Pretty good numbers(I am glad Potter keeps on chugging :)). I am most excited for Wednesday's numbers. I, as of now, am predicting this order: 1. Harry Potter 2. Treasure Planet 3. Die Another Day. And of the other new releases 8 Crazy Nights should come in second. As for Solaris, I think it will do low-to-weak business on Wednesday and Thursday. I believe it is aimed more for older, mature adults and that demographic usually see the Saturday or Sunday matinee shows, espcecially the senior citizens.

I am too, but I'm just hoping we actually get to see them on Thursday. Last year they didn't get released until Friday. I kept checking on and off all day last year on Thursday (Thanksgiving) and the numbers weren't out. So I had to wait until Friday which really sucked because I have this weird obsession with the Box Office...

I love it! That is so perfect and clever. That will now be the official name for our condition. You know, Hollywoodnumberoitis would be a really cool user name.
Anyway, I've been infected since I was a kid, ever since I started to receive Entertainment Weekly. My condition has only gotten worse since then and I need my Entertainment Weekly like an alcoholic needs alcohol. Hi, my name is Mike, and I'm an Entertainment Weekly aholic ;)...
You know, sometimes I stop and think "Why am I so obsessed with the Box Office?" It seems kind of ridiculous... Yet I don't know why I am, I just am. THE BOX OFFICE KICKS ASS!!!

I cannot wait for tommorow's numbers even MORE now. I just saw Solaris and it was amazing. I pray it does well! I am hoping for 8 million for today.
I think SOLARIS might make 1.90-2.00 Million for Wednesday... Not to crush your hopes dh but I just don't see this movie doing too well. Even if it opened big it would most likely still see big drops. It just isn't going to go over well with mainstream audiences, I think it will be a love it or hate it movie. It should do alright on video though.
A lot of the reviews I've read have said it brings up many questions but doesn't answer them which only brings the movie down.
I'll still rent it anyway when it comes out but I hate the fact that it doesn't answer any of the questions it brings up, so I can only imagine how pissed off a lot of audiences will be.

Yes 8 Million was over the top. I really loved the film and found it fascinating(a great one to talk about), but it probably will make 3 million tops for today. :( Hopefully, it'll do good over the weekend for an adult choice.

At my theatre, Treasure Planet was sold out all day. The lines were huge. TONS of kids and their parents. It almost made me late for Solaris. I think it will open with 12 million for today, seriously.

Wednesday will most likely be Bond's last day on the top of the charts. Harry Potter will soon reign king again! Why? you ask. Some schools actually had school Wednesday (mine didn't) so kids were still at school and couldn't go see Harry Potter. On the other hand, Die Another Day attracts an older audience who doesn't have school and was able to go to the movies... This puts a smile on my face.
Treasure Planet did OK, not great. It should see a big increase today/tomorrow.
Solaris bombed. I don't think anyone doubted it would....

Yeah, schools all around here had school on Wednesday. They always have school the day before Thanksgiving around here. Anyway, it's obvious HARRY POTTER will be #1 for the weekend. SOLARIS bombed, I just knew it would.
Here's my predictions for SOLARIS at www.leesmovieinfo.com for the weekend:
Friday - 3.4 Million
Saturday - 4.6 Million
Sunday - 2.4 Million
Total - 10.4 Million
I'm so glad I changed my predictions. These were my original predictions:
Friday - 4.4 Million
Saturday - 5.6 Million
Sunday - 3.4 Million
Total - 13.4 Million
Anyway, THEY actually did decent and has a nice average. It looks like it will have a 6-7 Million opening weekend which is very nice considering it is only playing in 1,475 theaters and will be in 1,615 theaters on Friday. I'm sure it should expand the following weekend too. Right now it's on the right track to be a sleeper hit.

I was expecting more from Treasure Planet. All of the shows at my theatre were sold out, but it looks bad, so I don't care if it bombs.
Harry Potter will come out at #1 for the whole 5 day span.
Die Another Day....Ugh.
Solaris......I am mad. It derserved more, but it won't be a mainstream film, which stinks.
They......Not suprising. Bad title, not enough theatres.
8 Crazy Nights.....It says something bad about America when this is bigger than a smart film like Solaris.
The numbers suck. All I want to say is: GO POTTER AND SOLARIS! THE BEST AND SECOND BEST FILMS OF THE YEAR!. Potter will be #1.....great! :) And I pray Solaris picks up steam with adults over the weekend.

Mine were.....
Friday: 7.1
Saturday: 8.3
Sunday: 6.5
Total: 21.90
I won't snag a DVD this weekend, if ever.
I have a chance at winning for SOLARIS, but I'm not getting my hopes up like I did last weekend...
Oh well, I'm pretty happy with the numbers, especially with THEY, which did pretty decent.

hahah! i didnt even realize that it wasnt there, i agree this did look shitty, what a BOMB! i m also surprised that DAD was the king on Wed, am i alone on that? i dont think treasure planet will do great business this weekend, and that the big newcomer will be 8 Crazy Nights, simply because it has Adam Sandler in the title. They could also become a sleeper hit, i am actually startin to get excited to see it saturday, and i think it will do upwards of 7 million this weekend.

I guess this will be The Ring's last weekend in the top ten, but this means the DVD will be coming soon! And I did not even notice that Extreme OPS was not in there, I do not feel sorry for it, the film looks weak.
I noticed EXTREME OPS wasn't in the top 10, I just didn't care ;)...
Anyway, I don't see it being the last weekend in the top 10 for THE RING. It keeps holding well and next weekend only has one new major release (Analyze That) since Equilibrium and Empire will only be opening in around 800 theaters... I think it should stay in the top 10 for AT LEAST one more weekend after this weekend...

I was wrong about them too which I must say surprises me because family movies usually do the best on Thanksgiving. But I'm sure Harry Potter will probably be #1 for the weekend. 8 Crazy Nights and Treasure Planet both saw decreases, which is also a little surprising, mainly Treasure Planet. I'm glad "They" saw an increase, it's doing pretty decent. Maybe we'll get a "They 2" if it keeps doing decent, I'm sure I'll want one if it's as good as I've heard it is and as good as it looks.

Think wrong Mr. Mike. Bond's got it through the weekend. Oh Harry will make #2 for sure, its got too, if not, then what will 8 crazy nights. Bond holds 1, potter either 2 or 3, probably 3, to think about it, well, maybe 8 crazys, cause there is 3 (8) movies out: 8 crazy nights, 8 mile, 8 Women.
8 CRAZY NIGHTS looks to make 13-14 Million for the weekend, possibly 15 Million at the most. I predicted 10.4 Million for SOLARIS and I highly doubt it will make any more than that. TREASURE PLANET might make 15-20 Million. THEY should make 6-7 Million. DIE ANOTHER DAY and HARRY POTTER both look to make 30+ MILLION. THE RING should make 5-6 Million. THE SANTA CLAUSE 2 looks to make about 10 Million. FRIDAY AFTER NEXT might make about 7 Million.

But which will make more profit in the long run? James Bond which reportedly has a budget of 142 million dollars and a 38 million dollar marketing campaign which opened to 47 million, or Harry Potter, which had a budget of 100-130 million and a marketing campaign worth 45 million dollars and opened to 88 million in it's first weekend? Do the math, when it's all said in done, Bond fans will be "moaning like all hell broke loose..."

And when you look at the biggest worldwide grossers of all-time, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's(or Philospher's) Stone is number two with $967.2 million. I think that shows some interest in Potter worldwide, don't you?
The first Bond film to be found on the list, The World Is Not Enough, is at #69 with $354.8 million.
So Harry Potter fans, keep your mouth closed because there is no need to moan, and all hell has NOT broken loose.

But TI, man that's a shame. I heard it was a decent movie and now it's playing third fiddle.

I am not surprised that Solaris bombed because it is not a mainstream movie like films such as Femme Fatale and Mulholland Dr. Eight Crazy Nights has done better than I expected it to do and They has done quite well for what it is; having no stars and all. I found Die Another Day too long and I rather disliked it.

Solaris is the kind of film that is doomed to do badly in the States. But, with these kind of movies, it's very common that they do a lot better overseas. I think the people behind the film know this also, and weren't really even hoping for a 30 million opening. This probably won't do as well as A.I did internationally, but I definitely see it making big bucks worldwide.

I wouldn't call people who didn't like Solaris "JoeSixPack who go to the movies not to think." I consider myself pretty smart, and I enjoy movies where the audience has to be active thinkers, but Solaris was just plain terrible. There was no point to the movie, there were no answers in the movie, and it was extremely boring. Thank god it was only 1.5 hours or I would have left. I'd say it was definitely the worst movie I've seen this year, and I would give it a solid F.
This was the first time I've gone to see a movie based solely on Joblo's 8/10 review, and I was extremely disappointed. I wish I had seen Bond again.

I hope Solaris does pick up a lot of cash overseas. It was a brilliant film about love, loss, and rememberance. It is a film you have to think in and provides more than guns, car chases, and beautiful woman. It is a masterpiece, and the second best film of the year. Solid 9/10, or maybe even a 10/10.

Chamber Of Secrets dropped only 23% in its third weekend, unlike the 59% drop the first Harry Potter film suffered in its third weekend.
Horror Whore, why are the estimates confusing?
By the way, just in case anyone cares, The Emperor's Club held up very nicely grossing 3.669 Million for a drop of around only 4%.

I am very pleased that Potter reclaimed the crown this weekend. I hope it does just as well next weekend and continues to do well. The best film of the year at the top of the box office. Wonderful. The Ring and 8 Mile both did well. Poor Solaris.....

Well since Solaris Bombed, Clooney and Soderbergh promised an Oceans 12, if solaris bombed. So Wait, we got dangerous still. Otherwise we are almost at O12
They were supposed to make a SOLARIS 2 but now I highly doubt we'll ever see one...

I was, but I guess I shouldn't have since it has little going for it....

Not me, I think it actually did pretty well. It did better than Solaris considering it was playing on 791 less screens.

It was 17 Million... And with 8 Million in the bank so far it looks to make it back easily. THEY will gross AT LEAST 20 Million at the Box Office before doing some very good business on video.

Wait... so who came out on top, Bond or Potter? Bond for 5-day, Potter for 3-day. This is so confusing...
And Solaris is a bloody fantastic film, so it's very sad it's doing poorly.
Bond came out on top for Wednesday-Sunday and Potter came out on top for Friday-Sunday...
Weekend Box Office (November 29 - December 1, 2002)
By Sujit Chawla
THIS WEEKEND After a one week absence Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets returned to the top of the charts over the three-day holiday weekend. However if you prefer the five-day totals then Die Another Day managed to take the title this weekend. Holdovers in the top ten remained fairly strong while the five new releases managed to go from bad to worse with their opening tallies.
Harry, Ron and Hermione conjured up another $32.1M according to estimates this weekend, a small 24% drop from last weekend. After only seventeen days, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets has banked $200.2M into Gringotts. By comparison, last year's Sorcerer's Stone after its third weekend had taken in $219.6M with the Thanksgiving weekend falling in the middle of that run. With better reviews, Chamber of Secrets has a decent shot at reaching its predecessors total cume of $317.5M. Over the five days Chamber of Secrets took in an estimated $45.8M.
Landing in second place this weekend was everybody's favorite spy James Bond in Die Another Day. There was no sophomore Jinx as Pierce Brosnan and company took in an estimated $31M over the three-day weekend, a reasonable 34% drop from last weekend's opening. The last Bond to hit the theaters, 1999s The World is Not Enough had $75M after its second weekend while this Bond is expected to cross the $100M mark on Sunday. Over the five days Die Another Day took in an estimated $46.3M.
Staying strong in third position this week was the Tim Allen starrer The Santa Clause 2. Up 20% from last weekend's three-day total, the Disney release brought in an estimated $12.3M for the three-day weekend and $17.2M over the five-day session. Its total cume now stands at $113.9M. With its continually strong holds and the Christmas holidays still to come, Clause 2 has a great shot at passing the original's $144.8M take from back in 1994, very impressive for a film that went 8 years between original and sequel.
Opening in fourth place was another Disney release, Treasure Planet with an estimated $11.9M over the three-day weekend. With a less-than-stellar three-day average of $3,687, Treasure Planet was obviously not the top choice for kids and their parents this weekend as families appear to have decided to stick with old favorites over the new releases. Reviews were generally favorable and those who saw the movie enjoyed it as it got an A- from CinemaScore.com. Planet's cume since its Wednesday opening stands at $16.5M. Disney's last animated film was this summer's Lilo & Stitch which opened in June with $35M on its way to a total of $145.7M.
Landing in fifth place was another new entry onto the charts, Adam Sandler's 8 Crazy Nights which laughed its way to an estimated $10.1M over the three-day weekend and $15M since its opening on Wednesday. Its per screen average was a so-so $4,035. Its critical reception was lukewarm, but viewers overall gave the movie a B grade on CinemaScore.com with those under 21 giving it an A-. Columbia also reported a strong showing for the sneak preview of the new Jennifer Lopez starrer Maid in Manhattan and will have another sneak preview this upcoming weekend before the national release on December 13th.
Falling 40% from last weekend and ending up in sixth place this weekend was the Ice Cube film Friday After Next with an estimated $7.8M over the three days. Its cume now stands at $25.6M. Totals for the previous films in the series include $27.4M for Friday and $57.2M for Next Friday. Friday After Next looks to end somewhere in the middle.
Crashing into seventh place was the George Clooney/Steven Soderbergh collaboration Solaris which picked up an estimated $6.8M this weekend for a poor per screen average of $2,818. Critics reviews were mixed with most saying Clooney's performance was the highlight of the film, but moviegoers universally panned the film as CinemaScore.com reports that viewers across the board gave the movie an F. Apparently film fans were hoping for something different than what the mega-star and Oscar winning director had to offer.
Holdovers took the eight and ten spots this weekend as 8 Mile and The Ring had three-day totals of $5.9M and $5.5M, and five-day totals of $8.5M and $7.8M respectively, according to estimates. Their cumes now stand at $107.5M and $120M. Sandwiched into the middle was the horror/thriller They which took in an estimated $5.7M for a per screen average of $3529. Its total since opening on Wednesday is $8M. And landing well outside the top ten was the last new release this weekend, Extreme Ops was took in an estimated $3M over the five-day weekend.
Compared to projections, Treasure Planet came in well below Gitesh's estimate of $28M while 8 Crazy Nights came in slightly below his $14M prediction. Solaris came in just under Gitesh's $10M, while They came in right on target. And Extreme Ops fell off the radar completely as its five-day totals came in under Gitesh's three-day prediction.
The top 10 cume was $129M for the three-day period, off a small 9% from last weekend.

LAST YEAR For the third straight weekend, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone topped the box office grossing $23.6M. Opening in second place was the military actioner Behind Enemy Lines with $18.7M on its way to $58.9M. Spy Game followed in third with $11M in its sophomore frame, Monsters, Inc. with $9.1M in its fifth lap, and Black Knight with $5.5M in its second weekend.

To me, this is great news for the top two films. "Chamber of Secrets" deserves to be on top with its star-power. I'm also happy to see "Die Another Day" only dropped 34 percent. Man that's low. TWINE grossed $126 mil in 1999; DAD's budget is $124 mil or so. By the end of next weekend DAD will be the highest grossing Bond film in its franchise history (in the US anyway).

I could be sure we settled this like grown adults. :( I give up, whatever. Fine I'll end this whole squabble by saying Saving Private Ryan is one of my favorite films of all time. There, is that better so we can end this bitterness?
Like I said, I'm happy for both films either way.

I continue to be impressed with Harry Potter. Wow! I'm also glad that The Emperor's Club is holding out nicely. It's a shame about Treasure Planet with is GREAT, and Solaris which is very good. Other movies are holding out nicely. Good for bond, though I didn't like the film itself, I like the franchise and this now means they will continue to make thse films. I'm also happy about THEY because this means it will stay around for a while, and I'll get to see it in theatres.
I think dh1989's comment about DAD WAS a very mature, adult comment. Saying that your happy about a film you hated doing well at the boxoffice is very gracious.
P.S. If you're counting inflation, I find it hard to believe that DAD will top Thunderball's 800+ million gross.

He wasn't counting inflation. With it, Thunderball grossed as much as The Phantom Menace.

Very good weekend, in all. I am glad Chamber of Secrets held up so well, and I hope it continues to do so. As for the new releases, nothing really special. It seems people wanted to stick with Quidditch and Ice Palaces mostly this weekend. I am sad for Solaris. It was brilliant and deserved more, much more. I do think it will do amazing business overseas, though.
