Down is awesome, one of my favs.
So if they count, I nominate them. Also Metallica. I actually don't listen to a lot of metal, but those 2 are amazing.
btw, I can't believe someone called Seether metal. I like them, but they're not even close to being metallish.

Another band that isn't really metal is Faith No More. Their one of my favorite bands. but like Soad they fuse so many styles together you can just call it Alternative Rock. Seether is rock in the same form as Nickleback and Puddle Of Mudd, not really nu-metal, amd not really hard rock.

System OF a Down: I rthink they are just amazing and they were my firest favorite rock band.
Slipknot: I know, many people will disagree, but i think they are a very good band and i enjoy them
Stone Sour: I love this band, Corey taylor is da bomb and so is everyone else in this band.
Mudvayne: IM listening to LD-50 right now , this cd kicks all kindas of ass, i really didnt enjoy end of all things to come but it was a good cd nonetheless.
FLAW: One of my all time favortie band that i have ever listen to, they are just great!!! I love the leads singers soft sound with the heavy guitar riffs; its just great. I love this band!
So there are my favorie bands, you dont agree with me,good, but done waste space on this thread saying how bad the bands i like are...THANKS!:)

System OF a Down: horribly untuned guitar slapping with psuedo-intellectual lyrics, and not even metal
Slipknot: faux-satanic music who think that blatantly yelling "fuck" and having blinking 666's as a stage show makes them more offensive.
Stone Sour: overly annoying whining guy complaining about how horrid life treated him
Mudvayne: see slipknot, take away 4 or 5 members, put paint where masks are. bingo, you've got mudvayne.
FLAW: nu-poo-metal

It's not about your favorite bands, it's about your favorite heavy metal bands. I disagree with drunkndeath on the case of System of a Down, I think they're pretty good; but even they, regardless of how good they are, only incorporate some metal in their sound. The others are not metal at all (except that I can't speak about FLAW, I have never heard them).

best metal band, let's see:
Metallica: No heavy metal fans can deny the great power of those metal gods who gaves us three legendary albums known as Kill them all, ride the lightning and master of puppets.
Megadeth: I actually put that band on that list because of one album which is Rust in peace.
Slipknot: When I'M all pissed off an I simply want to get those feelings out, there's nothing better than this great hardcore metal band. Pure anger to the highest level of madness.
Black Sabbath: Say hello to the real godfather of metal music. You just have to listen to Paranoid to get where I'm goin.
Ozzy Osbourne: Let's just admit that I'm a sucker!
Nine inch nails: Well I personnally wouldn't classify this band as pure metal but when you ear songs like mr self destruct, gave-up, big man with a gun or happiness in slavery, you just can't deny their power.

Motorhead tops my list. IMO, they are the best metal band ever. Maybe they are not as popular as Metalica, but they are pretty fuckin consistant. I dont think I have ever heard a bad song from Lemmy (is God) and company.
Other top faves
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Black Sabbath
Kiss (More Rock than HM, but still good)
One band I am really geting into (10 years too late, it would seem!) is Helloween. They are sort of Iron Maiden-lite in their sound, but I really am liking the CD I bought ("The Dark Ride"). Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to find any CD's of theirs where I live.

I surely disagree with drunkdeath for this one. Slipknot is not pure metal, that's true. But we also have to make the difference between what is popular because it's good and what's popular because the tv say so. By example, I consider Linkin Park as a real pop band cause they infest music network which by the way isn't the case of slipknot. They aren't popular because of mtv but because hardcore music is more popular these days that's all!

Well put Pscyho, just because they're mainstream and popular doesn't change the fact that their sound is brutal and unrelenting.

Here we go again with the labels! It's my turn to write a little essay on how I feel! Ok, I'am with thebloodfeaster and drunkndeath on this one, I do not think Slipknot is metal. They are"nu-metal" or whater the fuck that is! However, I do not think that they are a bad band. I have both of their cd's. They are in their own special genere. Also, do not wear a Slipknot hoodie, I proudly wear a Misfts hoodie! And I would NEVER color my hear, and say that I'm a heritc because I go against what my parents say! And what makes me absaolutly SICK is when I see kids at school who say they are true metalheads, and they can't even name one fucking Black Sabbath song! What the hell! And just because they wear a shirt with a "nu-metal" does not make them metal! I also will never wear one of those wrist bands with the studs on them, or wear a stud belt or a pair of fucking Jnco's! I consider them extreamly GAY! "Nu-Metal" is not real metal. It's is it's own special genere, with some good bands, like System of a Down. Please don't get mad at me. No offence to anybody who wears stud belts or those wrist bands. One more thing on Slipknot. If they are going to break up after their 3rd albulm, I think most "Maggots" would aggree with me, it would be for the better. All they do is argue, and Cory Tayler recently got slammed in the press by alot of his fans, and by Dave Brockie for insulting GWAR. I think that after the next albulm, they should stick with side projects. I never cared ofr Stone Sour, but I love the Murderdolls. Sorry about that!

I guess I see what you're saying, they are nu-metal because they have 9 guys, scratching, programming etc. You're probably referring to bands like Death, and In Flames.Sure they're more pure to their art but they've done nothing creative in the past 10 years. And I'm referring to Cannibal Corpse,Motorhead, all those bands like that.Slipknot took what they did and put a new spin on it,so I guess their nu-metal but the fact is they are metal! And also the only ones doing something new with the genre.

1. Death hasn't done anything because Schuldiner, who was pretty much the band, DIED
2. In Flames new album is completely different from anything they've done, they've went from semi-black metal, to melodic death and on to new areas (this is coming from someone who hates In Flames, too)
Slipknot took 9 guys, made 2 useless guys do stupid stuff and wack off with drums, kegs, etc etc. they aren't metal either. Numetal = Unmetal.
as for not doing anything "creative"... that's just silliness. new bands doing new things come out all the time. some Grind, Gore, Brutal Death, etc have new stuff that blows away almost anything slipknot has ever done. as for Slipknot's playing ability.... horrid guitarists, non impressive bassists, and a drummer who people think is cool because he's fast. he's not technical, he's just "fast", even though the guy from Origin could slay him 10 times out of 10.
fact is, slipknot isnt metal, they're just teen gateway mallcore.

They are "nu-metal." I put that in quotes because it's such a misnomer for the genre. It's the fact that the media came up with this term that people confuse it as a sub-genre of metal, when it really is not. Nu-metal took the NON-metal aspects of some borderline metal bands like White Zombie and Fear Factory but left out all of the metal components of those band's music. Then it added more hardcore breaks and 'core song structure. Slipknot does drop a few death metal riffs into the mix; but a death metal riff every few songs amidst of sea of non-metal material does not make them a metal band. I will agree that Slipknot is one of the more extreme bands in the genre, but being loud, heavy, and fast does not automatically mean a band is metal.
I'm not saying you should not like Slipknot, everybody should enjoy what they enjoy; but calling them metal is like calling Monet a cubist.

Exactly, and it needs a different name to end the confusion. Some people call it "mallcore" but I don't really like to do that (although I admit I have been guilty of it) because that name was created as an insult. It just needs an honest name that does not confuse people into thinking it is metal.

I care, because the misunderstanding of metal has gotten ridiculously out of hand. It's not the fault of the fans, it's the fault of MTV and moron publications like Metal Edge. I care because I'm tired of telling people that I like metal and then they excitedly ask me if I like a whole slew of non-metal bands "Oh so you were a Korn-kid in highschool then?" I also care because classifications are there for a reason. Language itself is nothing but a complex set of labels and people need to use these labels to communicate and be understood. Metal is an important part of my life and I don't see why it is "shit" to argue against the label of "metal" being thrown onto any and every band that uses loud guitars and rough vocals.
So no, I will not stop. Ever.

To be honest, I can understand that because way before listening to Korn, slipknot or system of a down, I was a sabbath fan. While everybody at school kept on sayin that the last show of limp bizkit kicked ass I was there in front of a stage yelling my guts out so the great Ozzy Osbourne would notice that I exist somehow. I was there at the Sabbath reunion tour but no one around gave a shit cause at the time every little teen prick were sayin that the best band on earth was either Korn or Bizkit. So I got pissed off at those people but not for the same reasons. It was for their ingnorance and their lack of interest for something that's not known under the name of a brand new popular band.
So I guess I can understand that but I still think It's useless to fight over classification. It's sometime too personal and a lot of times really confusing. I'm not surprise when I'm talkin heavy metal with someone to ear the name slipknot pop out of the conversation. Not because I think this is pure metal, but because It's not so far from the definition. I just wouldn't classify this as being an heavy metal band but that's me. On the other hand I would't stand somebody speaking about Bon Jovi in this kind of conversation cause there's a big fucking difference between this and heavy metal.

Type O Negative,
NIN,
Rammstein,
Marilyn,
Ok, it's all goth.. I know, I know!
And lets not forget the God's that are Iron Maiden

Black Sabbath are the kings. The sound dint exist really before them. And its interesting to note that true metal has a bluesy quality to it. I actually see more that's identifiable w/ metal in Delta Blues than in bands like Korn or Limp Bizcuit.
