THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS (1991) Directed by Wes Craven. Outrageous, audacious, ambitious horror film concerning a young black boy from the ghetto named "Fool" (Brandon Adams), who helps his sister's boyfriend (Ving Rhames in an early but effective role) rob their wealthy landlords (Everett McGill and Wendy Robie of "Twin Peaks" fame), only to discover that they are raving lunatics who have imprisoned the title characters (looking like TEXAS CHAINSAW refugees) in the basement of their creepy mansion. This movie features everything including the kitchen sink: a killer Rott Weiler named "Prince"; McGill (clad in an S&M costume that you've gotta see to believe!) hunting his prey with a shotgun in the confines of the house's secret passageways; a tasteless, offensive cannibal feast; numerous chase sequences and hilarious one-liners; and a knockout supporting cast that includes A.J. Langer as the couple's innocent "adopted" daughter, Kelly Jo Minter as Adams' older sister, Bill Cobbs as their wise grandfather and Sean Whalen as "Roach", one of the doomed creatures dwelling in the tortuous abode. The ending is whimsical rather than realistic, and Adams and Langer make a cute interracial couple. Robie plays her role to perfection while McGill goes so over-the-top, he must have needed a Valium to come down at the end of the shooting. My grade for these "People": B-

Wes Craven truly is a legend. I loved this film. It has you laughing from beginning to end (and not like Bloody Murder or Manos: Hands Of Fate would).
This is truly a great horror film and I urge anyone to see it.
Wendy Robie's acting is excellent.

I loved this movie. The first time I saw it was when I was a lil kid and I thought (even then) that it was a really original idea that was different from the other horror movies back then. Also,I really cared for Fool and that lil girl, they both had great performances.

Pretty good movie. Not very scary, but lots of fun with some good gore. Any movie that has trap doors and a maze gets my vote. Good acting.

What really sealed the deal for this movie was the casting of Ed and Nadine from Twin Peaks as the couple who enjoy leather far too much.
PUTS had a lot going for it, and explores childhood themes well.
Roach! Why'd you have to die?

I've always enjoyed "The People Under the Stairs". It's quirky and fun but is still creepy somehow.
I'm not always a Wes Craven fan, but I really think this movie hit the mark. Too much fun.

This is Wes Craven's best horror film in my opinion, I like it better than A Nightmare on Elm Street.

THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS rules! While it's not the best, I still enjoyed it. I only rented it because the cover and the title were intriguing and I thought it would be kinda scary. It was more of a comedy/horror and Everett McGill & Wendy Robie as Man & Woman were so wacko. But, they played their parts to a tee. Overall it's a really entertaining and fun horror flick that does offer a couple scares while mostly being a comedy/horror...

I agree with most of the other opinions, I thought this movie rocked! I saw it when I was about 13 and was expecting to be very scared but it turned out to be a great original story that had me rooting for the characters. The concept of it was freaky but it was good twisted fun! I also hate to admit it but I had a little crush on one of the guys under the stairs......HEY I was 13!!!

Watch the far better Real Killer from Mike " The Convent " Mendez.
It was his first film I think.
It is really disturbing and stylish, too.
Certainly not your regular bang - bang flick !!
Things seem to be very different and weird in this film !!!
very very good !!! The brothers James ( who are the killers ) have to fight against a middle - class family !!!!
