Like the question says...who is Tom Marvolo Riddle?

The actor who's playing that character(Christian Coulson) has been seen in another work briefly and after some searching around...I was delighted to hear that he is in Chamber of Secrets.

I am looking forward to seeing CoS and especially this actor in it. :D
I have not read the books so can some of you guys who are familiar with the material help me out?

I will tell you, but it'll contain some spoilers.

Tom Marvolo Riddle is a boy who went to Hogwarts in the 50's. He caught Hagrid raising a monster in the castle and got him expelled. He lets Harry see this via a diary that sucks Harry into the past, or Riddle's memory in a wonderful sepia sequence. I am sorry if this sounds weird. The writer Steve Kloves gets it across better. See the film. :)

It actually spells I AM LORD VOLDEMORT though this is clearly shown in the film. Basically Voldemort is the seriously bad wizard in the Harry Potter universe who was defeated while trying to curse Harry as a baby after he had killed his parents - and nobody can figure out why this happened.

This is why Harry is famous in the wizarding world as he ended Voldemorts reign of terror. As Voldemort was a person he obviously went to Hogwarts school as a kid under the name Tom Marvolo Riddle and left his 16 year old self behind in the diary so that one day he could instruct the heir of Slytherin on how to open the Chamber of Secrets. It is this diary that Harry finds in the film.
