You know that as a horror fan you can sometimes become jaded, you think that youve seen everything...been there done that.
Then suddenly you see something thats just a jolt of energy. Something that gives you hope that there are new and original ideas to be made. Films like Day of the Beast give me hope that ideas are not worn out. You can come up with something completely original!

Now youll probably find this in the foreign section of your video shop, since its a movie made in Spain...but believe itll be worth it to have to read these subtitles..

This film was so original and well acted that I was litterally glued to the screen for its whole entirety.

The films about this priest that finds out when the anti-christ is gonna be born...and he decides to stop it from happening.
Only thing is he think that the only way to do this is to trick the devil into thinking that he is a sinner. He wants to sell his soul to the devil....heh..heh..so he can meet him and kill the antichrist!

Its not only fresh and original, but incredibly funny! Your gonna laugh at the crazy shit that this priest says. And not to mention his crazy heavy metal loving sidekick.

I dont know if anyone of you has seen this but..what did you guys think about it?

I caught that one. Saw it at the video store about a year ago and rented it out of curiosity. From what I remember, it's certainly... different. Cool premise and kick-ass part in the middle that takes place in an apartment, but I found it hard to keep track of what was going on at the end.

*shrug* Mebbe it's me.

Well, lets me see. The priest was trying to find the exact place where the anti-christ was gonna be born cause he knew When it was gonna happen but he didnt know where...and when he got there all hell broke loose!

yeah that scene in the apt. was really good! Im thinking of buying this...:D

The sinning priest..heh.heh..that was funny how he kept on doing evil things so he could trick the devil into thinking that he was one of em...I was laughing out loud when the priest started to key all the cars...like that IS one of the most evil things anyone could do...heh.heh...I mean you just dont fuck with another mans vehicle..:D

Oh and another thing is that Santiago Segura (the heavy metal loving sidekick of the priest in the day of the beast) is gonna be on Beyond Re-animator so that should be cool. Cause I thought he was GREAT on Day of the Beast....he was soo funny.

You know he got that heavymetal airhead type down flat!:D

Let me know what you think after you check it out, I for one was blown away by its originality. But dont expect a lot of fx (though it does have some and the are good) or big action sequences, just expect a good story and excelent performances...

It just shows you things that are so OUTTHERE and crazy and at the same time funny that you cant help but be amazed at how creative the story is. And just seeing that priest doing all those crazy things, you gotta wonder how the religious people in spain must have reacted to this one. Cause it certainly is controversial, I mean come on having a priest sell his soul to Satan? You gotta admit you gotta have balls to film something like that...

The opening sequence alone is one of those things that make say "HOly SHIT!" out loud.

Man I was blown away by this movie.I went into in thinking it was going to be pretty bad but after it was over Its probably one of the best low budget movies I've seen.Padre and Jose were cracking me up all they way through the movie. The opening scene was pretty cool and I wasnt at all exspecting it to happen when Padre was in the church. The scene where they were in the apartment waiting for it to happen was sweet. His sidekick Jose was funny as hell.-Deep-

Yeah I also enjoyed the scenes on that light sing, and the scene in the apartment where "satan" shows up....really good stuff.

And like you say it is a low budget flick, but you cant hardly tell cause the movie looks great.:D

I also like how through out the movie Padre kept trying to do bad things to get him that much closer to Satan. This is a flick I would highly recomend. Its worth a rent just for the laughs

Monkeyman - Thanks for reminding me about this awesome film. I especially liked the dude with the goat head; he was gnarly. And you're right, the film does seem very fresh and original. Do you know if it's available on DVD, 'cause I'm about due to watch this puppy again.

Tarman- Glad you enjoyed it, hope other schmoes do the same thing and search out this fine flick. Hey Tarman did that opening sequence catch you off guard? I really liked how it started!

Hal- dont know if its out on dvd, I doubt it, the only copy I could find was a vhs at blockbuster.

But anyhows here are some of the evil "funny" things that the priest does to get close to satan himself:

spoiler alert!

1-Someones dying on the sidewalk from a car accident and a stranger asks the padre to bless the guys soul before he dies...so the priest gets close to the guy...leans into the dying mans ear and says: "I hope you burn in hell motherfucker" or something to that effect. Not only that...then he steals the guys wallet from his jacket.

2-As hes walking by some cars in a parking lot...he takes out his keys and...scratches them.

3-He goes into this heavy metal music shop and starts looking for satanic music. Funny thing is he goes by some Metallica albums and some but doesnt think they are any evil, then he asks for some ac/dc cause hes heard that they are really evil...LOL! And then he asks the shop owner to play it backwards, to see if it contains any "satanic messages" Ha!

He does many more funny things but I guess youll have to check out the movie to see it for yourselfs! :D

Yeah that scene was preatty funny, the Grandpa was a loony walking around naked all through the house...all the time! Ha!

Anyhows, dude heres the poster for this movie. I was looking for the one I found at my blockbuster wich was a bit cooler cause it shows the priest hand holding a crucifix, but the hand looks evil with long fingernails and hairy. But unfortunately I didnt find it.. This ones preatty cool though. Check it out.

I really want to see this. The guy who made this also directed a movie starring Rosie Perez and Javier Bardem called Perdita Durango aka Dance with the Devil. You guys should check it out. It's got kidnapping, sex, gunplay, drug-running and crazy voodoo scenes featuring Screaming Jay Hawkins. Not a brilliant film but pretty enjoyable. Oh, James Gandolfini is in it too as a seemingly indestructible law man.

Alex del Iglesias rules in epic proportions. PERDITA DURANGO is a classic to me. Javier Bardem was the money in that movie and even though Rosie Perez might not be everyone's case, she definitely kicked ass in there. Drugs, Voodoo, Sex and Violence what more can you ask for? The only possible low-point is the obnoxious rape-scene. 9/10

DAY OF THE BEAST is pretty much on the must-see side of things too, loved that Deathmetal guy (ironically named Santamaria) and the fact that he keeps his grandfather on a constant LSD-trip 'cause he loves him so much. Not Perdita Durango but hell yeah, check it out 8/10.

Just saw AKTION MUTANTE a few nights ago. Iglesias' debut is pretty damm silly but features some fun moments. Wouldn't let this be the entrance to the guy's movies though. Overall 7/10

Barmy trivia # 436 - Alex de la Iglesia made Perdita Durango after turning down Alien: Resurrection - good choice!

Personally, I'm not as keen on Perdita Durango as his others, while the TV-wish-fulfilment is hilarious I found the rape/sexual assaults a bit heavy handed and they didn't quite gel.

The best bet for Day of the Beast is the Spanish DVD SE - uncut, widescreen and 5.1 with english subtitles. If you're conversent in the language, de la Iglesia provides a Spanish commentary too!

I'm looking forward to his latest pair of films, comic thriller La Comunidad and western(ish) 800 Balas (800 Bullets)

PS - fans of de la Iglesia may like Tuno Negro - a Scream-a-like slasher with some good visual inventiveness and some very amusing nods to de la Iglesia and other Spanish horror! Not an all-time classic, but good fun!

Yeah maybe the sex stuff was played a little too heavy given the tone of the rest of the film but it's still damn good.

Can't wait to see some of his other works.

Thanx for those suggestions The Jaff and Troll Man, Id heard about Accion Mutante but havent been able to get a hold of it.

If his other films are as good as Day of the Beast I should be in for a tasty treat!

You know what sucks? A day after I first saw this post I was looking around on the digital cable menu and saw that Day of the Beast was on the HBO Spanish channel. Much to my dismay I realized that this is a special channel you have to order seperately! Oh well. Maybe this is a sign that HBO might show it on one of the other zillion channels they have. I'll keep my eye out for it.
