I didn't use to be a huge manga fan at all, I actually kind of disliked it with prejudice, until a friend lend me some DRAGON BALL, DRAGON BALL Z, SAINT SEYIA and AKIRA issues to read. I read 'em, and I had to admit: this stuff is good! :D I really am starting to dig it. The visual style is highly likeable, the stories and plots entertaining...good shite.

Over the last couple of weeks i've picked up quite a few Manga collections and so far i've been very impressed.

I read the three volumes of Uzumaki over the course of two nights and that resulted in my knocking half a mark off of my 4/5 review of the live action movie adaptation. The movie is great but sweet fuck is the manga good. I'd say that between a third to a quarter of the stuff in the books made it into the movie. This manga was an unpleasant treat. The imagination Junji Ito has at his disposal both in terms of plot and art is jaw dropping. This is epic stuff and very disturbing throughout (moreso the further through it you get). I really have to crown him the Clive Barker of horror manga. A lot of the stuff in Uzumaki reminded me of the sort of disturbing body horror that Barker often brings to the horror/fantasy genre. If you are a horror fan...READ UZUMAKI. If you are a manga fan READ UZUMAKI. If you are breathing...READ UZUMAKI. A first class masterpiece. I'm eager to read his Tomie series and his new comic Gyo. If it's even half as good as Uzumaki it'll be worthwhile.

I also picked up the first volume of Blade Of The Immortal. Wow!!! This is such a cool comic. A samurai warrior is rendered immortal by an old priestess and by way of penence for being responsible for the death of his sister he is cursed with the task of hunting down and killing 1000 evil men. The artwork is beautiful in this comic and the story thus far drew me in and kept me captivated for the duration of the first volume. I've read that it gets a lot better as it progresses.

The other title I checked out was the Battle Royale manga. I've only read the first volume but in terms of depth of characterisation and sheer, jawdropping brutality it scores highly. I think that i'm going to enjoy this more than the movie and I fucking loved the movie to bits. The artwork is tremendous and the plight of the kids had more emotional impact that it did in the movie as a result of them being more fleshed out. There are going to be ten volumes of this by the end of the year and each clocks in at over 200 pages. At £5.99 each that is one hell of a bargain.

After I finish reading all the volumes of Blade Of The Immortal and Battle Royale i'm planning on checking out Lone Wolf And Cub. It's going to take a major time and money investment to read it from start to finish though as there are 30+ collected editions out so far from Dark Horse Comics. They are fairly inexpensive each but it adds up when you realise how many there are. Should be good though. It's one of the most acclaimed mangas ever.

I like a lot of stuff that is actually meant more for girls like Marmalade Boy and Tokyo Mew Mew. I just don't like anything with Mech (haven't read the Fooly Cooly manga yet though. The Anime was awesome though.)

I adore "Hellsing". I love the art work for all of the characters, especially Alucard, Walter and Paladin Andersong.

I've read the entire series of Chobits which I borrowed from my friend (it was rather pervy even though it's aimed squarely at tweenagers) and the first volumes of Petshop of Horrors and Battle Royale.

I really should read more manga.
